About a year ago I got rid of all my physical books except a few sentimental ones. I've never been happier. I read solely through my library now. If I had to purchase all the books I've read so far this year, I would be so unbelievably broke! This is good for your mental health. Seriously.
Glad to see more people reading from the public library💜
Same. I’m able to get books from multiple libraries - hard copy, audio, and e-books - so I've not had to buy any for quite a while. I love it.
I'm the same - got rid of most of my books about 3 years ago and now solely read library, gifted, free or borrowed books :)
Oh my
Whitney, I’m a 27 year old grown ass woman and my financial situation is absolute garbage, so no judgement here! Nobody knows what other people are going through, so I don’t know why they’d judge you on this, especially when you’re being vulnerable just by telling us that much!
the girls who get it get it 😔
GIRL I WILL BUY THOSE POLISH CAPTIVE PRINCE EDITIONS ❤
Edit: just bought!
Love this
I unhauled 200 books last month...and just purged 22 more today. I know exactly how you feel. Fun times Miss Whitney...fun times 😂😊✌
I was a "mandatory employee" during covid and I somehow amassed so many books during that time, and I thought "I will get through these no problem!" since my job was at what was considered a grocery store, and I would sit there for hours without a customer at times. But I read NOTHING at all and focused on writing instead which came to zilch. I purged my TBR which was somewhere along the lines of 80 books a year ago and while at the time I felt guilty doing so, it has been such a relief and I have not regretted one of them since. It's harder than it looks! You go girl! Read what you want, and if you don't want to later on, it doesn't matter. Chuck it and find whatever inspires you!
Money issues are nothing to be ashamed of. So many of us struggle with money in general, and that's before you get to our abysmal Healthcare system and the mountains of medicine debt. Keep moving forward and giving yourself grace. ❤
I absolutely love watching people narrow down collections into just things they really love and/or are excited about, so I can't wait to see more from this series! Best of luck!
I just want to say… you are not the only person to establish crazy rules for your TBR and then force yourself to maintain them indefinitely, because SAME. It took years for me to learn to DNF a book, and even longer to break my TBR OCD habits. Now I just wander in the woods going ooo! That one’s cover is pretty!
Some YT video I watched once mentioned that she wanted her shelves to be a curated representation of herself (interests, personality, etc). That always stuck with me and is how I decide which books make the cut in my home collection. That being said, I’m so interested to see what your system/set-up will evolve to be!! ❤
Girly pop, I absolutely LOVE this idea. Also, you’re not alone with the money problems. It’s hard out here! You’re doing great 💜
im happy for you, getting rid of clutter really helps with mental health too
I feel like if an arc is like 5+ years old, publishers won't care if you sell it to someone online. You only get in big trouble for leaking before release.
We wish you well, Whitney. We will always be here to support you no matter what.
I get a notification that whittynovels has uploaded and automatically drop everything to go watch. You and Riley Marie have been getting me through my broken leg recovery ❤
Same ❤
Yesss I got my tbr from over 200 to under 20 and it took me ages but my conclusion out of that time is: UNHAULING SETS YOU FREE. It’s so therapeutic to unhaul regularly, like take a moment every couple of months. I like “trying a chapter” to see if I like the vibe of the book if I’m on the fence about unhauling it. Basically, heck yes unhaul and feel happy! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
You are right. Let’s get back to reading for our pleasure. No rules.
Firstly, I think this a really good idea for your mood.
Secondly, I am SO GLAD you haphazardly threw Caste by Isabel Wilkerson back onto the shelf because this book is SO GOOD. It’s one of those books we’re I think the world would be a better place if everyone read it. Also for a book with so many pages/words it’s very readable and well written.
Something so satisfying about decluttering shelves
seriously! i cant wait until they’re out of my possession and my shelves are truly emptier
When I first discovered Booktube in 2016 I started just buying more and more books bc there were just so many good recommendations. But although I read I couldn’t keep up with minimising my TBR (especially as a moodreader). Then I watched a video about consumerism on booktube and sustainability of books. At that time my tbr was at about 60 books so I got rid of about 20 books and the others were still books I wanted to read. Now I have almost all the time 20 or less books on my TBR (sometimes it’s more especially on my birthday and Christmas) and I try to not leave books unread for a long time bc like you said sometime you just grow out of books.
When it comes to the sustainability part I try to borrow books from friends or from the library (although in my local library in a small German town are not the „best“ books) and I bought a kindle or buy second hand (that of course also helps with the costs). I am also not as critical anymore when it comes to how books look or in which condition books are (not when they got a pretty cover though lol). I think sometime you just have to restart to „motivate“ yourself again.
