Second, it’s so funny you say this bc Jackie and I were talking a couple of months ago about whether anyone would want to come to a retreat with us where the whole point was to share knits and thoughts and try on each others things! Haha like basically our podcast but you’re part of it!

Also I happen to be knitting the Guernsey Genser but in the kid's version for my daughter while I was watching this episode! looove that pattern.

Yay! Another fun podcast Ladies! THank you so much! And I too gush about Joanna's patterns as I just finished the lovely and so elegant RIbwave. On "Make 9", I have put one together the past couple of years and my approach is to be mindful about what I already have and what is missing in staple wardrobe items (like cardigans as opposed to sweaters; or more cables as opposed to colourwork yokes; but also to continue to support favourite designers). I have 5 of the 9 completed and I might finish a 6th before the end of the year! For next year I haven't given it too much thought yet, but I will; one thing for sure is missing in my closet: more V-neck sweaters!! Looking forward to your end of year wrap up!!

My Make 9 concept is "things I want to make", with subcategories for skills I want to learn (entrelac), bandwagons to jump on (emotional support chicken), and sweaters I already have yarn for. Some of them have carried over from my 2024 Make 9 (my first ever), of which I completed 5 of the 9.

I totally agree on the not sharing patterns. I do tons of test knits, probably 95% of what I knit is test knits. The people I know can afford to buy a pattern or a book that I feel that I am giving away the designers income. I work with a lot of new designers so I am really aware of the struggle and the hard work. I do not share or ask others to share.

I would consider a “make 9 stash” theme. So you choose 9 quantities from your stash (small or large), that you want to get knit up next year. It still allows plenty of flexibility in what you actually choose to knit. And who doesn’t have a goal of stash reduction 😅

I knew you'd love Boondoggle! I'm wearing my DRK Everyday in Boondoggle right now. It is the warmest of any sweater I own, and it feels fantastic.
About books and sharing: I'm a writer and a good chunk of my income comes from book sales and royalties. I am always so grateful when people choose to buy my books, and I also expect that those who buy them may share them and I appreciate those readers as well. (This is especially true because I write for kids who don't have a lot of independent purchasing power.)
By the way, you can feel a little better about borrowing books from the public library in Canada because your government pays a small (emphasis on small) royalty to the author each time a book is checked out. This is not the case in the States.)
You're right that it is different for most independently created and sold patterns. Those designers are taking on not only the "writer" role, but they are also spending money to edit, market, and distribute their work. If they lose a pattern sale, they bear that entire cost, and if they are not yet a big name designer a handful of lost sales can equal a fairly large percentage of their income from that pattern. In general, I try to invest in the world I want to live in, which usually means buying local and paying artists -- but yeah, I share novels with my mom when I'm done reading them!
Finally, on a very different note: I would love a Marie Wallenalong and would be particularly interested in Seaton-ing alongside you. My Nutiden stash is not as diverse as yours, Jackie, and I love the idea of being able to share color ideas with fellow knitters as we go.

Omg. The dog sweater! I made one for an elderly pit bull I adopted. It was ok but too short on her body. She had the deep chest thing going on. My current dog has a thin coat and does NOT like the cold we have here in northern Alberta. 🥶 I have started a coat for her and need to make many mods on it as she has a narrow but deep chest. Oof. Each dog is so different. I have commented once or twice in this podcast alone. Haha. I just needed to say something and couldn’t hold my enthusiasm for the end. lol. Still not at the end so maybe more. Hahaha I love Long Way Homestead’s subscription. I had it for more than a year because I loved it. Only my dog is black and sheddy so… no cream sweaters for her. I want to give her a wool sweater as well. 😊

Hello ladies!! Interesting chat about patterns - I would let a friend see my book to copy a pattern, but I wouldn't send them a pattern downloaded from Ravelry for all the reasons you share! Strange distinction? The exception is Sandnes Garn patterns which are never available unless you buy their yarn, and their yarn isn't in my budget - so it makes their patterns feel out of range for most knitters. I would definitely lend or ask a friend for their patterns. As always, very inspirational knits x

So much good dicussion in here, as always! To address maybe the most unrelated comment, the "too real" tv appearance is due to too many frames being generated! Modern TVs have a "motion smoothing" technology to add in frames that aren't intended to be there to give it a more "smooth" appearance. I'm of the mind that this should ALWAYS be turned off. You can sometimes see this sort of thing in action on youtube if a YTer has a resolution setting for 60fps, vs anything 480p or lower which plays at 30 fps max. So in your case, it probably was a trick of the light, but if it did shift from 30 to 60 fps, it looks more "real" because your eyes see that the movement is smoother and more like real-world perception.

