If anyone's confused about possible inaccuracies in this video, I can sum them up: Both the video and the animated map are playing at 133% speed, i.e. they're playing 33% too fast. (Witness how fast seconds are ticking.) The audio, however, is not in sync with this modification. For example, when Dan Robinson stops his vehicle at 4:50, the audio for said moment actually plays later, at 5:17. So the audible representation is inaccurate from start to finish. The separate videos also lose sync with each other over time. I personally would like to see a reiteration of this video with everything fully in realtime, because it has the potential of being quite interesting.
I was just about to say the same. There's also slight inconsistencies in the map graphic's representation of the tornadic wind boundary. You can see the sudden increase as Dan gets pummelled by the RFD, as the Southern flank moves over his car. I don't know how close to the ground Norman radar Station could see. I would also like to know what positions doppler on wheels was in at that time. He was right to jump into that ditch with seconds to spare. Respect to him for not showing the rear camera footage of Tim, Paul and Carl disappearing into that monster. I don't think people's morbid fascinations need to be satisfied on that score.
@@skateboardingjesus4006 My respect for Dan Robinson stems in large part from his refusal to allow this close shave to deter him from continuing to take educated risks in the future, or even-and this is the important part-suggesting that he might, since he's been asked that inevitable question before. Most people would probably at least pay lip service to the idea that "they gained a newfound respect" or other sentimentality. Dan keeps it real and scientific.

It was afterwards when I viewed Dan's video a second time - later on - that I didn't see the headlights, so either I had seen a different video or Dan made the edit after posting the original. Either way, there was no way for the Twistex Team to foresee how fast El Reno would increase in size and then become completely rain wrapped. The amateur chaser in the same area probably thought it was safe to be near the Twixtex Team because they were so experienced. I agree with everyine you wrote, Declain. What I would like to see is a requirement that people chasing a tornado have to be certified by taking a storm chasing course, a weather course, and ride the first season with an experienced storm chaser before they can venture out on their own. In my chasing days back home and later here in FInland, there's very few people who are interesting in twisters, so the roads are clear. But in some videos in Tornado Alley, I can't believe how many "weekend watchers" are out there, stopping in the middle of the road, not keeping up to speed when it's time to move further away, or pulling in front of a professional chaser taking photos or shooting a video. Everyone knows there's going to be a very serious and tragic accident. I think storm chasing communities should make petitions and collect enough signatures so they can be sent to the state legislatures to mandate certification to get amateurs from creating havoc during severe storms. Along with that, I think Dan's video escaping El Reno should be required viewing in every storm chasing course, along with Steve Talbot's vid about the safety lessons learned from El Reno and Pecos Hank's vid when he decides to get some distance from a big tornado and another forms, trapping him. Of course, he got out okay, but imagine if that happened to an amateur with no experience...
It’s amazing how DIFFERENT this tornado looks depending on location relative to the storm..Also, the way it exploded in size in such a short time is nuts, close to Jarrell.(which I’d say was worse since it was an almost “cute” looking little ribbon when it first touched down)
It's like once the tornado saw him, it targeted him. If he had kept going straight he would've been screwed, and he almost lost his life when he turned left.

How is he technically inside the tornado on the map but on his rearview camera you can still somewhat see the outer edge of the rotation? Wouldn't the winds have to be strong enough to do some ground scouring and significant tree damage to judge the width of the storm? I'm a layman so I'd appreciate a response I can understand.
The center of the storm has the much stronger winds. The winds where he's at is still rotating around the center, not just blowing straight. Even if the wind is blowing at 50 mph, if it's rotating around the center, it's part of the tornado.
Can someone answer this...if a huge wedge tornado is south of you heading somewhat erratically east and might likely turn to the northeast soon...why would you stay on it's north side and head east ahead of it???
They were focused on the condensation funnel that looked much farther way. They didn’t realize the actual tornadic wind field was right on top of them. Also when the tornado was about to and making it’s northeast turn, it sped up dramatically to 55 mph. All in the span of a couple of minutes.
because the tornado looked to be well south of them heading east and slightly south east at the time. once they started heading east and the tornado grew and shifted directions it was too late to change course. I would also assume when your in the moment you probably dont have the luxury of thinking about what you should do you just go off instinct and for some experience.

