    Lee a couple of ideas for you on the blown motor. The valve relief pocket in the piston looks very thin on the piston edge. This can lead to overheating especially on the exhaust valve because there is a large area to absorb heat that can only be conducted away to the crown through a thin area. If the valve pocket cant be made smaller then think about trimming the outside edge of the pocket lower. A little less compression but it will run a lot cooler. I also saw your comment on the rods not staying centered in the piston on the pin end. One way to address this is to make a teflon button for each end of the pin that rides in the pin and has about 5 thousands clearance to the cylinder wall. They will be light. You wont need the pin cir-clips and the pin/piston wont rock. Just a thought.

      The "Flame Path " of the exhaust gasses can be an issue, from 50 + years in Motorsport, thin piston crowns can be cut away, if the gasses have an obstruction in the way

      I was thinking exactly the same thing; those edges look "born to glow" and cause pre-ignition/detonation problems, as indeed they have. Agree with the suggested solution too.

That overheated BMW engine proves that idiocy is not limited to race, creed, or country of origin, yup drive it till it dies 😀 Good job on the S54, reputation is job #1, also it is easy to buy race engine parts ready to go out of the box, but to make stock parts work, that takes time and dedication, I salute you 👋

    An owner of a engineer building company I know had the same thing happen to V8 that had a engine block delivered to them so they could do the head on this engine. the block was done by another engine builder, when they installed the engine in the car and run it on the dyno they loss oil pressure at idle but had pressure on high rpm. They took the sump off to find that the oilers had been knocked off and were in the sump looking like ball bearings. Where the piston has blown out may be caused by the edge been to thin and having a sharp edge. Radius the edge of the cut as this will help stop it from developing a hot spot, as like when you want to gas cut heavy plate in from the edge you centre punch and the edge that is burred up will heats up faster allowing you to pears the plate.

    Was just thinking what someone said further down about maybe would been best to keep the mates arrangement between you guys …. In case others decide it’s a precedent and try to squeeze out their own sweet deals out of you.
    It’s a fair point actually and goes to show how perilous being in business actually is nowadays - it’s really really difficult finding anyone anywhere that wants to be 100% honest about errors with their work or even the suggestion of it, and a sad thing that when you do the danger is the honesty is taken advantage of and people then try to screw someone over. Personally I’m not nor ever could be like that and if a person has the decency to admit fault, it makes me have all the more confidence in their abilities going forward. But that just me and it’s a shame it’s not the outlook of more people instead of viewing it as weakness and opportunity to do someone over.
    What your doing for your friend and by supporting his lad is full bore old school decency. Good on you both for the clear mutual understanding - superb!

    I would not want to go without oil cooling jets.
    It has been said that the Nissan 300ZX was able to tolerate people cranking up boost because it had oil cooling jets.
    I have heard that JE warns everyone that this can happen with their "FSR" pistons. The FSR design lowers weight and friction, but it isn't without problems.

    All good for the beemer technical 'except'--I would not be mentioning that you are covering the work. That is more of a personal/commercial undertaking and is not relevent to the engine as found. Now you have said this, lots of other spivs (and you know UK is full of them because you have dealt with some already) are going to try and get cheap work done with their sob story because this indicates you are amenable to doing it now. Keep the personal financial arrangements out of these videos to protect yourself.

    High lee I really look forward to each one of your videos always entertaining also I have seen damage like that on pistons where the sharp edges on top of get so hot that they glow red hot and this causes detonation worth looking into .

    • @bobawatsit
      @bobawatsit Год назад

      Aluminum alloys do not glow red hot ! pre ignition and detonation, usually center around combustion pressures and cylinder heats, running too high a static pressure ratio leads to the tuner retarding the ignition timing and this causes delayed cyl burn and high exhaust valve temps, and it is all down hill from there

You know what its like, strange things happen.Its why R&D exists.
