  • The Atayal people are Taiwan’s second-largest indigenous group. Their culture is under threat, but Chen Peng-ling is keeping it alive with tourism-related projects.
    The Atayal and other indigenous peoples in Taiwan were first persecuted by European colonizers, then by Chinese settlers, then by Japanese occupiers and after 1949 by the Kuomintang government. Three years ago, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen apologized to the indigenous peoples for the discrimination they had faced for centuries. Today, most young Atayal live in big cities and are unaware of their people’s traditional culture and language. This was the same for Chen Peng-ling too, but studying geography in Taipei she found out more about her roots. She decided to go back to the ancestral home where she has been campaigning to revive the traditions and culture of the Atayal ever since. A report by Uwe Schwering.

      Most indigenous people are pro-Chinese Kuomintang in every election because the DPP is actively assimilating them into the Hokkien majority. The GOV did an average job in preserving indigenous culture, but still better than the "Indian reservation" system in the United States.

    • @sean9321

      @@GyacoYu pretty sure it's because KMT spent 60 years "making friends" with indigenous tribes. DDP did not have such robust connection when democracy kicked off. There's no evidence on DDP want to assimilate indigenous into Hokkien majority. On the other hand indigenous community won't be speaking Mandarin without KMT.

    • @GyacoYu
      @GyacoYu 5 лет назад +15

      Sean M Are you insulting the indigenous tribe to be dumb so that whoever "make friend" with them can force them give all their vote to them? I trust the indigenous peoples in Taiwan and believe they have enough wisdom to choose whoever good to them.
      The DPP portray all Hoklo (Hokkien) people to be with indigenous blood thus can "represent" the indigenous peoples. Many indigenous tribes have been annoyed by those fake indigenous claimants.

      Taiwan is the cradle of the Austronesian language family which, from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in Chile to Madagascar off Africa's east coast, covers an area of 15(!) nautical time zones, from GMT-7 where Rapa Nui is located, GMT-8, -9, -10.. crossing the date line .. then further westwards to GMT+6, +5, +4 and finally GMT+3 where Madagascar is located.
      Samoa is of course part of this family, which extends up to New Zealand in the south.

    I remember, as a kid, Taiwan only recognized 9 different indigenous groups. Good to see more focus and appreciation for their unique cultures now. I also remember going to Hualien and traveling up Taroko Gorge and seeing little old ladies with traditionally tattooed faces. They would speak their indigenous language and Japanese (from the colonial period) but would not speak Mandarin or Taiwanese. I remember feeling back then that, very sadly, soon these little only ladies would die out and their culture was being lost. I always felt more needed to be done to preserve their unique cultures. Very worth the effort.
