They didn’t pull it because it sounded horrible, they pulled it because they tarnished and didn’t sell well. Those kits look and sound fucking awesome.
comments about tarnish: are you planning on storing it in your unheated garage or shed year round? be fine in a studio. we have copper snares, and copper polish.🍻
The main problem is scratches. They corrode and spread easily. This is the best one of these I've ever seen as far as how it looks and it's still beat up
Sounds like a nice concert tom kit to me. The sound is the same as the chrome and the black-chrome kits, which were always great! The problem with the copper was the material cost, and the unfixable surface blemishing. They sound great, like all pre-1980s Slingerlands.
There was a craze for this in the 70’s…interior decorating, outside of buildings ornamental etc: it’s a heavy load and a maintenance pain…oxides easily, smudges, stains …tha Worx !! BUT DAMN THEY SOUND GREAT!!
That is a GORGEOUS kit!!!!! Be super careful if you ever try to rewrap one, however... that copper sheeting will slice the fire out of your skin, even wearing gloves! Lovely kit though!
I worked at a drum shop that also did rewraps/restorations. Trust me when I say that you don't ever EVER want to remove a metal wrap from an old drum! The metal will shred your hands so tough leather gloves were a must, but the worst part is that they used an adhesive that makes Gorilla Glue look like Elmer's school glue!
I always thought Slingerland didn’t get enough popular players using them early in the game. Ludwig had Ringo, Morello, and Bonham. Gretsch had a ton of jazz guys. Rogers faded after the DC5 faded. Slingerland only had Seraphine. They tried later by signing Appice but it was too late.
I played in a band in the 70's who played Slingerland drums; sold them to my brother who still owns them. Phil Ehart of Kansas played Slingerland drums.
In addition you had Pearl entering the US market. Peter Criss was probably one the first endorsers. I remember this because Christmas of 76 I got my first real set which was Slingerland. The guy at the music store showed my dad a set of Pearl drums and made the statement about KISS. ❤
How are you folks get so worked up about that it's a beautiful looking drum set just play the darn thing it probably be when you set it up though I would wear gloves all the time so you get fingerprints all over it Good looking kid I don't think the copper hurts the sound at all it might have never mind you know Good zone and drums man they look gorgeous
The copper over wood slingerland drums failed because they were heavy, they didn't sound good at all, the shells showed fingerprints and began to tarnish almost immediately.
The problem was this copper wrap. It corroded and actually didn't look great, they looked horrible. Sound fantastic. This kit is the first I've seen in this good of condition
Yeah they pulled them because when you spill a little bit of beer on it it turns green immediately and you can't get it off . Not to mention sweaty green fingerprints from taking them off the stage.
I actually don't think that kit sounds bad at all... It's not my favorite tone I've ever heard but it's certainly not bad! It must have been the high cost of producing these kits and lack of sales? Plus, copper would dent and scratch easily, so unless you never planned on using it live, it probably looked like a beat up penny after a few gigs?
If you're gigging this kit, you would literally need to handle it with gloves. I can only imagine the issues with keeping it look perfectly. Fingerprints, tarnishing...
i knew a drummer with a similar looking silver slingerland. had a huge center ported kick head with a large 2 pad kickside dampening system. never saw that again. 🍻
It's funny. The two best sounding kits you featured were the Premier and the Slingerland. Both companies tanked. Keith Moon played Slingerland on his US tours and Premier in the UK...its his fault😂
I have the chrome version and I love them. I had the opportunity once to get the copper version and I wish that I had, those are gorgeous, but they’d sound better with Ambassadors…;)
WTF, those drums sound great! They’re probably birch or maple shells, the copper is just the wrap. I can see why maintenance would be a nightmare, and they were probably prohibitively expensive.
Has to do with the coating they put on them...didn't keep the copper from corroding when scratched. Sound great, most look awful. Watch the full video on my channel for the whole story
Maybe it’s the video, but I’m not a fan of the sound especially the Tom’s. It reminds me of a cheap fiberglass kit I used to have. I would tune that thing and it would sound completely different every time I would practice.
Just remember there's MUCH BETTER DRUMMERS THAN YOU WHO'S SPEAKING that don't even have a kit much more naturally gifted than any drummers you know , just be grateful he sent you this beautiful kit have some respect you obviously have to much gear why don't you give some of your gear to drummers that are better than you that don't have any gear or just have budget gear,i saw one of the reggae legendary drummers of the 60s and 70s doing an interview and he had a very low budget kit it made me sad but he made it sound a million dollars there's to many so called drummers out that have loads of gear old vintage cymbals and stuff they never use and never will , they should give it to less fortunate drummers DEFINITELY it anger's me to see all those guys with lockups full of gear and they think there amazing and they cannot even play the most simple shuffle they can do this and that but just can't groove .
