    This is Karen at her very, very best : the 1st time I saw her in Denver, early summer of '71, & I was just blown away by what I saw & heard. In person, her voice was stronger, smoother, & more expressive, just leaving me speechless. The group was excellent, & though it's clear that Rich is the boss, it's his kid sister who WAS the show. To be fair, Richard was the boss because he really did know and understand what worked for them musically, as well as offering something innovative to the process that set them apart from other acts, and gave them their own stamp. The first thing you notice in this clip, is Richard and his precision with the intro as he plays, sounds exactly like the record, note for note. The band and Karen are following him as he plays keyboard, and conducts like an orchestra leader at the same time. So young both of them, but very disciplined and very professional.

      +Alvin4NY what blows me away seeing them live like this is how close to the record the whole band sounds. The hardest thing IMO to coordinate live is an evenly mixed and most importantly, on pitch, or in key, set of vocal harmonies. Their whole band vocal sound live is soooo amazingly good it's nearly unbelievable, but I know it's their real live voices cause Richard was a big perfectionist. The part at the end where they sing "think I'm gonna be sad" has 2 vocal harmony parts that are so close they are only one "tone" apart, similar to singing a B and C together, which is extremely difficult to do, especially live. Also their mixed volume when doing these harmonies is just as amazing. It is so even, Karen's voice just melts into the other lower harmonies so no voice dominates in what you hear. When they sing "he's got a ticket to ride", I think she sings the highest part....

    I wonder how many people realize how cosmic The Carpenters really were as a duo. Forget their talent as instrumentalists for a minute and just listen to those voices. After many years I finally heard this song again...and listening to their beautiful harmony brought me to tears. Every artist Knows, that "Art is all about doing something that no one else has done" Karen was doing just that, one of the first female singers that could play the drums and play them well..Why stop progress? I love all the videos with Karen on the drums, best.

      I'm so glad to read someone else saying the exact same thing in the same way I've thought for a long time. I think Karen sang her best while accompanying the drums because as she herself said "they (singing and drumming) both came together". I think the audiences preferred to see her in her element too - the applause is much more intense for the pieces with her drumming/singing.

    • @cmissshelleymichelle
      @cmissshelleymichelle 4 года назад +3

      I remember reading that Rich said that Karen was small and that when she was behind a large drum set nobody could see her so they came to the agreement that when it came time for the ballads she would go out front and sing the songs standing w/ a microphone and she could remain seated behind the drums yet we could see Ringo Starr drummer for The Beatles perfectly fine on that raised platform that he was on so I don't see why they couldn't have done the same for Karen. Sighhhh. What could of been. RIP Karen. RIP baby.

Karen, as shy and insecure as she was, had to ask her companion, "do you this he was serious?". Face it. I have met thousands of hard core Rock N Rollers, And when I mention Karen Carpenter, they tell me they have all of her albums, loved her voice and while growing up were, "secretly, seriously in love with her, and her expressionist voice". Bitter Sweet.
