Should postpone clapping until the place has come to a safe stop. It'd be strangely ironic if the passengers were clapping as the plane flew off the end of the runway and exploded into a huge fireball.
That did actually happen to one flight that was coming in for a landing in Canada. The plane tried to land during a rough storm in Canada and as the plane landed on the runway and the flaps were raised to slow down the plane everyone clapped...until they noticed that the plane did not slow down at all continuing to roll down the runway at full speed. The clapping turned to screams until finally the jet ended up in a ravine at the end of the runway. All 200 passengers got out of the plane in 90 seconds using the emergency shoots before the plane finally exploded in a ball of fire. You can find this incident documented on RUclips with the surviving passengers telling the reporters how everyone clapped and then suddenly screamed when they saw that the plane was not going to slow down or stop.
procksomaterman Maybe it is because firm landings are because of bad landing conditions and therefore more difficult for the pilots than usual, so everyone claps?
procksomaterman well, you applaud when you ride the roller coaster. When do people applaud when sitting in a SUV traveling in the highway? I guess sitting in the cabin of a dramatic flight is the best free entertainment people can get cause they don't know whether the drama is for real or just some daily routine of a highly skilled pilot.
Jose Carreras Actually no it can sound with the landing gear down but the pilots on this plane were probably hearing their approximate altitude(50..40...30...20...10)
You got that right, Toncontin is one of the world's most dangerous commercial airports. On 21 October 1989 a a Boeing 727 from SAHSA (now defunct airline) crashed on approach to this airport. My father was on that flight. The crash was determined to be due to pilot error. Most everybody perished, including my dad. The pilots survived. Right after the crash the locals rushed to the site, and looted whatever was available, luggage, personal artifacts, and jewelry off of dead or dying passengers.
I am very sorry for your dad, really. From what you are describing, they seem like horrible people. I have heard that Honduras is a horrible country for women in particular, with a lot of rapings and killings.
The door to the cockpit is usually closed and locked as long as there are passengers onboard, the pilots wear headsets and are listening to and communicating with ATC. And don't forget the noise from the engines. But I guess it depends on what plane we are talking about...
***** The flight attendant can hear the clap, they usually gonna tell the pilot later when they land, it's pretty obvious the pilot would know if the passengers cheers or not
the pilot just did a short field landing. It was a short runway so he didn't flare as much. Because if he did he would have floated and missed out on a good portion of runway. So he stuck the wheels down hard to give himself more room to stop.
The purpose of a flare is to slow yourself down, which decreases landing ground roll. Short field landings still require a flare, and it's recommended to do so. The more you flare the less you roll.
Aleks Biteman that's true. but you wouldn't flare as much on a short field as you would on a normal. Because of ground effect u might float and miss good runway
If anything you flare earlier to get moving slower, allowing you to touch down sooner. Ground effect takes place no matter what, and the faster you are moving the more lift you maintain due to ground effect.
+Riswan Ahmad P Most fsx pilots are young people probably teenagers like me and they say that they can fly get them in a real plane they probably will crash the thing before they get it in the air pilots know what they are doing like what riswan said hahaha
Ah, TGU... I hated flying in and outta there as a flight attendant for American. That landing freaks everyone out, including flight attendants. We had to take a special class to be able to work those types of flights. The pilots received extra training as well. Great video, thanks!
I fly in to this airport all the time. It's pretty much a 50/50 of how this landing goes. You either hit the seat in front of you because of the huge jolt, or you feel it barely at all... Definitely a memorable flight for first-time fliers
I also live in Honduras. It is bad lmao i live pretty close to the airport and shits scary, must be hell landing here when you come from a big country lol
It so annoying that people write comments saying he was coming in way too fast or even better say pilot was at least 20 knots over the correct landing speed. You are watching a low res camera with a side view. You have absolutely no way of knowing if this was too fast or not. Sure it looked fast, but so does looking out the side window of a moving car or train.
I agree with you there, however, I can safely say, with experience with aviation and watching planes take off, and land, including hard landings, this landing could have been executed a bit softer, but at least they landed..
I tried flying this on Flight Simulator X, and its pretty intense :P I got my dad to try it as well (he's a pilot with Air Canada) and he says its one of the hardest approaches he's ever done, and he's flown the checkerboard approach at Kai Tak airport (watch a video if you don't know what that is).

Anton Antonovich But trained pilots find landings like the one in this video easy. It's there job to do it. It's like you were expecting the plane to crash when in reality flying is safer today then ever before.
This is the most awesome landing I've seen on RUclips. Got to love Continental 737 pilots. I live on Guam in the middle of the Pacific and CO is usually the airline I take out here. If you ever try flying to the islands of Micronesia, these guys land on runways as short as Toncontin, but they fly over ocean then you touch down on the runway. Great video.
Landing at Toncontin? All airline pilots have to be certified to land there. That approach will make you shit your pants... A descending left U turn into a valley to land on a 6000 foot runway with a cliff at the end. No margin for error. I'd have to have a drink after every landing....