I gave up on selling my unwanted books, and now I just pop a couple in book boxes every couple of days, since there’s 4 within walking distance of my house. It‘s very nifty~ Wish there was a place in Canada where I could dump them all at once and get at least SOME money back, though~ 😅😅
Unhauls are my favorite!! Also, I was watching a few of my older videos (trying to motivate myself to film videos again) and in a reading wrap up I said I read Heartstopper because of you :)
good luck! it's super hard having to face all these books you have from ~10yrs+ ago. I have to force myself to look at my library website to see if books I 'really need' are actually old or not. I think looking at them as whether or not they'll be 4-5 stars is a great start!
The joy i get when you post !! back in 2014 I was obsessed with your videos (still am) and was so sad when you left, but you coming back has been a blessing for real. And also you are the reason why I now have a spreadsheet for my tbr...
This was such a fun video!! Love a good declutter and I feel you about making things unnecessarily difficult. I always do it with books/movies and then every so often I’ll go wait wtf just do what you want 🙄
Gordo’s honks melt my heart 🥹🥹
we talk all day long i swear
Absolutely loved this video! Excited for the series! ❤
I have gotten rid of all my TBR books a few years ago. I am a very different reader now from when I bought all those books. And I tend to just read library books. Now I only buy books that I absolutely love and want to reread for ever
I'm normally against selling arcs... but jk rowling sucks a whole bunch so get that cash girl!
I have a huge tbr (not physical though) and I really relate to the feeling of obligation to read all of them (which isn't too fun in reality) and trying to figure out a nice way to do it through a spreadsheet. I hope you'll get back to reading books you actually love asap :)
I did this about 2 years ago and now my physical tbr is under 30 books and I only tend to buy books from my all time favourite authors. Honestly, it’s so therapeutic and I much prefer my kindle now 😅
i need to prioritize my kindle more for sure!!
hey! i just stumbled upon your channel through my recommended page and i just wanted to let you know how warm your videos make me feel. i love your style of editing and the way you talk, it makes these videos super enjoyable and i‘m so happy i found you🥰
also, my physical tbr has brought me into the same predicament that you‘re currently in… thought about telling a bunch of my books too, don‘t know where tho…
Absolutely sell that arc.
Angels and Demons was so good. A total page turner. I stayed up half the night reading it. That was so many years ago but I remember how much I loved it.
I will buy the arc, name a price bestie
i’m trying to get it appraised because i honestly have no clue what it’s worth. stay tuned!
This sounds like a good plan! I just counted the other day and I have 111 books on my TBR :/ Some I’ve had for yeeeears! Just subscribed! 🎉
i definitely had like 200…. feels so much better!
So happy to see you here on YT more often now, it's like hanging out with an old friend again. I also miss you on Snapchat, there was a time when you uploaded there a lot.
i have my snap public account but always forget to post!!! i’ll have to do lil exclusive stories every now and then
Honestly feel like a kindred spirit-I’ve been on my own little journey of weeding out my shelves of books I know I’m not going to read or reread and I’m trying to get my bookshelves to either only excite me and bring me joy
so happy to see you posting more
❤️❤️❤️
How freeing 🙌 I’m excited for you!
You have the cutest babies 😻
thanks!!
You should film clearing out your Goodreads TBR!
I love that spread sheet idea.. very dialed in. :) I always had this huge pile of To Read books too. Before I had a hard time getting rid of books, but then when I needed more space I decided to just keep my favorite authors of the ones I'd already read and then keep the shelves separate ( to read and already read ) then we moved and I decided I needed to get rid of some more, so I kept only my favorites of the favorite authors or books I thought I might read again. Along with most of my To Read books.. over time.. I've really purged a lot.. Ones I'd had FOREVER and never read, ones I did actually like but didn't see myself reading again since I had so many I hadn't read.. then I went into my Self Help section and got rid of a ton I didn't think I would read again, or ones I didn't like enough to finish. Then I finalllllllllllllly talked my husband into getting rid of a lot of his business books.. Whether outdated, never read, wasn't that great, too many on one topic.. I have purged 1000's over the years.. but in the last 1-2 years we've probably gotten rid of at least 700.. Probably 250+150 ( for my husband ) .. self help for me.. probably 75 . and around 250 regular books that I had on my To Read side but just wasn't getting to.. It does feel good.. Now when I start a book that is just ehhhh. I put it in the get rid of pile straight away. Not enough time to read lame books.
Girl you should totally keep your Shatter Me collection. It’s part of your past you may love to look at one day, and if not, if the author ever takes off again in a big way, you’ll have a very valuable vintage collection!
Not now sweetie, Whitney has uploaded
I remember how jealous I was when you found that HP arc years ago 😂, also I would be interested in some of the Shatter Me goodies if you decide to sell them! P.s.: we stan a reorganizing queen 🥰
Willing to pay lots for Keaton Henson book!
