In the run-up to nearly every Summer Games, no matter what year it is or where they are held, one female American gymnast is picked for a role she likely has always dreamed of: the summer's Olympic sweetheart.
She is a pint-sized pixie whose face will be featured in television commercials and in magazine print ads. She may even grace the front of a Coke can, or a cereal box or two.
And this summer, that gymnast is Jordyn Wieber, a petite but powerful high school student from DeWitt, Mich.
Years ago, it would not have been a stretch to say that Wieber, who will be 17 this summer, would be a gymnast to watch at the London Games. She made a name for herself early on.
She reached the elite level of gymnastics when she was only 10. A few years later, she won the junior world championship in the all-around competition. In 2009, she turned heads when, as a 13-year-old eighth grader, she won the all-around at the American Cup. To capture that title, she beat her fellow American Bridget Sloan, who later that year won the world all-around title.
Since then, Wieber has been gaining momentum with hopes of winning gold in London.
Last year, in her debut as a senior-level gymnast, she won the American Cup by beating 2010 world all-around champion Aliya Mustafina of Russia, setting up what is likely to be a heated rivalry at the London Games.
Wieber then went on to win the United States national title in the all-around in a rout, scoring 121.300 points, 6.15 points ahead of second-place McKayla Maroney. It was the biggest victory at the national championships since USA Gymnastics began using the open-ended scoring system in 2006.
At the world championships last fall, Wieber continued dominating the sport. She came from behind to beat Russia's Viktoria Komova by a whisper-thin margin of 0.033 points to become the sixth American woman to win the world title in the all-around. The others are Sloan (2009), Shawn Johnson (2007), Chellsie Memmel (2005), Shannon Miller (1993-94) and Kim Zmeskal (1991). She also helped the United States women win gold in the team event.
Wieber's parents, Rita and David, say it was not hard for them to guess that Jordyn's life might end up like this. Even when she was an infant, they said, they knew she had potential to be a great athlete. It took just one glance at her to figure that out.
Even when she was 10 months old, Jordyn's calves were not Pillsbury doughboy mushy. They were noticeably muscular. Her biceps soon became so defined that other parents started asking her parents if Jordyn lifted weights.
Jordyn soon found herself in gymnastics classes because, her parents said, she looked like a gymnast. She was 4.
Under coaches John and Kathryn Geddert, Wieber evolved from a tumbling tyke into one of the world's best gymnasts.
She now does some of the sport's most difficult moves, including the Amanar vault, in which a gymnast does two full flips and two and a half twists in the air before landing blindly. On the floor exercise, her first tumbling pass is a double twisting double - two flips and two twists - which is also a rarity.
Neither her skills nor her past victories, though, will guarantee her the gold medal in London. Already, the pressure is mounting and the spotlight is blinding. The last reigning world champion to win the Olympic gold medal in the all-around was Ukraine's Lilia Podkopayeva in 1996.
Wieber, however, is out to break that streak. -- JULIET MACUR

it would have been nice to see mckayla maroney do the aminar instead of jordyn wieber. Jordyn dose have a nice vault but Mckayla is the best vaulter in the world
Actually no. The Produnova vault is the hardest vault for women to perform. But since its so hard, women rarely perform it because you need a lot a strength and stamina to perform it.
Technically, the Amanar isn't the toughest vault. The Produnova's start value is 7.1, while Amanar is 6.5.

Marina Plana heck no. She said in an interview when they asked her why she wouldn't do that vault, she said it was because she didn't want to die😂 she can do a triple tho! She's done it in a documentary.

Marina Plana you're right...simine and a lot of others prefer back tumbling and vaulting. Aly could've come close probably beck she like to tumble forward. Like her bars dismount, beam dismount, and her dos santos.

P.S. Sandra said in an interview that the gold needed to be shared between she and McKayla. That's what sportsmanship means..

at the point of this video, there was two vaults in the code considered more difficult, the tsuk 2 1/2, which was valued at 6.7, and the handspring double front, at 7.1
My dad bought a beam, and we found out that it used to be Shannon Miller's and she signed it.
So what is Produnova (7.0) or the Cheng (6.4)? The Amanar got downgraded.

I am in awe at how gymnasts are able to move in the air the way they do.
Mckayla is the best vaulter in the world and she only sat once ever and that was in the event final at the olympics!

