What an efficient sawmill set up you have. I remember as a kid going to the local sawmill with my grandfather, to order a load of slabs...he used them in the kitchen oil/wood stove right up until the 80s!
Jim, the work you've done with Duke and Earl so far has been amazing, and I've enjoyed it every step of the way! In the beginning, when you first loaded them up to come home, I never would have thought they would be so tamed down and calm so soon! They seem to be growing up to be another fine draft team for you!!!!! I sure enjoy watching you work all the horses and how the obey commands. Hoping the surgical procedure for Earl goes easy for him.
Very interesting video Jim, thank you. I have to call on my wife often to lend me a hand, like Brenda, she’s a good sport. The building sure looks good. It’s worth all the time and effort to be able to look at the completed job and feel good. John

I had a feeling he was getting up close to 900. I figured he was going to fool you. He also had one foot off on the frame, so he might even be heavier than the weight you got. What a good boy he is getting to be. He just got right on there and stood quietly. I'm so glad to see your barn repaired. If I had the farm to go back to, I think a lumbermill would be one of my primary purchases. It is so expensive to buy lumber to repair anything, but if you have a lumbermill, you can keep everything in good repair. On the standing stalls, that was what I found too. Our ancestors were not stupid when they kept horses in standing stalls most of the time. I found that a horse kept in a standing stall from a young age simply knows how to back, but a horse kept in box stalls has to be taught to back, and it can be an arduous process. They also are quite used to standing next to a team mate, to making small adjustments to allow someone to move around them, and to standing quietly.
Through your good care the colts are looking great. They learn from life and your teaching too. The side of the sawmill...done old school, (done right) no pneumatic nail guns etc, looks very good.
It must feel really good to be able to make your own 2x material and not have to go and pay the crazy prices at a lumber yard. I think if you saw the prices at the lumber yard you would run that saw mill day and night making 2x material. Sure hope poor Earl gets through his tumor removal without too much distress and that he gets a clean bill of health. He sure is thriving in his new home

I wish I could actually hammer that well myself! Yes, they are the true dimensions, not the modern
Hi Jim, nice video. One question on your barn: did you put the pals directly into the soil? I guess they become rotten very quickly
Yes I did, I put oil on most of them, they will last for years
Re Earl, an old vet I knew many years ago advised me to try iodine dabbed twice daily on a facial sarcoid that my horse had. The sarcoid disappeared.
Won't you need to keep a gap (or door) in the side of the barn to get all the sawdust out? Earl is doing so good he was very patient on the scales
Yes, pleased with his progress for sure
Do you dry the lumber prior to cutting or using?
No, I didn't dry this lumber
Hey Jim, do you orient the boards for potential cupping? If so, what's best, cup in or cup out?
Probably cup out, but I don't worry about it, I just slap them on. I'm not that good of a carpenter
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim I'm milling my own board and batten and installing them green for a shop I'm building. Have never attempted this before. I'm thinking of installing the boards so the edges bow out, letting the battens seal well to the boards as the boards dry. Thanks for the reply.
Do you use Eastern hemlock?
I do some, but not in this video
How long roughy in your area would it take for them boards to dry enough to nail the other side of the batten?
Probably a month or 2 in the summer weather