I don't actually know what you're talking about. It's just a kit with a cool backstory of why they had to cancel it. Watch the full video. And calm down my friend 👍🏼🥁
If you want an actual answer, why profits were an all-time low, And why the company essentially dissolved.. I may be able to point you in the right direction.
i remember the video where you got this..i think its super cool and really different...i dont personally know what sounds good or bad technically..BUT its cool..
🤔 *This is a pretty old video.* However, I will say now, what I stated previously....., *"THE Copper* finishing band," *WOULD tarnish,* really quickly!! And depending on the drum sets location, *"humidity," but mostly the "finger"/"hand grease"* would "TARNISH" in a *"GREEN"* hue, that eventually *COULD NOT BE REMOVED!!!* Other than that, these are *"phenomenal sounding drums,"* especially now, with leaps & bounds technology changes!!! BOTTOM LINE, These drums back in '73, were just too hard to maintain the "aesthetic integrity," sooooo, no one really wanted *"to deal with that problem!!"* 😎🤘🏼
I’ve seen 3 of these, and this is both the first complete(ish) one, and also the first one that wasn’t patina’d to hell. I only heard one of the others played, and it was not nearly as nice sounding as this one.
It's the copper wrap. If it gets scratched their coating doesn't keep it from corroding. Most of these drum kits have more corrosion than copper at this point. This one is in great shape though
First of all. No drum is going to sound good with such a heavy drum head..! I had a Slingerland chrome covered 13’ concert Tom. It sounded horrible, as do pretty much ALL concert Tom’s.
Agree, the heads suck. Also, agree on the concert toms. This was the "pops" setup that slingerland was selling back then. And they just lose so much by leaving off that bottom head
This is just a load BS, MISS INFORMATION . SLINGERLAND drums were great . I have four SLINGERLAND kits one is a double bass six Tom's in chrome finish .
Who ever put those horrible remo pin stripes on that classic kit has no class and no good ear's obviously let a guitar player tune the kit GET SOME PROPER COATED HEADS ON THAT KIT and don't be such a guitarist.
They didn’t pull it because it sounded horrible, they pulled it because they tarnished and didn’t sell well. Those kits look and sound fucking awesome.
Correct...the full video is on my channel where I talk about all of that. They sound greay
Thanks for clarifying! I couldn't exactly tell from the short what was so horrible about the kit. (I know he said the full video explains it)
Yes they do. Have played too and they are slingy awesomeness.
Drummers:😟
Audio Techs:😍
Audio engineers: “we can work with this”
It sounds great, not hearing anything bad at all. What am I missing?
wondering the same
I think what it is, is that after one year, the drumset deteriorates, because, "copper was only made for one year".
@@thegreatpapyrus1518underrated comment😂😂
Because the finish would tarnish
@@drummerjstone
Who cares ? It’s the patina man….
Slingerland Drums were really nice, well made and sounding drums, pretty good hardware too. Ashamed they folded but that Copper kit rocks!
No, it was metal AF! 🤘
Gibson buying them is what ultimately killed them! No marketing, no attempts to salvage the brand.
comments about tarnish: are you planning on storing it in your unheated garage or shed year round? be fine in a studio. we have copper snares, and copper polish.🍻
The main problem is scratches. They corrode and spread easily. This is the best one of these I've ever seen as far as how it looks and it's still beat up
@@StephenTaylorDrums i think its beautiful. even if it turned green. does it smell like old pennies? 🤔 🍻
Sounds like a nice concert tom kit to me. The sound is the same as the chrome and the black-chrome kits, which were always great! The problem with the copper was the material cost, and the unfixable surface blemishing. They sound great, like all pre-1980s Slingerlands.
RUSH’s Neil Peart bought his now famous “Chromey” Slingerland kit with his first record deal money in 1974.
There was a craze for this in the 70’s…interior decorating, outside of buildings ornamental etc: it’s a heavy load and a maintenance pain…oxides easily, smudges, stains …tha Worx !!
BUT DAMN THEY SOUND GREAT!!
Does drums were absolutely gorgeous! Santa Clara vanguard drum and bugle corps marched with them throughout the mid-70s!
That is a GORGEOUS kit!!!!! Be super careful if you ever try to rewrap one, however... that copper sheeting will slice the fire out of your skin, even wearing gloves!
Lovely kit though!

Still sounds great and unique!❤❤❤
I played in a band in the 70's who played Slingerland drums; sold them to my brother who still owns them. Phil Ehart of Kansas played Slingerland drums.
So did Neil Peart, Chad Wackerman and a whole slew of other pros...
She's a beauty! Shell construction and sound.....???😅
In addition you had Pearl entering the US market. Peter Criss was probably one the first endorsers. I remember this because Christmas of 76 I got my first real set which was Slingerland. The guy at the music store showed my dad a set of Pearl drums and made the statement about KISS. ❤

“They didn’t sound good at all” 🙄
Sounded pretty solid to me
Horrible ? Not at all, they looked great and the sound was awesome. In the early 70's Buddy Rich was the top endorser on a white pearl kit.
