For future reference, baby birds leave the nest before they can fly. This is called "fledging," and the parent birds continue to care for them. These birds are definitely old enough to have fledged. The parents still feed them, even though they might be hopping around on the ground. In fact, even after they learn to fly they'll still spend a lot of time with their parents until they can gather all their own food.

I did just the same. Found an orphan one while I was biking. How long it took them to fly away?

Just because baby birds are out of the nest does not mean they are abandoned. The parents will continue to feed them even when they are on the ground. They were probably out getting food or up in the trees waiting for you to leave. Did you find out from your local Conservation Dept what to feed the babies? Nestlings generally need insects and worms for protein and proper nutrition. People, don't do this! If you cannot locate the nest to return them to, leave them alone and let nature have her way. In most states it is illegal to possess wild animals unless you are licensed to rescue and rehab them. Educate yourselves so you can do the right thing in a situation like this. Your local Conservation Dept has free publications you can get for this purpose. Animals die needlessly because of well intentioned but ignorant human intervention.

It's a federal crime to possess ceder waxwings without a license in the USA. I understand the some European countries allow them to be kept as pets, but it's not a good idea since they need a flock and room to fly. I cannot agree enough with your last sentence. When I was a teenager, a kitten I was trying to coax from under a deck died because a dad thought it was cute to have his shrieking children scream "here kitty!" at the traumatized animal. I had almost gotten it to come out before they showed up and scared it away from me. It ended up drowning that night in a rainstorm. Almost 20 years later and that still pisses me off.

Sorry lady, but you're confused. These are fledgling cedar waxwings. Meaning, they're old enough to be out of the nest and were most likely being taken care of by mom and dad. It's ok if you moved them away from the road, but you should have left them in a safer spot, not far from where you originally found them. Also, while cedar waxwings do eat berries, they also supplement with protein for their young. Do not just feed berries.

Brittney Hernandez its true they also eat apples and strawberries and cherries and blackberries and also raspberries. One recently is in my care due to it hitting a building yesterday was quite the loud thump my mom and I are currently feeding it and observing it closely to see if their are any injuries sustained during that hard thump it took so far none that we can see of. It has survived it's first vital 24 hours so chance of survival looks good. We plan on releasing it if possible later on when able.

@@chevygirl5960 Those are all fruits that you listed. Nestlings need protein, which is not sufficiently provided by fruit alone.
