AMAZING film! It’s quite refreshing to not have a carbon copy of the book (which is a masterpiece in its own different way), but rather a piece of cinema which takes the plot and does its own thing with it. My favourite film adaptation of Les Mis, followed by the 1935 one with Charles Laughton which is fantastic too.
What I always found confusing about the musical version is why Javert chose to confront and attempt to arrest Valjean alone in the hospital while in most other scenes Javert was always accompanied by at least two police officers. Had Javert had backup, they probably would have been able to overpower and arrest Valjean. At least in this movie version, Javert told his backup to wait outside of the hospital. Maybe Javert got a little arrogant and cocky and wanted to handle Valjean himself.
Javert thinks Valjean is extremely violent at heart and is well aware of his immense strength. He faces him alone in order to avoid risking anyone elses’ life. Javert is a fanatic, and definitely wrong, but he clearly holds his other officers in high esteem. I’m sure he wouldn’t risk his mens’ lives needlessly.
Valjean, At least, we'll see each other plains, Monsieur le maire, you'll wear a different chain... Loved that so much! I don"t see this version yet, but it's seems incredible!
“Before you say another word, Javert! Before you chain me up like a slave again, listen to me, there is something I must do!” It is great, and Liam and Geoffrey are amazing.
I didn't like this movie tbh... Didn't like how they changed Javert's character up. For starters, Javert is not that dirty of a cop. He saw those men attack Fantine, then arrested her. He would never do that. He tried to arrest her because he just arrived to the scene, seeing the man be injured and he believed him. Also, this Javert snuck into the barricade to get to Valjean? No, in the original story, he's trying to maintain law and order in france. He goes into the barricade to spy on the students and gets caught by Gavroche later. Why did they change Javert so much in this film? Plus, they made him a coward. I hate that...
Even though I don't think Uma Thurman was very good as Fantine, the way they filmed her death and the confrontation - its almost exactly like in the book. Only she was not hoping to die, she still held out hope - until Javert appeared.
the video was posted 16 years ago, i was 10........ when the movie was released, i was 1 year old...... as a 26 yo in 2023 i'm watching it for the first time. totally went bey.ond my expectation. i'm probably gonna read the original novel. watched it for liam neeson
How tall is Liam Neeson? Because Geoffrey Rush is 6' yet he looks quite small in that scene. Apperently there's only 4 inches between them. Was Liam Neeson standing on a box to make Mr Rush look punier? I wonder... Thanks for the clip, Thomas16371!
I find many who love this film, as well as the book and the musical versions, seem to not fully grasp it’s meaning. For such a vacuous culture the West has sadly become nowadays, with nominalism/positivism and moral subjectivism replacing traditional Christian social mores, I am not the least bit surprised by this. Mercy is never earned. It can’t be. If it were, it wouldn’t be mercy. Forgive. And that means EVERYONE. Yes, even the people you hate so much and clamour “lock them up and throw away the key!” because you don’t understand their political convictions. Everybody means everybody. Not “well, most people, all except that group over there.” If you have no forgiveness in your heart, then you will not be forgiven. The world cannot give you this kind of forgiveness. Only Christ can. Forgive.
This film is FANTASTIC! Neeson Rush Thurman and Danes are perfect. Especially Rush. He's the greatest Javert!
You have to love how Javert keeps up "I will find you!" as his head's smacked against a wall.
he has a one track mind. That is why it is so impressive when he finally showed mercy- it killed him to do it.
"Is a pleasure to see you again Valjean"
Amazing movie!!!
“Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“That’s a pity.”
😂😂😂
😂
Even he hates his own boss that much 😂
The most important in this scene, HE KNEW IT!!!!!
Geoffrey Rush's most brilliant performance.
I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!

God I HATED Javert in this scene! The poor woman is dying and he says the cruelest things in her final moments.
Geoffrey Rush is so gorgeous as Javert! I love him. The other three are perfect of course.
Geoffrey is awesome

it was so sad when fantine died..but i loved the remark at the end by the officer.

1998 best version!
Captain Barbossa is Javert...how perfect.
Parlay?

I love the nun's response ^_^

you love this movie I've seen it you will cry in some parts
Someone was cutting onions
I love this version. Great actors! Melody of the music is also moving - who is the composer?
The late Basil Poledouris.
One of my favorite Liam Neeson Movies of all time!
This is a really good movie
Yeah, if it were a singing Les Mis, I'd pick Quast. But for a non-singing one, Rush is perfect.
Ouch, that head smash must have hurt.
My Top 5 Liam Neeson's Best Roles
1st Douglas Macarthur
2nd High T
3rd Fujimoto
4th Jean Valjean
5th Lego Bad Cop/Good Cop
Greaaaat Moviiiieeee !!!
The Confrontation...*chuckles*
Too bad for Javert if the walls was the way it is today he would have just broken the wall.
hehehe, I thought the same thing, they also got rid of Eponine!

Neeson had lifts on in this movie
haha oh yes, he knows! ;D I lurrrrve Javert so much- Geoff makes the best Javert ever.
The difference is that in this case he broke out of a municipal jail rather than a major prison.
In this version, did Valjean and Fantine love each other
I think they did. There are scenes in the movie that support that.
Well, the confrontation in the book in not so violent I think...
Benedict Cumberbach as Valjean or Jevert?? Which best fits the actor??
Javert. No contest
Cumberbatch would be perfect as javert!
@@YouWouldntStealABag And hopefully a better singing than Crowe.

Where to watch full movie?
DId you see the Robert Hossein version? Michel Bouquet is amazing in Javert interpetation. A lot more calm and vicious, like a snake.
its a pity...lmfao
The song during the funeral. Does anybody know the title?
No, you'd have to watch the TAC version.
open mbc 2 u will find the movie right now
That's pretty much the problem with 75% of classic literature.
I would think, seeing as how Valjean is a pacifist, that the books string of events would make more sense.
@bluesun7777 The TAC version is amazing!!!!
♻️🌌🪬📚🥸
Well the movie is great this upload is absolutely terrible
I thought this was a great film.
