    It's a no for me. I usually agree with everyone you say, but I'm avoiding this one, for various reasons - but for the same reasons I mostly avoid the other bigger sets for investing purposes. Reason #1 - this particular set is too big to store (physically). I can get 10 other sets in storage in it's place, #2 - it has too big a starting price (unless it's discounted big, which I doubt it will be), #3 - return on investment. I look for at least 50% return (after shipping and eBay/PayPal fees and income tax). I doubt I would make that with this set. Would anyone want to pay £550-600 for this, even in 3 or 4 years after retirement? I doubt it. And it would be costly to ship - might even be cheaper to drive to the customer with it! #4 - There's a lot more people into Lego investing these days, so the risk is higher for a specialist set like this - it's aimed at a niche market to begin with. #5 - There is always someone else willing to undercut you. (and there's the nasty topic of people who steal large sets and sell them, and such people can/will sell them a lot more cheaply than me and still make a profit - it's obvious to see who they are on eBay). Also, some of the big Technic cars have seen large discounts recently on Amazon, which that means lots of people have bought them - and lots of investors have bought them too. Will there really that much demand for these large ticket sets in the future when lots of people have bought them now? I won't be buying any Pianos either. Barracuda Bay is an obvious choice to get (and I plan on getting many of these in the next 12 months). These have limited availability (which is the thing to watch for), and they look interesting, same with the new Ecto 1 and any of the modulars, as they always sell (but even then, you have to wait for a few years), but the very large sets are too risky for me. I will be getting the new Ninjago City Gardens - but this would be for my son (I already have the other two large Ninjago City and Docks sets in waiting for him - he's only 3 years old at present, and I plan on giving him all three sets at once for Christmas when he gets older - I hope he likes Lego!). I have one 42056 Technic Porsche GT3 RS in stock (the orange one), one Technic Bugatti and one Technic Sian. I might wait and sell all three as a bundle in a few years time. Hopefully I'll find someone who would like to buy all three at once (or four, by that time), but even then I'm not expecting a big return. I find the mid-range sets a much more worth it - for example, I've made 90% profit on each 71699 I've sold in the last week (6 of them this week alone). Even the Friends line can be worthwhile. So sorry guys, it's not for me this time...

      Thanks for sharing! I am not an investor per se. I do have a few BNIB sets that I might consider investment sets. They are small/mid size sets like Ideas Research Institute, Birds, Women of NASA, and Wonder Woman (2020 SDCC). I also kept a few Brickheadz that could be either gift/resale.

      same here. Colosseum is just too big and also boring. I can't imagine too many people wanting it. I am a huge Lego geek but I don't feel any desire for this set.

      How’d you make such a profit on the thunder raider? Is that set really retiring after only 1 year? It’s going for a ton on eBay, but you must have got it for pretty cheap!

    • @paul_7078
      @paul_7078 3 года назад +2

      @@formablepond3419 Good question. 90% doesn't happen often in my experience, but I think there are some factors involved in this one: the set was not available for long (6 months then retired, here in the UK) and that it was only available to purchase at two places (in the UK - Lego.co.uk and one other retailer). There doesn't seem to be a large number of re-sellers on eBay who are selling it - so looks like a lot of people missed it. I also think that the customers who have bought it in the last week realised they had missed it, and because it's Christmas then decided to get one. There can't be that many of these sets lets out there, and seems to be collectable. It's actually a good set - and not too big, so shipping costs are small too.

    I think this could be a good investment for a very small group of investors who love massive sets and have the storage space. The resale value of massive sets is often unpredictable so one prerequisite that the investors should have is that if the set doesn't grow in value, the set can be resold at the retail price after its retirement.

      I do agreed that. First, the people who can afford over HKD$3599 (NEW & SEALED), they don't worry about space for the model. But, of course, this investment is limited to a small group of people. I am going for it just HKD3300. 🍻

    Sage like advice:
    if it increases in value - hold
    if it begins to decrease - sell
    Damn! Why didn't I think of that 😉

    Do you know if LEGO will make any new architecture sets soon? I don’t see any new sets out currently so I’m a bit sad.

    Besides opportunity cost and potential damage (potential floods), is there any downside of holding lego sets forever instead of selling in 2 or 3 years after they retire?

    • @ToyTalkGuys
      @ToyTalkGuys  3 года назад +2

      Time value of money. As long as the set continues to grow in value each year, you're making money. If it's not growing, then your money could be in another set making money. Not a huge deal, but if you want to take LEGO investing seriously, you should consider this stuff -- might make for good video content in the future.

    Lego for investing - no more- only effect of investing in lego is a big group of pissed off fans who are not able to get their sets on time for what they were really created- fun. In the meantime lego may produce so many amounts of set that the market at the and will be soaked with it. In consequences- your colloseum which took half of your living area or garage for ten years would be sold for just little bit more than you paid for it unless it got damaged in all these years.

      Ha -- sorry, I didn't give a definitive answer. 20% at such a large base price is enticing to people that want to do little work and get some rewards. It's going to be big to store and it's riskier than buying 10 different sets at $50 each (not diversified). Ultimately it's up to you to decide if you like it or not -- hopefully that helps :)