Edit: I caved and bought it ahh
You’ve got this! So proud! 🎉
your eyebrows are done so nicely, they shape your face so well!!!
this is so nice!! i dont do anything to them so i feel very blessed rn haha
I kind of love this type of content!! Every time I get a notification for your channel it feels like a little gift
Get some cash for that Harry Potter arc!!!
You should put that ark of prisoner of Azkaban in an auction you’d get a lot more and it’s so rare so
That hp arc would get some SERIOUS money
long time watcher but first comment! (i think lol) so excited for the next reading vlogs and updates from the TBR! hope you can get some good reads out of this new tbr
I think its hard as well to get out the mind set of , that so cheap i'm never going to get that again, but being in a less cluttered space is actually so refreshing? All the best with selling these- deserve to go good homes!
for sure!! thank you!
an icon!! a queen!! an inspiration!!!!
❤️❤️
Selling those books is really nice of you Whitney cuz some of those books are really hard to find and really expensive on Amazon and most imp. it's your book and so it's your choice , opinion is just an opinion don't mind them☺️
Whitney ❤, I felt so seen here. Ask someone in their mid 20’s too I get the struggle to juggle it all. One day I hope we can just “… livin’ for the hope of it all…” as Taylor Swift said. We can do this!
Daaaaaang a Harry Potter ARC??? That’s probably really valuable (would be worth more if JKR wasn’t trash tho smh). That’s actually really cool though. How did you manage to find that???! I shouldn’t be jealous but I am haha.
at a used bookstore for $25!!
I’ve never seen someone on RUclips be so relatable…. Girl same on everything you said
I saw that on your TBR you had the book of story beginnings and I've read it and in my opinion it was pretty amazing and it did get me out of the reading slump I was in because I couldn't put it down
aww good!! i just bought that one
Same here. Got rid of my tbr and sold every book I didn’t see myself reading any time soon. Now I only have books left I do want to read. That got me out of a huge slump
Hahahahahahahah I burst out laughing at those polish books 🤣 I’m polish and I just didn’t expect that xD❤
omg i would love the shatter me stuff!
Unhauls are soo satisfying! :) i just had to do one too
You have seemingly activated my impulse buying persona and I just bought a book about cows.
Get rid of Marked by pc &kristen cast. The first three books were good then it was awful and tbh its sooo childish now, i tried to re read it and got the ick. I definitely dont think youd like it based in what ive seen you enjoy in the past
So, I'm a 25 year old who loves books and I'm currently waiting to go to work for a late shift. your video made my anxiety go away for a while. thank you (:
of course!! you got this ❤️
As someone who loves books, I get way too excited from watching book declutters 😅. I did this a month ago, and no joke I kept only 4 books from 100 + I bought in the span of 18 years and only had because they made my bookshelf look full. But like you brilliantly pointed out I had outgrown most of them by this point. There is something special about keeping just the ones you love and making space for new future loves. Plus the extra money is always nice not gonna lie.
This kind of inspires me cuz when I first got back into reading I bought a bunch of books that seemed remotely interesting and now I barely know what 1/2 of them are about
Les Miserables is amazing, but can be a bit of a slog through some sections. If you really want to give it a go, I recommend an abridged version. Blasphemy, I know.
hell yeah i'm so excited for this!!
I only read audio-books because I'm blind, however the idea of having like 500+ books lying around everywhere is really encouraging me to not buy new books until I've read some of the one's I've already got. And also when free books leave the free library access before I get to read them annoys me a ton so I'm trying to read more so they can't leave before I get to them.
I'm still not perfect but I'm trying to buy less than 6 new books for every 25 books I read (not including sales where I already had the book in my wishlist because it just makes sense to buy them when super cheap)
I'm also trying to read 52 library audio-books this year, I think i'll do it - i'm slightly behind right now but I can catch up.
I read a ton of books (I think last year I took 3 months off while I watched TV shows but still read about 250 books), this year I set my good reads goal to be 200 books because I'm reading much longer books (and also forgot about the reading break last year) and I'm already at about 210 and much further over my page count. So I know realistically I can get to all the books I own and on my wishlist to buy (my main issue is there's so many books I'd love to read but there's no audio version) but I really don't cope having so much choice. And do I really need to spend all this money on more books now when I already have so many options? Nope.
I think someone else already said they’d buy the arc but I’d be interested as well for sure
Selling things online is a pain! I tried for a few months (also Canadians so don't have pango books or other similar platforms) then I decided, I just need the space! I donated it to this charity garage sale fundraiser and when I went to shop for myself saw how they made so many people happy and raised funds to charity. On top of that I felt lighter having them out of my house.
I know you want to make some funds but that could be a back up plan for ARCs or hard to sell ones.
I remember the Keaton Henson phase 😂
what a time to be alive
@@WhittyNovelsI’m still in that phase… I flew to another country for his concert… I’d love to buy the music book.
