This is why you only use UL Wire, the short goes to where it’s shorted and stops it doesn’t take out the whole wiring harness. UL 14 gauge and 10 gauge wire. You were lucking my brother
For al the experienced mechanics that you have employed in your shop, I would think that you build and fix trucks that wound not have so many safety concerns including you Tim and your dad.
Your dad is a good man its good to see he is setting a good sample with his belt on and you without with your son standing up! top dad he is just hope your son takes safety seriously behind the wheel 👍. Appreciate the video.
Hey Tim it sure was Sooooo nice to see You and Rob back together working with each other. Glad that Roster is okay 👍 what an Awesome Truck Roster is you did a awesome job 👍.
You had your main ground disconnected. The starter was engaged because the solenoid was stuck. Therefore, the high amperage circuit to run the starter was completed by that small ground wire, which melted. There wasn’t enough current to turn the starter, but enough to melt the wires.
If a fuse was on the ground wire, also, this would not have ever happened? I know that's not something normal, but maybe not a bad idea. Maybe just a higher amp fuse.
@@tater_relocatermost trucks have more than one "ground' wire connected to the batteries. The main ground often goes to the engine block itself. Of course the frame and alternator and engine and radiator and cab are are tied together with grounding straps or cables also. This particular main ground wire appears disconnected already before the second ground was disconnected. Often the secondary ground goes to the frame. Sometimes the cables are of the same gauge and may not look different. However with a starter motor commonly creating the biggest current draw the main ground goes to the engine to accommodate that. And then their may be other commonly fused grounds such as an ECM ground and other utility grounds from an inverter or refrigerator going directly to the batteries depending on what the truck is outfitted with.
The mechanic mentioning Nolox is used in making solid electrical contact, we have used it in electrical install for the last 35 yrs. good grounds are no joke.
So very glad to see you getting back to the red classic eager to see the finished direction of all of the current projects that your working on but I know that it is a work in progress and it takes a bit of time to get things done
I'm having to deal with a few things myself all of a sudden at the Holidays so I can relate with having to prioritize business over pleasure so you can make sure all your cylinders are running at full tilt. At least you were able to catch a big problem right there where you were and you should be fortunate to be able to fix things with people you have hired on versus having to hire out and pay out a more expensive price for the fix.
A lot of ppl I have a hard time trusting their opinion on working on big trucks. Your daddy seems like someone that I would trust, iv always thought he knows what he’s talking about, he’s definitely one that your blessed to have working with you
The starter alone doesn’t explain why your ground wires to your lights were extremely hot/melted since they weren’t even on. Grounding issues and that solenoid probably. I’ve never seen low voltage cause that issue or any issue similar to it. I’ve done more restorations than I can remember and I’ve also done high voltage high amperage high end competition grade car audio systems for years. Really glad for y’all that you didn’t lose the truck or end up with serious damage. Did you buy a Blue KW? You could always buy an interior; door panels and dash out of a newer crashed Pete and upgrade the interior of Rooster. What I’d probably do is get the dash and doors leather wrapped and get rid of the wood like dash panels and do something like forged carbon fiber with a maroon clear that will match the exterior paint color.
COPPERCOAT been racing off road with it since the eighties and never lost a top end,you would not believe the top engine builders that use it, like your buddy said just another layer of protection.
That was crazy scary with the melting wire but glad it happened at the shop instead of on the road with a load on the truck!!! And Rob is the best getting the lights working again,I’m wondering what his thoughts were on the situation where??? Great to see some great things coming together for you guys as much as you put into everything I’m glad it all worked out for you guys!!! Better off although sad to miss the freedom factory shin dig its more important to keep everything going at the shop!!!!
Didn't they have an all new but homemade wiring harness put on this truck when they rebuilt the engine? Like barely a month ago? Wasn't it supposed to be better than a factory harness? Seems like I remember a lot of bragging about their wiring skills.
I can tell you that you have 4 batteries in parallel. You wanr to put the main starter wires off of one of the middle batteries. If you have them on the end battery the way you do all 4 batteries are feeding through 1 wire. If you move your main power and groind wores to one of middle batteries the current can flow from both sides to the center. It gives you more available amerage.
Enjoy watching you guys the good the bad the education with some comedy life and times with trucks or ( that Rooster wants the day off ) Can you get Bryce a belt holder for that adjustable wrench he likes so much. Lol love your channel. Good luck with the rooster monster
That is why my dad kept a wrench either in his back pocket or in the floor. I had a starter do that to me also and having a wrench to took a battery cable off is the only way to keep from burning to the ground
tim, if the main chassis ground from battery to frame isnt making good connection, the lights are the next ground source, those wires arent rated for chassis ground obviously.
Hey Tim a loose connection on the starter it happened to me back in the early days on 653 Perkins man compared to yours today it is like comparing grapes to watermelons it does happen I am so glad you caught when you did Keep it going Bro as he is looking after you from above
You guys make a great team. Wish my dad and I could've partnered together with my fitness company. Although, I doubt we would get much done lol. Stay safe out there! -Brandon
In order to have that much current / heat and not blow a fuse, the only way this can happen is there must be a short between the upstream side of the fuse and ground. Check for chafed wiring
Hate to say this but i hate light wiring, especially when it is for "marker" lights. Starter caused it, but still hate extra lights lol. Rooster looks just as good in daylight as it does at night. Keep trucking Tim
The question is after his information on the starter. The question on is there update better on the known problem. Or does he only fix them to cause a fire again later 🤷🏻♂️😉
The loose wire on the starter solenoid was probably causing most of the starter issue. I think the light wiring was probably a short and just a coincidence that both happened at the same time.
Suggest that you get cat battery disconnect switches for all of your equipment saved a lot of equipment in the mines also if you ever have a dragging starter and good batteries change your starter is been a good saving grace for me
So much for that new wiring harness. Oh that's right you chopped it all up. Oh dad said you lost ground but you cut out all those grounds that's why you have extra ground points.
That god you pulled rooster in garage to fix what you need and was able to find this before you hit the road. If you didn't catch this she could of caught of fire going down the road. Just be thankful you found it before that.
Tim, had you left when you wanted, by the time you got everything loaded and heading back from Rob's place, that would've put you right at the time and place that rollover happened. That could've of very well been you or one of your guys that was rolled over up there. Thank goodness it wasn't ! I've always lived by the little voice in your head or fate that kept me out of those bad situations. God speed , and keep up the good work!
we had the same problem in our Western star with a Detroit. the solenoid on the fire wall went bad and cooked the starter motor and almost burnt the truck down.
I have seen grounded out starters fry both termals on a battery before and 90 precent of it had too doo with a bad battery too frame ground copper coat is good thing
My 99 379 with 2ws.. What I can say is the main headlight switch.. Was problem with mine.. The problem is peterbilt feeds all other switches from main headlight switch .. I cut the bridge wiring between main switch and ran power to other switches.. Paired few switches.. The main headlight switch may be brittle and may crumble as you move it.. Goodluck
What a blessing it is to have your Dad around to help. i miss my Dad . Good video Tim
This is why you only use UL Wire, the short goes to where it’s shorted and stops it doesn’t take out the whole wiring harness. UL 14 gauge and 10 gauge wire. You were lucking my brother
tim cant stay away from fire
I am very glad that you caught this electrical problem. That is too nice of a truck to burn down.
If you go back and watch any previous videos with Rooster, you can hear a night and day difference in those starters.
Could be the wiring on your new tow machine also
Great to see Rob n SHTUBE back on the channel both you guys are meant to work together. 👍
Thank god someone was watching out for you all. Be safe to you , your family, and your trucking family. 😊
Holy crap Tim you lucky
Hey Tim it sure was Sooooo nice to see You and Rob back together working with each other. Glad that Roster is okay 👍 what an Awesome Truck Roster is you did a awesome job 👍.
@ 22:30 that door gasket will surely keep the rain out. LOL!
Like Mr Pritchard Said change the push button in the dash & put a kill switch/ battery disconnect as well on
Rooster!!!!!😎🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🇺🇸
You had your main ground disconnected. The starter was engaged because the solenoid was stuck. Therefore, the high amperage circuit to run the starter was completed by that small ground wire, which melted. There wasn’t enough current to turn the starter, but enough to melt the wires.
💯 % correct
If a fuse was on the ground wire, also, this would not have ever happened? I know that's not something normal, but maybe not a bad idea. Maybe just a higher amp fuse.
did they not disconnect that before his dad started working on the starter?
Lower voltage equals higher amperage.

