    Also its called code switching for the thing where you talk or act in one situation versus another. The difference is usually the instrinsic culture or expectations in the situation one finds themselves in.

    Duncan... What you were trying to describe when changing how to talk while on the court vs how you talk off the court is called "code switching". The black community does this often when we go to work at a predominantly white workplace. Changing your normal vernacular to adjust to the dominant culture you're working in...

    code-switching is wicked natural on a basketball court. I definitely start speaking more "ebonically" once I'm about 2 minutes into the game. More abbreviations. It is because you mirror that which you observe. If you play with people like that, you start to act that way. exact same as picking up accents.

    1:33 this play brings Me pain. I called the season before this the heat vs celtics ecf and miami making it to the finals, didn't bet on it like a dummy and lost millions, but this game I put up $10 3 game parlay and I missed $20,000 by 1 Marcus smart 3. Also covid corrutption and policitcs shut down the games a month before I was gonna go to a Boston vs heat game 😒😒😒

    The thing about talking different normally and during basketball is more common than you think. It's pretty much code-switching. Think about the way you speak to your friends and your coworkers in the office. Or even when you go to a different state. My cousin who's from the South does this. He'll speak in a more "general" accent but when he goes back home or he's talking to a Southern friend the drawl comes out.
