Top fuel is one of those things in life that can't even be explained, you have to experience it in person.Television doesn't do it justice. The smell of the nitro, the sound, the ground literally shakes.12,000HP baby! 😮😮😮
I mean technically that's the same thing. The only difference between hearing a sound and feeling a sound is the amount of decibels produced, known as the sound pressure level. The closer you are to a sound, the more likely you are to feel it. Energy is lost over time and distance so you either increase the amount of energy or you decrease the amount of distance over time.
I was on the governing board of a New Zealand dragway for a number of years, and was also the start line fire/crash marshal, so I was positioned between the two at launch. I wore grade 5 headphones for my coms to the tower which worked perfectly for protecting my hearing right up to the alcohol classes. When the fuellers were launching I had to squeeze the phones against my head to stop the resonant shock inside the ear cups. That's how loud these things are!! I have spent all my 58 years around some sort of racing (speedway, stock cars, jet boats etc, and of course lots of drag racing). There is nothing on earth to compare with top fuel!! If you theoretically crossed the start line doing 200 mph in your hot car, and the fueller launched at that same moment, they would still beat you to the quarter!
Yes there IS something very MUCH like it. Top Fuel Hydro Boat Racing is up there. In the great days, Fuel Hydros ran at Puddingstone lake Californis in the early 1980's. Wadda Blast.
Back in 1964 I saw my first fuel dragster (AA/FD) run, low 8s @ around 190 mph, smoking the slicks over halfway through the quarter. It had the same effect, you could feel it in your chest as they went by... What a difference a half a century has made in performance...
@@Wire_Mesh_Police They're not automatic. There is no gearbox in Top Fuel. No transmission would survive the torque. It's just a series of clutch plates and they weld together by the end of the run. Ever seen a fighter jet demo? I'm not talking about casually flying by your house; but at an air show on base, at 500 feet, with the afterburners lit. My oldest son's first experience with Top Fuel was shocking...or at least he thought so. We were sitting on aluminum bleachers at the Texas Motorplex and the vibrations when they launched came thru the seats. He thought it was an electrical shock. It was great. BTW...we went home with black speckles all over our clothes and faces from the burnouts. 😂😂😂
Oh yeah, I recall 2003-had been invited for a holiday in the US and on one of those days we visited such an event. Starting with more or less stock cars, with increasing HP in every round. Recording-no problem. But when the first top fuel dragster pairing went full throttle, the camera suddenly took a nice flight. I was so shocked, it simply flew outta my hand-luckily almost straight up so I was able to catch it, but oh boy, that was an intense full-body all-senses experience.
I'll never forget my first time at the track. My friend talked me into going by the fence about halfway down the track, and the fence was about 50 feet from the track rail. When the jet cars went past us it started snowing in Louisiana 30 seconds later. I picked a piece up and identified it as the track crash rail paint. That was the best night of my life 🤘😁
I was at Willowbank Raceway with the last clip of Larry Dixon. What's more amazing is his previous run it sheered the rear end off and he done a 360 without hitting anything. So they patched it up with a spare rear end and he ran that number on it untested. Such a legend..

I've never been able to find it since, but YEARS ago I saw an in-car camera view of a Top Fuel run. However, in this case the camera was pointed backwards. Words cannot describe how much more of a sense of the brutal acceleration you get with that view. Everyone and everything at the starting line just shrinks into the centre of the picture before you can begin to suck in a breath.
In 2008 I was in Phoenix at the track and we have a vender who got us within 20' of the take off. It's not noise it's displacement of air in a violent way. That pressure wave goes right through your soul. What a rush.
I remember the first time I heard one from in the pits in Florida where my BIL was racing. I was not expecting it - I literally thought a bomb went off LOL. I couldn’t believe it. And also what is amazing is that the exhaust is like tear gas - and that was like 15 years ago - I need to go again.
It's true, you can't describe a top fuel experience. Not in words. It has to be experienced in person. The sound and the vibration of sizmik ground movement shock waves that is produced is nothing like anything else on earth
Amazing those engines 10,000 to 12,000 horsepower, hold together. It's literally 8 bombs making one big bomb. The vibration jars your life force to the core.
