      It’s like the duck on the surface of a pond, all the work happens underwater! It’s a challenge for me to make all those long notes, I really have to focus on a maximum breath every time. Especially before a crescendo or one of the low Cs

    sounding amazing! i wanted to ask if you de-lacquered your horn yourself? if so, how did you do it? also, do you find that a de-lacquered horn plays different or is it purely cosmetic? thanks!

    • @mikeszabo5631
      @mikeszabo5631  Год назад +3

      This is my Mount Vernon Bach bell from 1953. When I bought it several years ago the lacquer was very spotty and in bad condition being so old, so I had my tech remove it. I’m not sure I really noticed a difference in how it plays. You can do it yourself but I’m too busy these days!

    Amazing sound, Mike! I want to ask you, how do play pedal tones for so long? Is it simply a matter of breathing in a very large amount of air? Or are you very efficient with your air usage? I know it's not really the right place to ask, but some tips would be greatly appreciated.

    • @mikeszabo5631
      @mikeszabo5631  Год назад +4

      Both! The main question is how do you increase air efficiency…..I’m not sure I have ever actually figured that out 100%. Buzzing helps. Relaxation helps. Play many long tones!

    Hi Mike, what a shift between pedal sound and marvelous long notes blended beautifully within the orchestra! Was that a 4th (contra) part played by a Bass?

    • @mikeszabo5631
      @mikeszabo5631  Год назад +5

      This is the 4th trombone part, Strauss doesn’t specify bass or contra, but he only wrote for contra specifically in his opera Elektra, so we can assume he wrote this part for bass trombone. It lies very well, and I can tell you having played it twice on contra, it’s much easier on bass trombone!
