Finding An Electrical Short Within An HVAC RTU - Fuses Keep Blowing

- The electrical short revealed in the video is one that some HVAC techs have trouble locating. It requires one tool, eyes. In worst case scenarios, we can use a megohmmeter to find these shorts, here is an older video using a Supco M500 • Carbon Tracking Example . Because they are at the top of the contactor or line side sometimes it's difficult to find, that's why the title, states "hidden electrical short". Every HVAC/R tech should be aware of this issue.

Loving the quality. So much time goes into recording, editing and publishing. Much appreciated
I appreciate the comment, cheers!
@@HVACKnowItAll keep up the good work
Glad to see you still doing commercial content! Got into commercial service a year ago and love it so much better than residential.
Weather permitting, I also prefer commerical service
i first came across your channel when i was thinking of what trade to get into. I saw your video "How To Be A Successful HVAC Apprentice". I recently got my universal EPA and i'm about 50 hours away from completing my 900 hour course. I appreciate guys like you in this field. The fact that i can go home after class and watch videos like this to help me prepare for my 1st job in HVAC is a blessing. Keep up the great work
Thank you. Good catch. Freaking lazy technicians who were just replacing fuses.
May have been someone not trained up either.
Nice catch ... Wish everyone had your attitude ... Thx ...
Great video! I’ve had the exact same issue on the same style carrier RTU. rain/snow melt was getting in on the top of the unit through screw holes. Would blow fuses very irregularly, everything wound ohm and megger out fine.
I sealed up the screws with silicone and the panel with foam insulation tape.
Replaced 3 contactors and control board
No issues for about 2 years!
Yep
Carriers are notorious for this.
Nice job Gary. Learned something today.
Thank you for the knowledge, success for "HVAC ....." ... Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia attended
Great video keep them coming happy holidays and merry Christmas to you and your family. Stay safe out there. Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge.
Good catch , they were leaving those fuses behind for the chosen one to solve
That's a 15yr old problem & Carrier makes a snow kit for the control compartment. 👌👍✌️
Excellent visual description for those who have never seen it. The new kid we just think it’s dirt and dust.
Cheers!
Thank You for the help.
I will try to recreate the water infiltration by pouring water on the unit and find where it is penetrating to the electrical. Good video
No need to do that, use a megger. I put a video link in the summary
nice work bro, good information for us to use in the field
Glad to help!
Loose connections as well will cause wires too get hot melt the wire and cause a short and blow a fuse
Great tips Craig. Thank you.

Thank you
I always hated carriers. Good money for a service tech. I used to blame phases being out of balance. Guess I was wrong.
Definitely good money when parts are in
Thanks for the knowledge!
I try lol
Great find.
Thank you sir!
Good vid gotta pay attention to detail thanks
You are the Best!
Great Job!
Great work
I have a carrier heat pump for my house, it keeps blowing fuses, and capacitors, but not throwing any codes. I’ll look for bad connections, it’s about 10 yes old. Thanks for the insight.
Thanks a lot for this video
You're welcome!
Good video 👍 buddy
I appreciate it!
Thank you.
