On one hand, the way Math is taught in schools can be frustratingly inflexible, emphasizing a specific method rather than using logic and problem-solving skill to get the solution in different ways. On the other, I’m sure Elira’s Dad knows what he is doing, but there is no point in getting the answer if you don’t know how you got there, which Elira needed to know as she has to solve it by herself eventually.

    • @leonguyen896

This is so true. As someone who loves math and thinks it's the easiest subject in school, it can really frustrating when you think of an elegant solution but the teacher wants you to solve it by rote memorization. It's even worse when you know more than the teacher. American public schools suck ass.

In my Highschool math exams you got points for your process as well as the answer. So you had to write down your process. Even if your answer was incorrect you could still get most of the points associated with the question from the process, since the correct parts of the process also got you points. It was possible to write down the correct answer and get less points then someone else who had an incorrect answer because they wrote down a mostly correct process while you just wrote the answer.
There wasn't a required method tho, as long as it works it works.

When I was in the UK, they'd teach you a specific way, but as long as you got to the answer you'd get all the points. Or if you don't get the answer, but were showing progress with the method taught you could get partial points.

You guy's are giving me math ,🧮 teachers ,school 🏫 flashbacks 😳! It's horrible ,😢😞😫 how many times ⏲️ I had to reset my mind, to a new math formula just to be pleased by my math teacher's 🧮! Life was hard back then in school 🏫.
