  • At such a demanding and delicate time, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, reflect on Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh passing on January 22nd, 2022. They offer a profound insight into the memorial week, the funeral, impact on the Plum Village community, and the overwhelming global response.
This instalment of the podcast is an intimate account of the period between the announcement of Thich Nhat Hanh’s passing and the recording of this episode: “a retreat of silence, and a retreat of remembering Thay and continuing Thay.”
Brother Phap Huu, Thay’s former attendant and current Abbot of the Upper Hamlet, shares his personal relationship with Thich Nhat Hanh and how these events have impacted him. He also shares a detailed behind-the-scenes look at the traditional ceremonies and memorial services, preparations, and processions, as well as personal stories from the Plum Village communities over the eight days following the beloved teacher’s passing.
The conversation delves into: the significance of the ceremonies’ texts; the deep practises underpinning the formalities; Thay becoming a spiritual ancestor; deep levels of aspiration; the symbolic homes for Thay’s ashes; acceptance, togetherness, and impermanence; the relevance of Thay’s teachings for years to come; and what it means to be the continuation of Thay.
The episode ends with a short meditation on continuation and gratitude, guided by Brother Phap Huu.

Zen Master Thich...such a wholesome being. Words cannot explain the humility, love, and expression of being in the here and now like Master Thich. He guided me in a time of loss and despair... Within that time of loss, I was gifted with strength, only because I felt comfortable with truthfully being free of this physicality.(Because of Master Thich)... It was apart of my soul to come across Master Thich's "Present Moment" video.(Although I've never met Thich, it felt like I've always known him). I never drifted away from the words of his teachings. Forever, he will hold a special place in my heart. I cannot see you physically, but I WILL ALWAYS SEE YOU. You've taught me patience, perseverance, and most importantly, the significance of love. Love you more than a zillion!!

There is so much wisdom and heart in this podcast. Though I have never been to France or plum village, and I have never met Thay, still I feel him as my spiritual teacher. Perhaps, in a way I can't understand, even moreso now. I am recovering from a serious injury to my leg and the wisdom shared here has given me back my hope. Not so much the hope of physical restoration, though I don't pretend that that's not there, but more the hope and the knowledge that who I am being transcends my physical limitations. I can feel my spiritual strength again! I send this brief note to you with deep gratitude.

I spent a lot of time with Thay's teachings. Hundreds of hours maybe, over years. So when I heard his lungs were struggling in the rainy season I prepared myself mentally. And in the last month when I practiced Metta, I named Thay a few times. But I, too was ill- prepared and surprised by the wrenching pain in my heart when I heard that he had passed. We are crying with you, we feel it too. What it must have been to be loved by him. He would have taught us as beautiful and deep the love was, so the depth of the loss. We are here for you. We are happy you are here. We hold you in our hearts with light and love as you cry your clouds and we grieve with you. 🙏🙏❤❤

Our dear teacher walked all his life the path of heart and he brought love to us during he was teaching and gave us inspiration.
And you all were his inspiration!
Thank you for share your warm impressions with us now that you are in a mourning phase. Your tears show us, how much you care about talking about it. Tears of sad are sign of love.
We can direct love into breathing.
We can collect love into our heart, to be thankful
We can direct love in the field, to connect with others
We can direct love in our talents, to be an inspiration for others.
The talents will come out. Diversity is the key to reach everyone.
And sometimes funny things happen than make us laugh, although we are mourning right now. Our teacher taught us not to forget to laugh.

No one is gone, unless you want them to go, if you don't want them to go, then they are with you forever.
    Some words I add to this are;

Thank you, my hand over my heart, I breathe as I listen to this and remember the week of Thay's passing. I can't find the words to describe what this meant to me.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Thay's life and teaching are forever alive. I have felt a great sorrow for Thay's passing away, and shed tears whenever I watch his lesson, because the more I know about him the more touching I feel about his lessons. I love Plum Village community and the atmosphere Thay has created. Thay has a really big impact on people's life as well as mine. I feel grateful to have benefits from Thay's lessons. I surely believe that you the Sanga and every one of us who knows Thay will be his continuation. I really hope to hear more stories and daily lessons about Thay told by his students and those who were close to him because we can learn from those simple daily stories as well. Thanks so much for sharing bro and wish you good health. With much love from Vietnam.

1:16:15 maybe in the world, many people who spend years practising at home, releasing their trauma, also feel its time to hold the torch for the new world, when old systems collapse, this grounded spirituality is here and now.