Jackie, I think you would really like Peer Gynt by Sandnes Garn. It is also round and delightful but feels much less processed. It’s more of a worsted weight though. Can’t recommend it enough!

  • @juliaann98
    @juliaann98 Месяц назад +1

Agree! A Marie Wallin in Nutiden Kal would be fun. I have my first Seaton on the needle, at the sleeve stage using Nutiden. I am very curious to hear Jackie's next color combination... neutrals? Getting ahold of the Aran book, at least in the States, has been a challenge. I ended up purchasing it directly from Marie Wallin, with another of her books to justify the postage cost. When the books were mailed, both books .pdf version were emailed to me. Too bad the .pdf version isn't an option on its own. Hint hint Marie.
Regarding the sharing of patterns: If there's a library book available then that seems to be fair game. I suggest others get the book from the library rather than sharing a pattern from it. My pattern purchases are often to support the designer, too many patterns not enough time! And rather than sharing, I encourage other knitters to purchase to support designers too. Now if I was teaching a child and/or grandchild to knit, then my purchases would likely be considered theirs too, no?

I purchased, from a local yarn shop, the Hazel Dress pattern from the Sandnes Garn 2202 Soft Knit for Women book. Later, I ordered the book from another yarn shop. I have plans to knit the Guernsey Genzer after seeing it knit by Inga of Knitting Traditions as well as the Jules Genzer. Of course there are a number of basic knits that are quite attractive.
On another note--I always try to purchase directly from the knit designer instead of through Ravelry because I'd prefer they get ALL of the money I pay. 😊

I would not feel bad about sharing a pattern with family or friends. I would feel bad if I am teaching my grand daughter to knit and tell her she needs to buy her own patterns when I own them. Our Libraries have knitting books so sharing is a thing. One could apply your philosophy of sharing to everything we purchase and use. I feel bad that I purchase Laine (not cheap) and maybe knit one pattern from it and instead go to Ravelry and purchase patterns to support designers that are similar to the designs in a book that I purchased. Many designers are inspired by each other, hence the reason so many designs look similar. I just completed the Sandnes Garn Guernsey Dec 9, 2024. I started Nov 2023. When I got to the sleeves I lost steam. So happy that I get to wear it this holiday. It is a bit heavy using the pattern yarn but will be nice a warm for the Midwest winter.

Thanks as always - so love your episodes. I actually write fiction, and I publish both traditionally with a publisher and through self-publishing as an indie author. My two cents is that when it comes to knitting patterns, books and novels, it's all about the creation of copies. Lending or passing on a used copy of a physical book is fine, because only one copy continues to exist, and only that one copy can be used at the same time. Passing on a digital copy of a book or pattern is not okay, because it inherently creates a new copy. Photocopying a book for another person or printing another copy of a digital pattern for another person is also creating a new copy, and is therefore not really fair to the author.
In most traditional publishing deals, an author receives an advance, and to some extent, this compensates the author for the creation of the book. They then earn royalties, which is some percentage of the retail price of the book. These royalties accumulate until the author has earned back the amount they were paid in the advance, and they then receive additional payments for anything in excess of that. For a new or midlist author, the advance is often only in the 2-20k range.
Indie authors on the other hand who directly self-publish with Amazon or other retailers are a lot more like indie pattern writers - there is no advance, and they spend a lot of money on editing, cover design, formatting, etc. Every single copy of the novel / pattern is going directly into their bottom line. In both traditional and indie publishing, the number of copies sold impacts whether the author will get another book contract or be able to continue producing books, but in different ways.
And in both cases, the author is spending months working on writing and editing; with a traditionally published book there will be more people involved in editing and packaging, but it's still an enormous effort.
Not sure if any of this helps, but hope maybe it does.
Also, I knit a sweater in Lamana Como Tweed this summer at a 22stitch gage and it is DELIGHTFUL. It's held up beautifully, was a joy to knit, and it's the perfect weight/warmth for fall and early winter. Highly recommend!

