So useful! Exactly what I needed!
Constructing a dropped gothic door frame…was completely flummoxed till I saw your video! Many thanks 🥰

I bumped into this by random but as a time served architectural technician and draughtsman, this was a trip down memory lane. I spent 3 years of an apprenticeship as a draughtsman and a lifetime career perfecting the art back when people actually drew things and I still remember learning all his stuff. Nicely done.

I'm just starting my build now for my winter boat work shop. My structure has a PT 2"x8" footing of 11' W x 28' L. I'm trying to figure out the height to accommodate 2 internal gantries to lift the boat off of the trailer, so that 1-I can work on the boat on a cradle and , 2-So I can refurbish the trailer. It's a 26' Sailboat. I don't want the structure to be overly tall. I just want it to be as compact as necessary to allow me to build the 2 gantries which are obviously rectangular...PT 4" x 6" posts with a double 2" x 8" across the top of each one, that will be through bolted and braced, to hold the 4 manual chain hoists with cargo webbing straps under the boat.
I built the base framing 11' wide to fill with limestone gravel for drainage and to create a compacted pad, wide enough to allow me to back the 9' wide trailer into the structure, with at least 1' on either side of the wheel wells. The boat sitting level on the trailer is about 8'-9' tall at the cabin top. But part of the rebuild is to cut off the old cabin top and extend it up by at least 8"...maybe a bit more. I'm still considering building an enclosed pilot house...but I may just go with a hard-dodger on a stainless-steel tube frame, with removable canvas. Anyway, I'm forecasting that standard 2"x4"x16' ripped in half on the table saw will be long enough to get my internal height.
But I'm not sure if 16' is long enough for the bows. What do you think?

Спасибо большое. Высчитывать стрельчатую арку долго. Но Вы показали хороший принцип построения.

Thank you for the education! Fantastic.
How would you reverse engineer it though? For example I have an already created Gothic arch opening, and I want to template it, but then work it back to the ideal straight timber’s that I’ll cut the curves out of and make a door to suit if that makes any sense?
Ie. if it was a complete circle you might start with an octagon with 8 equal bits on 22.5 degrees, how would you work that out on an old arch?
    TIA

Its not clear how you determine your compass size when bisecting the triangle for the lancet arch. Can you explain how you determined the compass width to create the bisection points

As long as the circles are large enough to overlap, they will bisect the line every time. Try it :)

It might sound strange. But why did the author not make the base and rise of each arch equal ? In that way you would immediately see which arch would give the vieuwer the most bennefit.

Did I hear correctly that of the three the Equalateral would be the strongest?

Does anyone know - What kind of math app is needed to calculate gothic arches like these? I have not found 1 app that does gothic arches.

Can hardly see the first lines of your arches, and the ones you draw with a compass-very light.