Times listed match up with the time in the bottom left hand corner of the actual tornado/driving video (quotes of what was said along with Dan's input on what he meant or what he was talking about) 6:17:29 "I want to find an east road here, I'm getting a little to close. I need to start looking for the east (road) option". The tornado was moving east at this point. I didn't want to go farther south and risk not being able to reach the next east road option to the south after Reuter Road. 6:17:45 "Power flashes". The tornado is damaging the power lines up ahead and causing arcing. The streetlight goes out. 6:18:18 "New wall cloud". Another area of circulation was organizing to the north. 6:18:28 "The wedge is rain wrapped". Referring to the main wedge tornado about a mile to the south. 6:18:57 "I don't like getting in front of tornadoes I can't see, especially huge wedges". Referring to why I don't want to go farther south than Reuter Road. 6:19:56 "What is that? I don't like the looks of that." I am surprised to see what looks like the tornado to the south rapidly approaching the road. I had expected it to be well south of me and to the west. 6:20:18 "It looks like the tornado." I now realize what is happening. 6:21:03 "It's just off to the side of the road". Referring to the tornado, which I can see is now right on me. 6:21:53 "Come on, car!" The car is not maintaining speed in the strong headwinds, due to the traction control reducing power to the wheels as they slip on the gravel. 6:22:13 "The car won't go!" 6:23:12 "I've got to get out of whatever this is" I'm still in disbelief the tornado reached Reuter Road that fast. I'm wondering if it may be a second tornado that developed to the north of the wedge. 6:23:24 "The car just isn't going" 6:23:33 "Come on! Traction control OFF!" The entire time, I have been repeatedly hitting the traction control's manual override button to turn it off, but it is not working. 6:24:03 I step out of the car and get my first look back at what I had just escaped. 6:24:22 "I just drove through that" 6:24:44 "There's debris" There are small pieces of debris falling around me. 6:24:50 "Where is it? I can't see it" From the driver's side looking north and northwest, I can't yet make out the north edge of the tornado. I was looking back to see if it was safe to stop again.
Dan didn't escape so much as got lucky. He was on the same road as Twistex. You can see their Cobalt cutting to the South in Dan's rearward-facing camera. Dan was outside his vehicle trying to get "the money shot." Laying down in a ditch is what saved his bacon.
A lot of comments saying "nobody expected it to make a left turn". I find that implausible. Most weather people know tornadoes will trend southwest to north east, any other directions it takes are temporary deviations from the norm. The twister started to the south, then did a left turn, headed east, then made a left again, to north-east, then right again for a short time, heading east, where Dan was tracking it. After all the previous left turns, he should have known another left to the north-east was inevitable. Both Dan and Twistex gambled by choosing to continue on Reuter Rd, I hope the science they gained was more than just "Stay out of the bear's cage, the vids aren't worth lives".
Tim on record on RUclips stating big tornadoes travel straight. And the smaller rope tornadoes were more dangerous in that aspect because they were unpredictable
@@JulStar13 Very easy, especially since I used to do that as a spotter for a local TV station, way back in a younger day! Anyone east and north of a tornado must know that tornadoes travel generally north-east, and any deviation will correct in time! Common knowledge from decades past.

The "chasers" that are funded, carry measuring equipment some state of the art are using less than desirable low powered, light cars, 2 wheel drive and no horsepower. That baffles me. The tourist storm chasers are not much better. Vans with a high center of gravity, catch the wind easy to flip and again no horsepower. I am yet to see any tourist wearing helmets, goggles etc..

This is about as close to death and still be alive as it gets. Tim, Paul, and Carl were about 30 seconds to 1 minute behind him, and they all died…. You need a more powerful vehicle my dude.
I don't understand. Did he not have radar or any other way of knowing the tornado's position? Just head NORTH if you want to escape it and watch from safety. It seems so simple. Maybe I'm confused. You don't have to always go South. Seems like he needlessly put himself in harms way. On purpose.
The radar chasers have access to only updates about every 5 minutes. The El Reno tornado made the sudden turn north in between radar scans, so the radar data was useless.

My man was very fortunate, had he taken a direct hit from one of the sub-vortices this could have had an ending similar to Twistex's.
He was literally 20 seconds within having the same fate as Tim. He had just that extra half mile of space.

Traction control, just pull the fuse/relay or both and it won't come on.

Just shows you can’t play with nature. They could have gone completely away from the storm at any point. Why tempt fate and put yourself anywhere close to that? Ridiculous if you ask me. I can understand if you are in the TIV 2 but traveling in a Chevy sedan? Not smart at all
This is about as close to death and still be alive as it gets. Tim, Paul, and Carl were about 30 seconds to 1 minute behind him, and they all died…. You need a more powerful vehicle my dude.
I don't understand. Did he not have radar or any other way of knowing the tornado's position? Just head NORTH if you want to escape it and watch from safety. It seems so simple. Maybe I'm confused. You don't have to always go South. Seems like he needlessly put himself in harms way. On purpose.
The radar chasers have access to only updates about every 5 minutes. The El Reno tornado made the sudden turn north in between radar scans, so the radar data was useless.
Chaser behavior in El Reno was a total clown show. Capped off by the TwistX bozos getting waxed in a 2WD vehicle with a lawnmower engine. Cringe.