Starter is shorted so it’s running power out thru the chassis and that’s why your ground wire was melted
Starter guy knows his sh*t.
That could've been real bad. Quick thinking and quicker actions stay safe.
The mechanic mentioning Nolox is used in making solid electrical contact, we have used it in electrical install for the last 35 yrs. good grounds are no joke.
Rooster is the Jaguar of the Fleet,it's a part time truck& Garage kept
Awesome granddad, dad and grandson on a truck together. All you guys are blessed staying working and travelling together. Much love from South Africa
So very glad to see you getting back to the red classic eager to see the finished direction of all of the current projects that your working on but I know that it is a work in progress and it takes a bit of time to get things done
Man!!! I'm sure glad yall found/saw that problem when yall did!!! Because I saw an peterbilt daycab burnt to the ground from that same exact problem 💯
What doesn't kill you, makes you STRONGER. Drive on Tim.

. * * * * TIM < Dim Your Lights for oncoming traffic ! @ ! ! Think about their safety ! ! !
He don't care for others
Love the content with you and your Dad! Enjoy !!!
I don’t think I ever seen ol pops behind the wheel .. NICE!! Love the family dynamics
A lot of ppl I have a hard time trusting their opinion on working on big trucks. Your daddy seems like someone that I would trust, iv always thought he knows what he’s talking about, he’s definitely one that your blessed to have working with you
Might be a good idea to put you some work lights on the back of Rooster with the night time towing and loading.
Tim I am with you things happen for a reason.
Tim good to new shop for pop he needed one ! God bless 🙏🏻🇺🇸
Man! That Cat is beautiful. I love to see you open the hood.
Man o man i Been waiting to see this ole classic finished. Kan't wait to see it finished an on the road
that cable tie you put on the loom at Robs was back to front mate (no clicks) it will slack off, check it when you get a chance
At least you caught it before you put it to work for the day or the weekend
Rob, got some serious experience when it comes to everything big rigs..

