Wow. Simplicity at its best, Period. Totally functional and incredibly affordable. I just purchased my first ever house. Having zero , ( ZERO) Furniture, this is the project for me. As well, the lumber can easily be transported in a normal car or suv with fold down seats. I do own a lathe, so turning the legs will be a new challenge. Well done, great well lit video with good audio.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Mrs. Gabbert has one of these on my video list. You did a good job on both the half laps and the dowel joints. You're on the right track, do whatever you gotta do with what you have, make it happen and learn from it. Very cool video.
Thank you, thank you! I'm gearing up to do a full sectional with built in corner table, bumper and chase. This gave me so many ideas and tips. Much gratitude.
Muito lindo, amei... embora nn entenda nada que você falou kkkk ..mas, claro que certamente 90% é tutorial .. Parabéns pelo trabalho ficou muito legal.
I rally think when i move out ima us all of this Vids to build stuff it would be way cheaper to build and know its good handsmenship other then getting stuck in a 10 year contract and not knowing how long it will last Great work Mike i love all of your Vids Keep it up you should do Night Stands, Kitchen Table +chairs, and Storage Places it would be amazing
I'm thinking for your half-lap joints, if you put stop blocks on the piece you are cutting, you could use a router and get it done more quickly and do less chiseling.
Some libraries lend tools...worth checking your local library to see if they are one. Some areas also have tool lending "clubs" where you can borrow a tool and/or have yours maintained...blades sharpened...etc.
I really enjoyed this build. With that said , I would recommend you use a stop block on your table saw rip fence when making those cross cuts to prevent any injury from kickback. I'm not trying to be a know it all or safty police, just passing along some safety tips that were told to me. I did that a hundred times when I first got my saw. the sofa turned out nice. ...I have subscribed.
+Junk Pile O Matic I really don't know that kickback is much of a risk in that situation... I don't think so at least. Anyways thanks a lot man! I appreciate it
Ive just made it man! Thanks a lot, it took me like 1 week but seems nice, dovels are a pain in the ass, and as they dont sell biscuit cutter near, i used steel for the joints and legs are hair pin style, thanks for this diy man
So when you cut out the legs they ended up measuring 8 inches as you said you should have bought them? Im (I mean my dad LOL) is gonna build this for me and I need to know :) thank you so much and congrats, I LOVE your channel
Sweet piece Mike! Really enjoyed your commentary about the project and the issue you had with the legs at their original length. Appreciate you answering my emails during the week too! Keep up the awesome work
This was so awesome! I just found you while I was looking for a video on how to build something close to what I was looking at (it’s called a dreamer couch). And as informative and easy as you made this look, I was wondering why we couldn’t just glue two big pieces of plywood together for the seat instead of glueing all of those pieces?
That sofa build looked great but next time I would make two changes.I would make it long enough for a 6' person to sleep comfortably since your cushions were custom made. And you didn't ask but I would have a middle leg front and back. God Bless my friend.
+Frank Ingram good ideas. The reason it's the length it is, is because I made it to fit the room. If it was any longer it'd be in the walkway of my living room. Like I said in the vid; I ordered one more leg for the back center, if it still needs support I can always order another leg. I just liked the idea of only seeing the two legs in front since the back leg will be hidden.
I would only add something to hold that cushion in place a bit better. You could've requested straps at the upholstery shop and that way it doesn't move around.
Great build. I'm planning on building my own sofa, but quotes for similar sized cushions in New England are much more expensive than $200. I'm probably going to go the DIY route for that as well.
Another really sweet execution and exposition of a cool project. Well done, Mike! I tried to build a mid century chaise using a fold out foam cube chair as the cushion, in the early 90s. Interesting idea, horrible execution. what a pig that thing was. Your design is so much better!
I get by a lot on the basic tools - circular saw, some hand saws, handheld drill. All of which you can get at a swap meet or garage sale very cheap. Things can just require more prep/jigging and overall take a LOT more time than when you have a big selection of tools though
a great way to get started is garage sales. I bought a pretty good set of starter tools by picking up a tool here and there from yard/garage sales. They wont be brand new but you'll save a ton of money
Mike, which place did you use in OKC to get the cushions made? I tried to get something similar for a chair from Truman's off I-44 and they quoted me at almost $400.

Cool Couch!
The video is 7yrs old yet your sofa is so modern. I would love to have it in Japandi project. Lots of love from Brazil. ❤😮
If you don't have a biscuit joiner and biscuits and want to do this project you can also use a drill and some dowels for the main board at the bottom.
Cute... Younger and without glasses. Good work. 💐
Velcro would be nice to keep the cushions in place! Awesome build! I think I might try it myself!
+robertoms yep, already on the list haha!
If you use a non slip mat instead you could flip the cushion when you want to
Adding some tufting or buttons could kick the design up a notch. Really love it.
+edharlingen75 maybe, I like the clean lines, but thanks!
I was amazed when you stood on it. Modern glue is mindblowing.
Yes it is!
The wood will break before the glue gives way.
“Modern glue” made me laugh lol but yes I agree
MoBuilds out here catching inspo from his past self. This dudes got it.
Omg that sofa is sooooo handsome!!!!
Thank you!!
Inshallah going to make this they just look so simple and easy to do. This would be my very first own wood work I would do.
dude is a perfectionist 😫
Beautiful work. Thank you for showing this how to.
I liked this a lot because it is simple, useful, relatively inexpensive, and a weekend project! I'm going to build one too!
+Ben E That's awesome!! Good luck
Dude, you're a hero!
Looks great! Can you tell us how much you spent (or a ballpark) on the cushions and upholstery for an idea of cost? Thanks!
Love it so beautiful

+Adam Gabbert Exactly, the only way to get better is to try new things!
I love this. I teach upholstery. I'm building this!!!!! Thank you.
Great design, the final result was awesome
Thank you, thank you! I'm gearing up to do a full sectional with built in corner table, bumper and chase. This gave me so many ideas and tips. Much gratitude.

The dowels look good!
+Coffee Dude Agreed! I really dig it
I've been looking for something like this for years! Thank you so much!
Glad you dig it!
I love mid century stuff. I built a 1960s bookcase with "blonde" finish and a planter on top. I'd like to see how you would do it...
Interesting! I i want to do a bookshelf soon
Very good workaround after the legs fail !!
Thanks a lot man
All is good! Love it!
Excellent!

Maybe. I hate routers though haha!
As good a reason as any to avoid them
Love this
Nicely done!
+Mark Lindsay Thanks Mark

Mondern Builds where do you the cuoshions
That's cool you are from OKC! I grew up around 70 miles south of there. A small town called Elgin. Nice builds by the way.

Would love to know what books you have read to help you learn woodworking? Your channel is really inspiring!
Honestly, most of what I've leaned came from youtube videos haha.
Do you have any favourite youtubers/videos for beginners other than yourself?
Great! Idea! For a tiny house!
Brilliant!!!
Thanks!!

Hi, I am from Brazil. I am liking the your canal.
Cool build Mike!!
+Matthew Medeiros Thanks Matt
that is beautiful.
Thanks!
Cool. Well done.
+Keith Avery Thanks a lot!
Make a cute little side table or foot stool or planter with the pieces you cut off from the legs!
This is great!
Could you also cut the tops of the legs at an angle so that they stance a little wider? might be a cool look. Nice video too!
+DookieMeister yeah you could... Never thought about it.
Good to see you got new tools man! good investment.
+kyle pelger Thanks a lot man, no doubt.
Looks great.
Super cool 👍🏼
+Andrew Hernandez Thanks!

If only I had any of these tools.
one at a time
All you really need is a circular saw and a drill.
