Who cares what Lennon thought about her. Anyone who understands musical talent could see that she was brilliant from the very beginning.. Lennon certainly made his contributions to the pantheon but the Carpenters went their own way and were superior to him. They never needed the approval of Lennon or anyon else.

When I want to be inspired by how well one person can do two things at one time, I watch Karen Carpenter singing and drumming. I hadn't seen this one before, I think. In any case, thanks New Sun...if I understand you correctly. Anyway, this version really hits the mark for me. The perfect Carpenters song to me is "Dancing in the Streets." I really like their covers of Beatles songs, but they were all just a bit too OTT for me to love them. This one it seemed they toned down their tendency to jazzify a tad and it's just beautiful. I had my doubts about the falsetto chorus at first, but came around to realizing it makes Karen's contralto sound even richer. I was sad to hear it end.