After being to one of these and knowing what to expect... it's more fun sometimes to watch in the stands and see the rookies that have NO CLUE what they're about to feel when they hit the throttle to go down the track... like seeing a cat jump 3 feet in the air after being startled 🤣🤣
You have to be there. It’s a bucket list I been going since i was 6. I’m 49 now you have to go to a drag meet. Nothing like it how the power is put to the ground you feel it right though you.

When you think about how much potential energy is being released in such a short time, it's just a continuous huge explosion. Slamming the driver back in his seat at 5 gees. No other land based vehicle can do that. If you haven't seen top fuel you need to put it on your bucket list there is nothing like.
I recall my first time seeing/hearing these top fuel dragsters and funny cars at the Winter Nationals in Orange County, California about 20 years ago. Very loud and my chest felt like it got punched. "Big Daddy" Don Garlits was there both racing and giving autographs. It was very exciting.
I just couldn't fathom what being in one of these cars with 10000 hp. Most brutal car ive been in had 620 hp and it was utterly of its chops. You may as well be launched directly out of a cannon at this point.
You can hear the bestial acceleration by the dopler effect, incoming really reving up fast sound(compressing) and once it passes the dopler frequency reverts and start to slow down(wider), amazing!
I remember I got to stand where Steve is at Maple Grove Raceway when I was helping out as a Universal Technical Institute student. I got to spray water on the track and do other things. Coolest experience I ever had but man did I have a mind blowing head ache the next day.
Aside from the sheer over-pressure you experience inside of anywhere like 100m of the track, there is nothing like being directly adjacent to one of those motors blowing and having hot engine parts hit the ground near you. (A bit jealous, a guy next to me picked up a valve head). Edit: Something I haven't seen here in the comments is the smell! There is nothing else like it on the planet! When you think about how much potential energy is being released in such a short time, it's just a continuous huge explosion. Slamming the driver back in his seat at 5 gees. No other land based vehicle can do that. If you haven't seen top fuel you need to put it on your bucket list there is nothing like.
GREATEST SHOW ON THE PLANET!!!
And I thought that fighter jets on afterburner was loud. Watching this I knew nothing.
waited all day for the moment of launch and this guy walks right in front of us to talk to us something stupid????? thanks a lot!!! J/A!
You can hear the bestial acceleration by the dopler effect, incoming really reving up fast sound(compressing) and once it passes the dopler frequency reverts and start to slow down(wider), amazing!
I mean let's face it
there basically launching rocket's🚀 on that starting line!
this must feel amazing... its shocking ((no pun intended)) how powerful they are enough to.. PRODUCE A SHOCKWAVE!!...
On my bucket list for the next US trip. 😎
It really is this much fun, a must feel in person, must be top fuel dragster or funny car. AWESOME !!!
Frickin awesome. Never been to one of these races yet..
I was happy to see a lot of clips from pbir raceway from Florida.
Is there any one that can tell me what brand or what the text says on the side of the cap at 3:10 ?
Love everything about drag racing
There’s no feeling like having your chest feel like it’s going to explode from the inside lol
I remember I got to stand where Steve is at Maple Grove Raceway when I was helping out as a Universal Technical Institute student. I got to spray water on the track and do other things. Coolest experience I ever had but man did I have a mind blowing head ache the next day.
On 3.20 the man is not ready
Aside from the sheer over-pressure you experience inside of anywhere like 100m of the track, there is nothing like being directly adjacent to one of those motors blowing and having hot engine parts hit the ground near you. (A bit jealous, a guy next to me picked up a valve head).
Edit: Something I haven't seen here in the comments is the smell! There is nothing else like it on the planet!
My eyes water, my nose tries to go on strike, I wish I could afford to actually work with these machines.
Nothing in the world like nitro tears.
And just think, it all started with the 1951 Chrysler New Yorker engine. (Garlits ). And then the 1957 392 wow !
