- In my latest RUclips video, you can see how to paint a yacht in an Impressionist style. Capture the elegance of a yacht with the timeless medium of oil paints. This glimpse into my plein air process shows you insights on composition choices, the balance of what to include and exclude, and the artistic decisions that shape the final painting.

Impressionist broken color techniques deviate from the norm of glassy water reflections, opting for a traditional Impressionist style inspired by the warm broken light reflections in one part of the marina. Painting outdoors challenges us to make swift decisions. It's a learning experience where success and mistakes teach you important painting lessons. Enjoy it. ⛵🎨 #PleinAirArt #YachtPainting #ImpressionistStyle

Your teaching style is for me. I have tried plein air painting in the past without good results. This video is inspiration for me. I live in Florida, USA on a coastline. I have wanted to a paint a yacht as there are many here. I will use this video to inspire my results. Thank you, Malcolm.
My pleasure 😊
Malcolm, thank you so much for sharing this video. I learned so much. I especially appreciated that you did a scene with water.
Cheers😊
You are very welcome
Really like that painting! My favorite kind of painting experience is in plain air, and it was fun to watch you do it with your style.
Impressionist painting is also my favorite kind so your ideas here were really hitting home for me.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing ‼️. Beautiful painting 🖼🖌️. Love the color choices
Thanks so much 😊
Your videos are inspiring and insightful-always a new tip, and encouragement to experiment. Thanks
Wonderful! Thank you too
LOVED this video! The painting is lovely.
Thank you so much!
Yes please! Fun and freeing. I want to try this and paint more quickly without agonizing over detail. We’re coming into winter in Massachusetts, so I might try painting a scene out my studio window.
Have fun! Sounds like a good setting.
Lovely ! Thanks 😊Never painted water reflections, give us more please!
Thank you, I will
@@MalcolmDewey thanks Malcolm, I have autumn sketches of my place here in Quebec, lovely maple trees by the water…but petrified to start. 🙏
I find it amazing that you can paint so opaque with oil colors wet on wet. Like the thin white lines or highlights on the bushes. I paint acrylics and even titanium white tends to sink into still slightly wet layers and it gets messy rather than clean. Guess I need to change something 😅
A light touch and practice.
So beautiful! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Hi Malcolm, just letting you know that I (and I am sure a lot of others) am thrilled to see this kind of video where you're just painting. I feel like I as much if not more this way compared to other more tutorial-style videos. You could simplify them a lot more even. Just painting, no narration needed. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tip!
I respectfully disagree, I for one, [although I’m sure I speak for others as well] am still trying to learn to paint. Malcolm’s narration helps me to understand the “why” as well as the how.
May I suggest you mute the video if you prefer it without narration?
Looks great ,very. Monish, from Frances uk
Many thanks
Love the result, such a great example of simplification of a scene! Thank you, Malcolm, for sharing!❤❤❤
My pleasure!
Thank you Malcolm, for this lovely plein air demonstration. It’s a real treat to see how you simplify things and create a beautiful painting. Love the impressionistic approach here.
Many thanks Kamlesh!
Thanks, Malcolm, for the fantastic Plein Air painting. It is amazing how quickly you are able to get the shapes down whilst painting outdoors. What colours did you choose for the water components of it? How long do you allow for completion of the piece when working outdoors?
Glad you enjoyed it. Colors are the two blues, alizarin, white and lemon yellow for highlights. I am usually done in an hour. More than that and everything in the scene has changed.
@MalcolmDewey OK, so a max of 1 hour, otherwise the sun, as you say would have moved too much. That is amazing.
Thank you Malcolm for sharing with us your plein air painting day, when this wonderful painting was created! Outdoor painting is a really special skill that requires a lot of practice, quick reactions and decisions.
MAYBE one day I'll try it too😃
Thanks Vesna, you should go for it!
Thanks. I’m glad to see you are demonstrating your plein air skills. It’s a challenging technique for sure. Love your “simplicity” of the entire process -- this is something I need to concentrate on.
My pleasure! thank you
Very nice! Love the marina subject matter with boats and reflection. This helped me so much 🎉
Glad it was helpful! Thank you
Hi Malcolm, I loved being able to watch you painting plein air! I have just started doing it myself and had to be brave to get out there but it was so fun and freeing because as you said decisions have to be made quickly and so you can’t overthink things. I’d like to see how to be able to get a painting done when the light changes or the sun light disappears. Please do more painting like this!
Wonderful! I will try to do just that.
Always inspiring! Soon the snow will come here inMichigan USA and I will outdoor paint!
Sounds great! Enjoy it.
Hello Mr. Malcolm, I really like your videos and the way you teach the techniques. I have been following all your videos since I discovered them on RUclips. I have a collection of pamphlets that they give me at my church and these include some very nice drawings, but the paper It's very thin, do you think I can stick the paper on a piece of wood, give it a layer of transparent acrylic and use the same drawing to practice with oil paint, thank you for your help and keep going please 🙏☺️.
For practice and learning your craft - this sounds like a good idea. Enjoy it.
Ah wow! A beautiful painting in beautiful Port Alfred Malcolm! I recognise the Halyards hotel on the Marina. So wonderful to see you doing en plein air painting. That easel looked like quite a big one, is it a French easel? How do you handle people standing behind you staring? That’s something I’m petrified about and only go to paint outdoors in my garden or at a friends farm😅
Would love to see more plein air videos, I’m sure it will inspire me to have more confidence, it looks like such fun! Thank you so much😘
Nice to hear that you are familiar with the area. Yes it is a French easel and it is a schlep to carry. However I have a much lighter set-up too and I will show that in a video coming soon.
Everytime I learn something new! What are the dimensions of the canvas panel, Malcolm? Seems to be larger than your usual canvas (and more in acordance with what I usually purchase.) Thank you once more.
Thank you - its 23cm x 30cm (9x12")
Thank you so much.@@MalcolmDewey