No, that's just what you do. After flying in with a lady who has flown in over 15 times, it's the way of thanking the pilot for landing safely. The roughness is just all part of the experience ;)
Nothing wrong with that landing. I was on a flight into Gatwick from St Lucia and it was very windy on the approach. The plane, a 787-300 was bouncing around all over the place. My wife, sitting next to me, was digging her fingernails into my arm. I had the window seat and was watching the wingtip flexing up and down. I was loving it! Just before we were going to touchdown wind shear caught us so the pilot hit the power and aborted. The woman in the seat behind threw up and people were screaming. Pilot went around and got us down no trouble at all on 2nd approach. Wish I'd videoed it, it was most exciting flight I've taken yet.

+ninejets i think would be glad too if someone flew me win a plane without crashing and brutally killing everyone onboard in a giant fireball
Chef Ness :3 That comment was ... well somthing
ninejets if you don't land a plane perfectly you are at risk of killing hundreds of people.
Chef Ness :3 true but the pilots are trained and fly everyday
Whew! That was a drop all right! Glad you talked that other passenger through it, it was helpful to us viewers too.
Pilot: Should we give em' a good scare?
Co-Pilot: Go for it, slam down this puppy
I like how the passengers were clapping at the end after that rough landing XD, probably sarcasm lol.
No, that's just what you do. After flying in with a lady who has flown in over 15 times, it's the way of thanking the pilot for landing safely. The roughness is just all part of the experience ;)
PanAtarax No, it is genuine. Firm landings are standard for short fields.
This would've been cool if you didn't yap the whole time!
Thad ward Exactly what I was thinking ! Smh
+Thad ward I was counting the times she said: "Like I said" -_-
Mark A Tackett She said "like I said" twice LMAO
“Like I said, like I said” 😤
Ikr , if they can't handle turbulence then walk the boulevard
I hate how everyone claps and cheers as soon as they hit the ground. Like buddy, you still going very fast along the runway
Exactly, you’re in one of the most dangerous phases of the flight at that moment
They would've looked like idiots if the plane overshot the runway and they clapped
You get a real appreciation for the plane’s speed as it banked past those homes! Wow!
As someone who’s scared of flying, if the flight attendants or pilots are not worried, I shouldn’t be worried
Wow, I just realized that Ryanair has routes to Honduras ...
oh look, there is a mountain above us :D
Oh look I liked a 5 year old comment
The interesting thing about Toncontin is that the other end of the runway leads to a steep drop off.
Jim Humphries adds in the Xtra thrill
gotta love the know-it-all narrator mansplaining
Oof, this conversation is absolutely brutal to listen to. Is there anything worse than someone who won’t stop talking when they get nervous…
I've seen harder landings. That is a difficult approach though. Special certification is required in order to fly it.
Seemed like it was going too fast to land.
the pilot didn't flare properly
Been there, and fine thst... It's a great landing... tricky...
I've been a flight attendant for ten years (which in the grand scheme of things, is not that long). People that film videos like this crack me up.
He just used the kangaroo system for landing...
1:31 JEEZ THE PLANE WAS SO LOW THE LANDING GEAR MUST OF GOT IN SOMEONES PIE
Or some guy ice cram cone u_u poor guy
I bet the view on the opposite seat would be too extreme for my heart
How to find out if a person has a negative IQ: They clap when the plane lands.
Any landing that doesn't end in disaster is awesome.
Nice video. Terrible commentary.
Love landing there.Nice people & a Beautiful place.
this is so going on youtube, good video...
Went to Honduras once. So much turbulence. Everybody was screaming. But once there, it's a beautiful place.
Gotta plant it on the runway firmly to dissipate that forward momentum. Shortest international runway in the world it is.
did someone just shout “creeper” when the plane landed or is it just me?
You could be right. For some reason I heard somebody shout "Free Bird". 🤷 Which I guess couldmake some sense
For Ice Cream!
But do they get it? ;)
So... Did you get ice cream in the end?
" First time flying"... YEAH..." Oh, we're going around a mountain! 🤯
You mean UNDER a mountain
Wow! That plane came down way too fast! That landing was crazy and scary.
I hate windows seets like this, its like you can see half of everything or nothing at all
um I Googled Honduras Airport and it came out in a list..
The fa says tegucigalpa
"Hey, look, that's the mountain right next to us...instead of below us."
clapping when a pilot land is a sign of respect. It shows the appreciation. The pilot has your life in their hand.
They're applauding because they're happy they got a free roller coaster ride
Susan Clare not exactly free, they payed for the flight which is more expensive than a roller coaster....
