Good point about empowerment, nudity and choice. I think it's really healthy that this movie is generating so much conversation about sexual ethics, female empowerment, predatory males, predatory females, the culture that denies women choice in sexuality and to a lesser degree the contrast between capitalism, socialism and our misunderstanding of both.
There is a difference between a real person, and a completely fantastical fictional character in a movie. Bella is the latter. I don't really see what the point of your comment is.

I have watched Poor Things 3 times and have become obsessed with this film. Your interpretation of the various aspects of this film was perfection. Before Poor Things came into my universe, I had never heard of Yorgus Lanthimos.. He is a genius. I've started watching The Favourite and plan to watch all his films. I've read a lot of reviews of Poor Things but found yours to be exactly true as I see it. One aspect of the film nobody addressed was when Bella is shown the people who she never knew existed, she was stunned and saddened. This reminds me of when Buddha is taken out of the palace (Siddhartha) and sees poor homeless people, This starts him on his journey to enlightenment. Thank you for your excellent review.

I love this movie! I didn't pick up on her hair growing quickly, queuing into her brain development. It was just apparent that by the time she met Mark ruffalo, she was at least in adolescence...in which it was common for women to marry in young adolescence in the time period this seems to be set in.
The biggest issue people have with this movie are the pedophilic undertones and taking advantage of someone with a disability. As someone who has a disability and PTSD from CSA, I see where theyre coming from. But I also loved poor things. I loved that Bella explored life to its fullest, didnt take shit from anyone, and was still kind in the face of pure evil like her "ex" husband. Another thing I want people to note is that sure, Bella can be disabled coded.. but why can't she have sex? Further in the movie she literally says "I need money and sex." All in all, I guess its just complicated. But I loved Poor Things. But damn was Lily Gladstone robbed of best actress this year.
I get that people may have an issue with these undertones, but I also think these are important things to talk about, especially looking at the men and how they so easily take advantage of her. I read some interviews and Emma said how much she studied toddlers moving through the world to give as accurate of a portrayal as she could. And even if she was disabled, disabled people have sex. I think this movie portrays these complicated themes in a very natural way, in the sense that the sex scenes and her sexual partners aren’t sanitised for the masses, and will make the average cinema goer uncomfortable. And that means people will have conversations about it, but striking the entire thing as “pedophilic glorification” just feels so reductive and ultimately missing the point. Like Yorgos said, this story can’t be taken literally and for him, Poor Things is about a woman who gets a second chance at life, and truly lives life to the fullest to enjoy every second of it (the good and the bad). I hadn’t seen the Oscars yet 😭 but I’m not surprised at the results (though I was rooting for Lily Gladstone 😞)

Wait, you think someone who has the literal mentality of a child can consent to sex? In real life, a mentally challenged adult with an IQ under 80 cannot legally consent. Bella is comparable to both children and mentally challenged adults who are taken advantage of.
Not a prude or opposed to uncomfortable conversations. My problem with the film is it's painfully obvious it was written by a straight man. I struggled to finish it. I think women in general are tired of our own oppression being a commodity for men. Did Yorgos Lanthimos donate any proceeds from the film towards anything? No. I do believe his intent may have been....well meaning. For me, it's gratuitous art lacking insight. I think that's a common opinion for those who identify as women. Gen Z to this old Xennial. It's better than Miller's Girl though. 😂
This would have to be studied scientifically but i'm ready to speculate that trauma was never an issue, simply because the brain was confronted with a biologically full grown mature body, so it's only natural at any age to want to explore this. Also, the film alluded to the fact that the brain was developing much faster than normal, so psychologically it should be much easier for some people to accept. Humans should try to have a more relaxed mindset towards sexuality and take into consideration historical context and nature. That's reality, whether our present day culture likes it or not.

I haven't seen it, but not going to. The cinematography looks specctecular, but the story? If you want to discover the world and yourself, you have to become a prostitute, then learn about socialism??? Yuck. There are imprtant issues like addressing the fact that women who enjoyed sex were sometimes subjected to genital mutilation a 100 years ago, but this story is going way too far. I'll stick with old crazy movies like The City Of Lost Children. I loved that.

It was such a bizarre movie altogether that I thought it was nice of them to give it a happy ending. All in all, I thought it was a very solid, clever and insightful piece of work for Yorgos and Emma.
