How Farms Work you to my night has consitited of watch live stock that are flipping shit
We gain about 30 bushel using liquid nitrogen and a pull behind sprayer with drop tubes. But we also use 5-15-15fertilizer when we plant. We also have a tank on the front of the jd4430 our spray tractor with roundup.

Just subscribed, so, so glad to see a Farm that cultivate's still, actually that's what brought me here was seeing thumbnail on cultivation. Years ago we cultivated the potato fields, side dressed by hand then hilled. That was a few decades ago.
Looks like Travis is over lapping each end row, does that tine not apply fertilizer?
Are cultivator was smaller, the over lap meant more trips down the field for us, so we didn't do that, for sake of time.
In Spain we put NO3 in balls (the R27 nitrato) instead of pure nitoghen, very interesting the differences between Spain and USA.

might want to use two pumps vs connecting the two tanks ... will cost more but will increase uniformity ... those 12v pumps do not put out too much volume ...

It looks like you have a very uneven stand. Lots of skips and various heights of plants. Get you a white planter and you'll get a uniform crop and higher yields.

I have a similar unit and it tends to drift left and right. How do you attach the cultivator to the tractor? You set the tractor lift arms in flotation or rigid? And how about the side chains? Are they tight or loose?
In my grandfathers farm like over 60 years ago they used to mix the soil with the perfect amount of Shit he said it worked like nothing else and the smell went away when the crops started growing !

Does the cultivator rig have an agitator to keep the mix stirred up on the tractor tanks? If nothing else it would keep all of the trash in the tanks from going down to the rows quickly as the tanks empty. Also what is that big 'weed' at the edge of the first pass?
As someone who doesn't farm, I'm curious why the ends of your fields have rows perpendicular to the rows between. Aren't you destroying plants in rows on the ends of the field when you have to turn around?
Also, is there a reason for running the cultivator so that it over laps the last row cultivated on the previous run down the field? It seems like it would be more efficient without the overlap.
the ends are perpendicular because with the seeder you sometimes cant get to that part, for instance because you cant drive in to the field next to it. and because the seeder sits behind the tractor its more effecient to do the headlands like this.
The overlap is i think because the "sprayer" part isnt fitted towards the outside, because then you would spray the weeds at the edges of the fields.

the end of the fields have end rows that allow for turning around of equipment and the cultivator over lap is because the last row it is next to is a half of a row so when you turn back around it does the other half

We were planning on cultivating or corn this year and our nutritionist said that we should cultivate first then spray for weeds. What do you think we should do spray before or after cultivating

Dylan Van Straalen If you cultivate before you spray you can get rid of a good portion of the weeds so there's a chance that you wouldn't have to spray herbicide at that time.
True but all that in the row that doesn't get cultivated will grow up and seed out. Up to you though. Good luck
we're close to tasseling with some corn here in central illinois with corn and beans sprayed, how are you just now putting on nitrogen lol
and me personally thinks that cultivating corn will tear out roots and potentially hurt the corn, but your corn might be small enough still
I was curious, how fast were you guys traveling while cultivating to figure out you were putting down 7 gallons per acre.

How do you make such tight turns at the headland? I hate the fact that I drive on and damage so many plants when I turn around. Do you use the left/right brakes while turning or did you modify the tractor in some way to decrease the turning radius? I'm looking for ways to improve how I cultivate so any tips or tricks would be much appreciated.

We just kind of put it all together ourselves, not sure there's just one parts list on everything. We converted the cultivator to 6 rows from 4 and added the tanks secondhand

Corn is really a lot of work, even in a mechanized farm...liquid compost next?
We have a chicken farm(70k)...the rain runoff from our manure piles over the summer goes directly into our corn field...and it is the only corn on our farm that is still green during harvest in October. It's not the nitrogen...it's the micro.

Is there a reason for the one-row overlap?
A cultivator works the middles, between the planted rows. That means there's an odd number of cultivator gangs compared to the number of rows the cultivator is set up to work. The outside two gangs work half the middle between the outside rows-- the other half of that middle is worked on the next pass, hence the overlap.
If you moved over after each pass, two things would happen-- first, you would no longer be on mated rows, since now you've moved over an extra row (mated rows were planted together in a single pass-- for instance, they have a 12 row planter, so when cultivating they are working rows 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 going down the field, and rows 7,8,9,10,11, and 12 coming back up the field... If you moved over one row, you'd be working rows 8,9,10,11,12, and 13 on the return trip, meaning you'd be working a wide middle or narrow middle and would soon be plowing out corn with the cultivator, because no matter how carefully you plant, you'll ALWAYS be a little bit off from the previous path. Each pass you'd get off by one more row until you were finally off by 6 rows after six passes and would be back on mated rows again for one pass...
The second thing that would happen is, the row you skipped would not be cultivated well at all... the soil in the middle would be worked up somewhat, but it wouldn't be worked up close to the plants, on either side of it.
So you really want to stay on mated rows.

Irish farming They aren't big compared to the big farmers but they are your average sized family farm. Farm sizes in my area are 300-500 small 500-1500 average 1500-3000 big 3000+ Ag business
Ryan it would be interesting to do a yield test 12 in and 12 without, if cultivating helped the corn grow to make more yield. I am thinkings it is because the soil color is darker and makes the corn appear to be larger. Could also absorb more radiant heat to warm the soil in your northern latitude. Cultivating could accelerate the mineralization of organically tied up nutrients by adding oxygen. Sort of like stoking a fireplace that results in more heat now and less later. The bad thing is it breaks down the soils ability to absorb water and air in the future years.