I've been looking at my book shelf this past week, figuring out which books I want to get rid of. And I literally got rid of a bunch of books only a few months ago. But this will work out since I have a lot of newer books that I'm much more interested in reading than the old ones that I've had since high school.
So satisfying to watch the shelves empty out
for the 'iffy' books you can do 'read a chapter/first ten pages' thing to see, if they hold up enough to commit and keep.
so true!
I'd die for the restore me manuscript xD
My top favorite of the year so far is All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. I think you would love it it was an absolute emotional roller coaster and is one of those books you look back on and are grateful you got to experience it
It's not illegal to sell arcs just "frowned upon". You could offer it in exchange for a "donation". Or trade it for another coveted arc (?)
Love these unhaul videos!
same!!
shara wheeler is soooo good I hope you enjoy 🥰🥰🥰 I loved it sm my favourite book of the year
im so excited!!! casey has one of my favorite writing styles
please read Convenience Store Woman it is so so good!!!
i really cant wait to!
Giiiiiiirl right there with you! I'm doing better now than I was a few years ago but still not super flush and yep, teeth are expensive. "Luxury bones" if you will. (I saw that online but I'm claiming it lol) I didn't go to the dentist for a LONG time so finally found a dentist that I really like but $6k AFTER INSURANCE already this year. Hurts in so many ways.
LUXURY BONES lmao
no reason to judge yourself! it's a process
12:01 i noticed you have Dear Martin placed there. i've read the book and it's a very quick read, so if you wanna check it off your tbr to get it out of the way, that one may be an easy one to get through! :)
i sat down and read the first chapter while going through my tbr and definitely enjoyed it!
wow a 600.00 root canal.. I thought I might of needed one and thankfully I didn't because it would have been 2500.00 . then add the new crown for another 2400.00 .. brutal ! Big expenses like that are never fun, but needed and worth it.
3:29 same girl same. 💚
I think that selling popular new(er) releases might actually be a good idea because some people prefer buying their books second hand rather than from a bookstore anyway
they’ve been selling pretty well!
A lot of my tbr I don’t even own so that helps 😅
I did the same thing, the only difference is that my TBR is electronic... samples in Kindle are a dangerous option, even if it's more economic. Since Im not buying the book before checking if I actually like it, my TBR grew exponentially. 🤦🏾♀️
So now Im working my way through them to see what I want to buy at a later time or if I can find it in Kindle Unlimited for free.
Currently, I have a spreadsheet with everything in there and 2 reading journals for my "reviews" (1 for the samples, 1 for the whole books) so I know what's what when they start blurring together. 😂😂
i would love the arc too but it depends on the cost bc ya girl is also in a money drought bc my car broke down 🤦🏻♀️
If you do audiobooks- the Dutch house is a fantastic listen to- it’s read by Tom hanks! (Just so you know!)
OOOH!!! good to know!
That why I usually unhaul books when it strees out
Also you can sell books pango?
side note: your hair is so pretty!! what do you use in your hair to make it so shiny and no frizz??
thank you! i use shea moisture leave in conditioner
I recently just done this. I only kept the books I liked and my manga and graphic novels
when i mean like I mean really fell in love with
Oof i need to do this. Do books sell on depop? I had listed some box sets on poshmark because we dont have pango in Canada but its kind of slow
for months if not since last year or even before that ive been tryin to sell my books and barely sold em, ive 3 stacks of books, one is owlcrate books (none ive read lol some im interested but like u said could get from library or wtv and some im just meh not interested, another is non bookish boxes books some paperback some hardcovers some ive read some i havent and then a arcs pile to trade (the non bookish boxes books pile and the arc pile piles some are signed bc i went to yallfest and bookcon) also have a portuguese books pile (bc pt is my ntive language and back then i was buyin books in pt to read but i just dont wanna read em/ lost interest. havent heard good things/ long series) but just havent sold lately :C rn im using to display some of my dolls xD im probably gonna have to end up donating em. in less than 3 weeks im goin on a trip to portugal to vist my fam and need the money for that and for all the doll and book releases comin out these next few months. i havent been reading much either. last time i read was in april (i binged the acotar series and cruel prince books and chain of gold and chain of iron from nov to april lol) only started reading a few days ago again readin some sequels liek a court of silver flames and then maybe chain or thorns.. theres also a lot of books comin or out already tht i wanna read. and i feel ya, i lowkey live pay check to pay check , bc ofc i spend money on dolls or books or bookish things (not as much tho its usually dolls) im also livin with my mom and step dad and i work part time at retail (which i hate) but added a few more hours while on vacay before i go on vacay
I am starting to do this because I also got a bunch of books from the library I work at because when we get rid of books we get first dibs to take so I have a bunch that I just grabbed and now I am like no I am not going to read these
i own like 25 books i haven’t read and i get stressed that it’s too much
