How to Stain Spindles or Paint Spindles Fast using Paint Mitt

    I am at one of my recent flips and I am staining a 12 x 12 deck. The deck has 56 spindles, so I grabbed one of my trusted tools to get the job done efficiently. I have used the Paint Mitt on other projects and it is well worth it. For $6 bucks, you can't beat the value. I never tried to wash the mitts for subsequent jobs, so I can't really say whether you can or can't, try for your self and let me know.
    The only draw back I have is the mitt tends to slip out of your hands, but it isn't to the point where you can't keep going.
    Also, usually the back of the spindles doesn't get as much coverage as the front and sides, probably due to the nature of how the pressure is distributed when holding the spindles. You might find it necessary to go back and hit the back of the spindles. That shouldn't take more than a few seconds per spindle.
    You may also use the mitts to paint your deck spindles.
    Generally, I highly recommend using the mitt in lieu of a paint brush.

      Glad you think so. Only way I would paint spindles; however, I recently painted couple deck spindles with my syphon gun and it’s a game changer, only thing is you will need at least 2 coats. I have a video detailing the Critter syphon gun, check it out. I will upload a video next time I am working on a deck. Thanks for watching and supporting ✊🏼

    I've got a couple of large dorm buildings to do and there is literally several hundred square metal spindles to do , i've had a painters mitt in my shed for a few years and never used it but i might try it on these buildings , i'm not sure it'll work in oil based steel & cladding semi-gloss paint on metal as well as stain on wood though but well worth a try anyway plus it will need two coats anyway so might just work . I'll let you know how it goes.👍

      Def give it a try. I’ve also used my Critter syphon gun to spray spindles before and that was pretty gd too. Problem with spray is paint gets all over grass/plants…etc. this mitt works great IMO. Good luck 👊🏽

    I have a bunch of hollow iron rectangular spindles, which I've pre-drilled for countersinking screws and attaching to wood railing. My plan is to dip them and use paint gloves on the outside, as they'll rust on the inside if left unpainted. Any experience with this? Using a plastic plug or other stopper at the tops and bottoms of the balusters / spindles isn't an option, because they're an odd size. And no, I'm not filling them with foam insulation or any kind of "barrier" either, because water is made of small enough particles that it'll find its way inside. Thanks for posting!

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  3 года назад

      Sounds like a cool project. I am trying to follow though: you got a wood rail and you’re attaching iron spindles with screws. I am losing you when you say painting the inside...etc. are you referring to the spindles? And because they’re hallow you don’t want to leave as is? And when you screw to rail they won’t be flush mounted?

    Do you think this would work for painting interior stair spindles? (Wondering how it would work around where the tops/bottoms of the spindles meet the rail)

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  3 года назад +1

      Hi Kelly, it certainly works as long as the rail is the same color, otherwise you might want to tape the connection where the spindles meet the railing. Most cases the rail is stained, so you most probably will have to tape. I know, it sucks. Interior stairs are never easy. Thanks for watching!

    You still gotta cut all the area on top and bottom of spindarellas so that’s the time consuming part actually

      Not if your rails are wood and you’re staining with same color.

    Bought one of these mits. It sheds worse than an unkept dog. Looks terrible! More time removing the hair left behind, then it would have taken to roll and brush the wood. Wished it didn't shed. What will work without shedding and getting caught up in the stain? The old fashioned way will take a week of full time work. Help.

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  3 года назад +1

      Oh no! What gives? Did u get the same one? Maybe it’s a cheap knockoff? I used this type of Mit on several jobs, paint and stain and I never had issues with shedding or otherwise. If you want to try spraying, I can suggest the Critter, it’s pretty easy to use, but you will need an air compressor. It’s a air spray gun I use on trim and finishing cabinets and furniture. Let me know where you got your mit. Thanks for watching and your support.

      Good on you for returning it. Yea, looks like it has crappy reviews. Did it occur to you to clean/power wash the deck prior to staining??

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  4 года назад +3

      Of course, cleaning is a must before any stain or paint application IMO, it’s also good practice. Didn’t power wash this project for 2 reasons: a. It was I think around October and we had one day where the temp was up in the 50s, so didn’t have my power washer ready, and b. I didn’t think it really needed it that bad and I was happy with the results. Ultimately, I wanted to stain it a darker color anyway, so just power washing it would not have given me the look I wanted. Funny thing, I may opt to replace the spindles with vinyl ones! Upgrade.

    Would this work on Windsor chair spindles

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  3 года назад +1

      Hi, I don’t see why not except it might be too big for a chair. I would try a dense sponge maybe, it’s easier to maneuver around tight spaces. My ultimate choice for furniture is my spray gun. I use the Critter spray gun. I will be putting out a video soon. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and supporting ✊🏼

    Put a damn latex glove on first for the love of God

    • @TrueGritDevelopment
      @TrueGritDevelopment  2 года назад +2

      I actually explain in minute 1:40 how the Paint Mitt comes with a lining that keeps most of the paint/stain out and how sometimes I do use a latex glove as an added precaution. Thanks for watching and supporting ✊🏼

  • @ogelcrew
    @ogelcrew 2 года назад +2

    This is beyond elementary. Simply put on latex gloves. Top them with dollar store fitted fabric appropriate gloves or mittens. Use a small painters cup with the ridges to control the excess and avoid drips. Use your fingers and apply like lotion but smoothe and sparingly. When too saturated to control. Throw in trash and put on another pair. You need more women to show you guys how to do things that require greater dexterity.🤗🤗