Tim,check the upper front corner off the drivers door for an air leak, you can see outside it on your Video, nice place for water to come in
you and rob would be a force to be reckoned with 😂😂😂 from that little teaser and the pinstripes that looked like it is 1 cool truck❤❤❤🙏🙏
that with the lights awesome 39.15
Great video. Thank God you caught the wiring issue. Wiring sux!!!

I still carry a WRIGHT 9AB04 open end adjustable 4 INCH USA.
Dang glad y'all found it before it was to late sry brother love ol rooster
Hi Tim Tommie from Maine watching your channel
I really like your video please show some more 😊
That’s y I always put a fues on both when I put any auxiliary stuff.
tim, if the main chassis ground from battery to frame isnt making good connection, the lights are the next ground source, those wires arent rated for chassis ground obviously.
Looks like Westen's truck is getting closer to better put back together
Hey Tim a loose connection on the starter it happened to me back in the early days on 653 Perkins man compared to yours today it is like comparing grapes to watermelons it does happen
I am so glad you caught when you did
Keep it going Bro as he is looking after you from above
This probably has not been done before, but this is a case where maybe a fuse on the ground wire might not be a bad idea maybe.
Battery isolation switches are a must.
You guys make a great team. Wish my dad and I could've partnered together with my fitness company. Although, I doubt we would get much done lol. Stay safe out there! -Brandon
What a bunch of geniuses!🤦♂️😂😂
Im glad you caught just in time before catch fire yup truck is too nice
I have always thought ever since Rooster came back to life in KY that something was not right with that starter.
You are right. Everything happens for a reason.
Man, that door seal would drive me nuts! It must leak water !
In order to have that much current / heat and not blow a fuse, the only way this can happen is there must be a short between the upstream side of the fuse and ground. Check for chafed wiring
That is a happy purring Kitty kat
Hate to say this but i hate light wiring, especially when it is for "marker" lights. Starter caused it, but still hate extra lights lol. Rooster looks just as good in daylight as it does at night. Keep trucking Tim
Low voltage will cause relays/solenoids to get stuck on.
Westens truck what happened to Westens truck we want updates on it
Nothing like the last 2 years
It doesn’t exist anymore.
Copper spray was used on oldsmobile 455 with steel head gaskets
Tim your Dad needs safety glasses on ((never go under a vehicle without them ))
I'd still change the starter button in that relay I need nothing bad or not going nothing wrong with them keep on my backups
The question is after his information on the starter. The question on is there update better on the known problem. Or does he only fix them to cause a fire again later 🤷🏻♂️😉
I wouldn’t want them working on my trucks every video something’s wrong with one of his trucks
The loose wire on the starter solenoid was probably causing most of the starter issue. I think the light wiring was probably a short and just a coincidence that both happened at the same time.
Tim I agree with you. Go get a good night sleep and relax.
Suggest that you get cat battery disconnect switches for all of your equipment saved a lot of equipment in the mines also if you ever have a dragging starter and good batteries change your starter is been a good saving grace for me
That blue NextGen looks pretty badass for a plastic truck 👍 Even better than mine.
A battery disconnect is cheap insurance for those trucks . You dodged a bullet this time .
Pop says yepppp motor gotta come on out and all lmfao
Hi Tim u have a good company I like watching you guys I want to come down and visit you guys Tommie from maine
Just a question does the driver side door on Rooster not fit right keep seeing daylight at the top corner when your filming the driver
Thank God , your have trucking Angel watching over you .
Head gaskets are made differently though now and racers back in the day were using different head gaskets back in the day.
Tim, had you left when you wanted, by the time you got everything loaded and heading back from Rob's place, that would've put you right at the time and place that rollover happened. That could've of very well been you or one of your guys that was rolled over up there. Thank goodness it wasn't !

God speed , and keep up the good work!
Great video mr gentry
Beautiful video 👏👏👏
That man is very smart
we had the same problem in our Western star with a Detroit. the solenoid on the fire wall went bad and cooked the starter motor and almost burnt the truck down.
Did it ever catch fire?
Tim check that zip tie you put up under rooster, 23:13. it’s backwards, gonna fall off.. unless you put more after the recording
I have seen grounded out starters fry both termals on a battery before and 90 precent of it had too doo with a bad battery too frame ground copper coat is good thing
Smoke test never the preferred way to check out the electrical system! 😉
I noticed that dragging when starting but figured it was just tight being new...
Tim when are You going to put the Rear Fenders on Roster???
Damn. I came through that Tuesday night, on my way to Cincinnati.
I use copper spray good stuff
I wanna see a part of a video of that big ole drive shaft spinning
Nolox is a good product for battery connections
My 99 379 with 2ws.. What I can say is the main headlight switch.. Was problem with mine.. The problem is peterbilt feeds all other switches from main headlight switch ..