Wish I could get excited about a Wallin knit along but, unless things have changed, not the most size-inclusive designer…😢

I think she may have become more size inclusive in her most recent book. Not sure about the recommended ease, but my math (converting cm to inches) seems to suggest that the largest size of the Seaton has a finished bust circumference of 77 inches. Forgot to look for the smallest size . . . Anyway, may be worth checking out?

Ugh I’m so sorry about that. It’s a really widespread problem. I haven’t knit her patterns yet so not aware of the ranges

Additional question re: pattern books...do individual designers get paid per book purchased? Or it it just the publisher? It is an individual decision but I do share patterns with knitters who have zero ability to function online (elderly, low income, etc) because thats a huge barrier for them. I teach knitting classes so I do come across all kinds of knitters, so I just make the decision that feels right in each situation.

Oooh I love this and absolutely agree! And I have no idea if designers are paid anything per book!

@@knittingagoodyarnpodcast5765 It probably depends on what you are calling a "book". For something like Laine Magazine, it is unlikely that there are royalties. I'm betting, though, that a book like The Sock Project by Summer Lee, which is published by Abrams, follows a more traditional publishing model. In that case, the author would be paid an "advance" -- a contracted amount paid in one, two or three parts (Usually part gets paid for signing the contract, part for final copy submitted and approved, and sometimes another part paid when the book actually goes out into the world.) It is called an "advance" because the publisher is paying the author an amount of money they expect to earn back in sales. Only after the sales have reached that point does the author get any additional money in the form of "royalties" which might be anywhere from 5-12% of the net profit from each book sold. Most books don't "earn out" and most authors don't see royalties of any kind. But when they do, this is beneficial to the writer not only because they continue to make money, but because they and their work are perceived to be a safer bet for future book deals. So, even if you're calculating that the author might only see 25 cents from your book purchase, that purchase does make a difference.
Was that confusing? Happy to clarify if needed.

I know with cross stitch, when it's a paper (physical) pattern, you can lend, resell, pass around, etc etc. As long as you aren't making copies. So say you made a photo copy of the pattern so you could mark on it. You are supposed to destroy the copy or include the copy with the physical when it goes to someone else. If one person has the original and someone else has a copy and they're working on it at the same time, it's considered unethical (and copyright infringement). Digital copies are never to be shared.
So I think of it like a physical book, too. Only one person can be using it at a time. And legally once you buy it, its yours to sell, giveaway or lend the original as you wish. You are also allowed to make copies for personal use only (like to mark up, or to increase the size for better viewing, etc). But once you no longer have the physical copies you don't have the right for the personal use copies anymore either (hence the need to destroy any copies before it leaves your person).
The legal sharing of the book between friends is never the thing cutting into the copyright holder's bottom line. It's the illegal replication and distribution that hurts the copywrite holder.
Designers might have different opinions, and you might choose to honor their wishes, if you like. But legally they have no say in what you do with the physical original version of their patterns. It's like when a designer says you can't sell finished objects made from their pattern. If the maker decides to honor the designers wish, that's great for them. But legally the law does not include tangible items created from written instruction under the written instruction's copyright. The copywrite covers the actual written words and protects the actual written words from being replicated and distributed. Not the knowledge contained in the written words. (There was a case where one author had a process of doing bookkeeping stuff in his book and later another author described his own spin on Author A's process in his own book. Author A tried to sue Author B for copywrite infringement, but the supreme court rejected it, because copywrites are for tangible things (in this case the words used to described Author A's process), not the intangible ideas contained (in this case Author A's actual process). Baker v. Selden)

I think individual patterns are different. I would feel guilty giving a pattern to someone too. To me, books are not quite the same, but only because so many of these books are available at the library. So maybe it’s similar to “renting” a library book. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As far as the book loaning, yes they are all the same, all are copyrighted. A novel is just as much the author’s property and work as a pattern book
The quilting world is really bad about all sharing and photocopying patterns, I have seen little to none of that in the knitting universe perhaps because there are so many more free patterns