The problem was this copper wrap. It corroded and actually didn't look great, they looked horrible. Sound fantastic. This kit is the first I've seen in this good of condition
I owned one of those when they first came out! It was an Octa Plus... 9 piece kit. The plus was the 12 lug top, 8 lug bottom 14"x 6.5" Maple snare. :)
The 1974 Santa Clara Vanguard made these copper over wood drums look so iconic. Definitely my favorite finish on a drum.
Love seeing drum corps on non drum corps videos
I think a saw Danny Seraphine playing these in 72 with Chicago in Omaha.
Now I know the rest of the story.
I had this Slingerland kit but in mirror chrome. Whether you liked the aesthetics or not, it was an absolute mobster when it came to sound.
Yeah they pulled them because when you spill a little bit of beer on it it turns green immediately and you can't get it off . Not to mention sweaty green fingerprints from taking them off the stage.
Bingo
The BODY on those toms is unreal
I actually don't think that kit sounds bad at all... It's not my favorite tone I've ever heard but it's certainly not bad! It must have been the high cost of producing these kits and lack of sales? I have it in black chrome overlay, 24 kick and 18 floor actually, if you put the right heads on it like single ply Aquarians it is a monster, love it
i knew a drummer with a similar looking silver slingerland. had a huge center ported kick head with a large 2 pad kickside dampening system. never saw that again. 🍻
Its sounds amazing
The oxidation of that copper must have been a nightmare for qny drummer 😂
I have a Slingerland kit from the 70s. Black diamond pearl finish. 6 pc with a 16 " and 20" floor Tom's. I frickin love it!
Patina and then seal with some lacquer?? Would look soooo sick.
I think it looks killer!
It’s copper over wood (doesn’t sound bad though), but have you heard Q Drums’ copper kits? They sound amazing.
Carl.Palmer had a large octaplus set and they had to reinforce the stage
Neil Peart had 4 of them!!
It's funny. The two best sounding kits you featured were the Premier and the Slingerland. Both companies tanked. Keith Moon played Slingerland on his US tours and Premier in the UK...its his fault😂
Looks great
Sounds amazing.
I have the chrome version and I love them. I had the opportunity once to get the copper version and I wish that I had, those are gorgeous, but they’d sound better with Ambassadors…;)
I actually love that tone
This is a very valuable kit IMO
In 1973, I was just being born.😂
Wow. That sounds awesome.
Love those old slingers
Wow .... i love it
WTF, those drums sound great! They’re probably birch or maple shells, the copper is just the wrap. I can see why maintenance would be a nightmare, and they were probably prohibitively expensive.
Yea, sound wasn't the problem. The corrosion on the shells was
I still have my Fibes copper kit. It's beat to shit but still rocks.
Video says so horrible, but they look and sound great!

i'm a beginner and I don't have the best ears, but it sounds ok to me?
So this was the first metal drum kit😮😂
shit…. i’d play it.
ELO's Bev Bevan was a Slingerland man!
Interesting seeing a kit like that, those are exact to neil pearts chromey concert toms
The solid copper kits are awesome. This copper over wood sounds good to me
Sounds pretty sick
David Robinson played these
What was so wrong with that kit? looks great and sounded good too ..
A single kit wouldn't' tank them
Throwing Copper "Live"
The answer is only gene krupa was allowed to buy that kit
Is the tone so bad?
Mic's up great
Niles,Il....grew up 5 min from there.
I’ve seen 3 of these, and this is both the first complete(ish) one, and also the first one that wasn’t patina’d to hell. I only heard one of the others played, and it was not nearly as nice sounding as this one.
I actually had 2 of these kits and sold the other because of how badly corroded it was. This one is super clean though and sounds incredible
I mean if it was wrapped in ACTUAL copper that's just gonna oxidize and look horrible
Exactly. That's why they had to pull them.
But it's just a wrap, not a true copper shell.. or am I missing something?
Oh the drama😂
It’s very flat with barely any tone, which I find odd because copper snares sound bangin most of the time
This is copper over wood
I don't get it? The kit sounds pretty good
It's the copper wrap. If it gets scratched their coating doesn't keep it from corroding. Most of these drum kits have more corrosion than copper at this point. This one is in great shape though
I don't care what rap is on it or what you're playing you either know how to play or not
Sweet looking kit! Love the sound as well!
First of all. No drum is going to sound good with such a heavy drum head..! I had a Slingerland chrome covered 13’ concert Tom. It sounded horrible, as do pretty much ALL concert Tom’s.

Lol
Sounds fantastic 👌🏼
I'm not a pin stripe hater...but why? I want to hear what the drums sound like not your sticks lol😅
Nice clickbait! I liked the part where he actually addressed what was in the title of the video…
This is a short from a long form video. It's linked with this video...the full video goes in depth into the story.
I guess I’m dumb cuz think it sounds cool.
It was the finish. It corroded. Sound was great
This is just a load BS, MISS INFORMATION . SLINGERLAND drums were great . I have four SLINGERLAND kits one is a double bass six Tom's in chrome finish .