Im just waiting for the vault to be called "Maroney" instead of "Amanar", since Mckayla is gonna start doing the triple! She'll do it for Rio 2016...
Sandra saw what happened to McKayla( on her 2nd vault), so she bented her knees to avoid injury..
its not just the fact that Mckayla has the hardest vault, its the fact that she is usually CONSISTENT and has better form and execution than anyone! but the fact is, everyone makes mistakes, and that was the only time she EVER fell on vault in competition. plus Sandra and Mckayla did the same vault, and if Sandra hadn't ridiculously bent her knees, she probably would have fallen too..
I think they meant the hardest that people actually perform in competition. The Produnova is almost unheard of, Produnova herself only landed it cleanly in competition once in 1999. Yamileh Pena of the Dominican Republic attempted it at the London Olympics but she fell on every single attempt. There are other vaults that are also as hard as the Amanar that are seldom seen like the Cheng Fei vault, which was also 6.5 difficulty, Yurchenko half on laid out rudi.
At the time of this video, the produnova and cheng vaults were (and still are) rated more difficult.
EXACTLY. its still being competed. no-one is competing it anymore. there fore its not concidered. it has to be competed to be the hardest.

Nope Yamileh landed it before London at a World Cup event and in one competition they stated that Produnova could train this vault all day and the male gymnasts vould be flabbergasted. Produnova was an exceptional vault specialist until the injuries hindered her by Sydney. Produnova> any other vault.
Now the Biles and Proudonova are the most difficult worth 6.4 difficulty

The difference in the Biles is the half into the board?
this vault's name will never change because the definition is a 2 and a half twist. if mckayla get a triple then that is a whole different skill and will be named accordingly

exactly. you can complain and go on ans on about what others HAVE done but right now the hardest vault is whats being competed
I think they say this is the hardest vault out there because no one is competing with a Produnova. I imagine if there was someone we'd have seen footage of it during the Olympics. It's been done, but it's not really worth mentioning if no one can competes it.
No matter who won, winning isn't all that makes a champion, Jordyn Weiber is a champion, the rest are second best!!

@sporteverywhere @mikfsa like mikfsa said, you more or less do need an amanar to win gold. sandra won by barely more than a tenth of a point when Mckayla SAT her second vault down. If mckayla had done her Amanar more like how she normally does it, ie. not going out of bounds, she would have won that gold even with the sit down of her second vault.
to make it the toughest vault means it has to be competed at a elite senior event. so worlds, nationals, olympics, etc.
Why is it so much harder to do 2.5 twists off the horse than on floor? It seems like women do triple twists all the time with no problem.
On floor exercise you have the power of your legs to propel yourself into the air, and its power is stronger than vault, where you have the power of your run and primarily your upper body (you block with your arms), which is why it is harder to do 2.5 twists on a vault.

You don't need to be impolite with the others, just to be seen big...And also Sandra isn't a bitch,she won it..you can't change this fact. I'm sure that if you were in the place of Sandra, qualified in rank 2, last to compete, and see the 1st qualified that falls..You would say "I need to stick and I'm Olympic champ". That Sandra did..And in this case you wouldn't say about yourself" I don't deserve it"

Produnova? Give credits to those who deserve. The women who have done produnova don't get enough recognition i don't know why. Even though they risk there life in every jump.

Calm down. Of course Izbasa deserved it. She performed the best on the day, and that's what counts. Otherwise, what's the point of competition? We may as well hand out medals based on training videos.
Shouldn't it be McKayla explaining the amanar and not Jordyn? I mean I love Jordyn but McKayla's vault is a lot better.
exactly. she didn't land it. to make it the hardest means you have to land it at the olympics. also the world cup doesn't matter compared to the olympics.

I agree that i wasn't given to her, she performed best that day, but it was definitley a luck factor. she wouldn't have won if she hadn't performed the best that day, and that day mckayla fell, so she got lucky.
and? if you don't land it at olympics and no-one else competes it as well then its not the hardest. simple. it has to be used to be the hardest. its not used anymore.

No she doesn't what you're probably thinking of is the biles which is a 1/2 twisting double layout but the amanar is a two and a half twisting single layout.But she also does the amanar on vault so yeah

Its easier on floor because you use your legs as well. On vault its all about upper body strength.
