Metafields make it possible to store additional information for articles, blogs, collections, customers, orders, pages, products and other important objects in Shopify.

For the longest time, metafields could only be added by using apps such as metefields guru. Now we find a new native metafield editor directly in our Shopify Admin dashboard.
The new theme editor lets merchants add new meta fields and properties without APIs or any form of coding. This gives you much more flexibility when it comes to your store’s content. Shopify users are now free to add the content they want to their product pages.
Alongside the Online Store 2.0 updates, Shopify also introduced new metafield filters. You can apply these Liquid filters in order to output metafield information in a standard format.

Hi Jan, Awesome vid. I will be playin with meta objects to see what I can do to customize my store.
First off i want to try and define my custom sales (side line for actual pre made products) i.e. when a customer orders a custom item I have print time, material and design fee (all listed as products currently) so my top seller is now print time. and the second thing i want to do is a color picker with pictures of printed color swatches because i can only get set colors on my filaments and they vary from batch to batch. so I think that I might be able to get a work around with the meta objects.

Hey Jan, great video - thanks. Question - maybe for another video... How do you handle large amounts of meta field data and metafield localization (like care instructions). There are some bulk editors in the app store but most of them are not of much use, as the reference fields are some cryptic GIDs and therefor basically incomprehensible in itself and not usable for mapping to exisiting as well...

I have my own store and I also code..Jan you mentioned confidence. This has always been my main issue. I am so scared I might brake something. It blocks me trying in some cases. But having said that, I have never ever broken anything, quite the opposite, and I do know Shopify and i am confident about that now. I wish shopify would hire me directly to build stores for clients. Mine is a basic Plan 29.99usa, but I have learned so much while building and i have finished a cool udemy course. I also worked on Shopify Advanced/ Plus too for real well known Shopify clients.. I was a merchant for six months in a real Shopify agency company. I left cause they prefered me teaching English. I get it. Im a native, I am Irish and I live in Poland..They love me for English. But i like code Jan. I love shopify and stand by it..

The new 2.0 facceted filtering system removes tags completely, so what i wanted to know if we could add filter by metafileds in the big shop filter system? In my case this would be the easiest and fastest way to filter through products.
Also i would love to see a video on this new filtering system since its changing the whole game

I have two questions:
- What are the advantages of Shopify plus? There is no real comparison on the Shopify page, just marketing stuff.
- Also I still don't understand how a development team setup looks like for Shopify? In another video you touched on this topic. But to me it's not clear how to work on production and development env. when you are editing the Shopify backend?
Hey Özgür, great questions :-)
So Shopify plus has lower transactions fees ( if you have a high order volume it pays for itself) and also a few other features. For example you can edit the checkout, or you’d also have better options for wholesale.
As for the development workflow,
I’d use a theme copy as your staging environment. You can use Themekit or the Shopify cli to connect a theme with your local code editor. (Vs code for instance)

You can do either from the dashboard by going to Shopify discounts -> Automatic discounts
The downside of this option is that you can only do a quantity discount for one product at a time
If it isn't enough you can use a third-party app like:
apps.shopify.com/custom-pricing-discounts-by-appikon

At the moment I'm struggling with product color swatches.
The perfect option would be the color swatches links to other product color pages.
Only managed to use the color swatches working inside the same product page and having all the product color images in the same page, and that can may confuse customers, and does not look good.
Would be great if you make a video about that topic.

Hi Jan thanks for this video. really helpfull! my only question is how todo unique meta fields for variants inside a product. Currently the meta field wont change when a variant is selected. Example if we sell two types of granolas and they have different ingredients.

So I’ve been wanting to move the newsletter setting in the dawn footer and turn it into a block that first under the Heading with Rich Text, because when you have too many links on the footer link list, it leaves too much space. I learned how to create sections from here, but into regular templates. Footer however doesn’t have a template, so I don’t know how to place the footer into footer section! ;0;
