w6: Where Pistons Finally Get Cursed

- Insanely dedicated and incredible puzzle designer who has works I've previously played, now has released (the first?) standalone game on steam, a game about temperature equalization. World 6 finally shows all the ways pistons became cursed. Oh also World 7 teaser.

When the pistons get so retracted they turn into negative blocks

one of the recs on the right is pretty fitting for this video: "cursed units 2: curseder units".
Ah yes the uno flip thumbnail
Me at the end of every episode be like:
surely this won't get any more cursed??

Can we just talk about the fact that the developer not only had to think about every tiny edgecase and possibility, but also had to program it?
Playing this game requires a lot of brain power, but developing it… are we *sure* Einstein died?
As someone with a bit of game dev experience, I don’t think programming it would be _that_ hard, but for sure designing the puzzles seems mind-boggling
@@redpepper74idk man, coding some of these mechanics in a way that's inter-compatible like this is gonna at the very least be EXTREMELY time consuming
einstein is canonically a puzzle game designer
@@zackbuildit88 I can imagine that a turn is divided into as many logical “ticks” as the game needs to get to a steady state, and then each tick is split into several passes (checking for heat dissipation adjacencies, for piston moves, etc). I think checking for the different kinds of block borders might be time consuming, and defining interactions between, say, sticky blocks, static blocks, and pistons would make it more complex.
We can see in the dev discord where people crashing the game by putting green piston in another piston then prssing reset
So i think i understood how the piston block works. It has 2 parts: the box, and the head. The head can either be inside the box, making space for 1 block inside the piston, or on the edge of it, pushing blocks out of itself. And i suppose the dev wanted it to be a gas/liquid based piston because if you apply heat to it the gas/liquid expands and creates more pressure, which is alsk the reason why the piston generates heat when you push blocks into it when it is in its extended state, simulating gas compression, basically less volume = more pressure, more pressure = more temperature. I am guessing pulling blocks from it cools the piston, which can be checked in level 6-6 (edit: or not, you'd need the piston to be stationary for you to push the hook out of the piston, and also you would need to already have it pushed into the piston)
As for thermodynamics of it, it still kinda weirds me out, i am not sure if the block gives temperature to the box when it's inside, or to the head. Also you can see the head of the piston is different across different levels, sometimes its sticky, sometimes its nonconductive. And that's about it.
Man, it's hard to explain without illustrating
Edit 2: just hit the 45 minutes mark, yeah, looks like the head is the conductive part of the piston
Edit 3: forgot to mention that it seems to have a limit of blocks it can push from the heat it gets after compression, because in level 6-19 you can see it not pushing the 4 blocks back, but in level 6-12 it pushed 2 blocks and the demon back, so i'd guess the limit is like 3 or 4 blocks? Correction: probably 4 because of lvl 6-7, unless glass doesn't have "mass" which would allow the piston to push unlimited amount of glass and explain why it can't push 4 blocks on level 6-19
Edit 4: i am confused why it does not push you out after you, the demon explicitly, push the head inside the piston. (Still on lvl 6-19)
Edit 5: if 3rd edit's correction about mass is correct, it would dismiss edit 4's confusion because the piston is made of glass in level 6-19.
Edit 6: nvm, heat generated in lvl 6-19 dissipates before the piston activates because the piston is made of glass
In level 6-19 the piston doesn't push back the blocks because it is made of glass so it doesn't retain the heat when the head is pushed in
@@adrryl5566hm, so it seems glasses' heat dissipation is checked before the piston's activation
It can push 4 blocks back, it has no limit.
It has an arrow, if it points out, it's extended, and can only contract, if it points in it's contracted, and can only expand. So arrow in + cold does nothing, and arrow out + hot does nothing.
If the surface of the piston block is conducted, it can conduct to the block inside, and is the only side that connects.
I would love if you said what are the doubts you have so I can explain them, the piston seems fascinating to me.@@kengored_alt
@@adrryl5566I don't think that's correct, could you provide a time frame?
@@daviustariksson5682 right, i forgot to explain the obvious, since i was trying to make a full description of the piston even the basics must be written, ty (this is geniune, no sarcasm)
Was waiting for a piston in a piston, I was sure it was gonna happen at some point... maybe in a later world?
bruh is that you eve?
by your comments i can assume that both of you are under 10 years old
@@vita7632 what? No. This is just how typical 'cursed' puzzle games go, I was half expecting it lol. and the other guy- who I assume is Mattt- seems to think of me as... someone he knows and isn't expecting in a lot of places? I just try and ignore him tbh
Also, why was this reply necessary?

This game is just like lockpick. I don't understand anything
icely people are forgetting to like tell them to hit that subscribe button and smash that like button
i notice that the win is blue (cold) and when you die it turns gray (neutral)
i wonder if theres gonna be a red win
undead player
I think it should be like this
blue = win
gray = some player/s die
red = all players die (lose)
2 win conditions would be too OP
It's red when you can enter the level
I have been waiting for 24:10 for like 100 years... can't believe you just completely missed it
What is “it”??
Come on most of the varying piston behaviour is clearly shown to the player.
The 'head' of the piston is either in, at the back wall of the piston, or out, at the front entrance of the piston; that head has a wall type like any other block, connecting it to other things accordingly (I think we've only seen insulated and conductive, not sticky)
Not visibly obvious: The internal side walls of the piston are insulated.
yeah, basically all the mechanics are completely visible from the word go

Why do I have a feeling that pistons are going to get more cursed?
Piston went pistoff
9:28 GHOST TRICK REFERENCE!
imagine world 7 has the block actually stick to the player
These levels would be much easier if double players dissipate, like [no temperature]ly first thought

22:05 why doesnt this work
Bruh
two colds vs two hots make neutral
Because the Piston is not insulated from its insides in that level, which you can tell, because its "head" when expanded is not insulated. The properties of a pistons insides seem to match those of its "head"
@@bluestrawberry679It only connects and matters on the head, and when it's inside, the bottom inside wall IS the head.
should be push left then push down
Why some levels have only one number like "8" but others have "6-12"???
The single number is the actual "location" of the level. When you exit the level, that's where you will exit. Including if you are already inside another level.
The two number levels are "links". 6-12 will take you to "world 6, level 12", no matter where that is in relation to your current position/level stack, and when you exit, you will exit at level "12" in world 6.
They’re like the shortcuts on your computer-they point to the actual location of the file
@@kitlith does that mean that in future levels they will use levels from other worlds?

I had this idea in the shower
Last video I thought there would be a world 0 joke with the hub.
Today I looked up on the achievements on steam on world 0 exists (good luck icely only 6.7# were able to beat it). (Sorry if I spoiled a joke).
18:23 Am I stupid or is he? Don't you just switch glass blocks, sacrifice the non-level one next to get blue out, and then glue the 8 block to the piston?
Edit: oh he figured it out
23:18 How many minutes is he going to spend trying to solve this when he solved it immediately. You don't need to piston the win, you can just push it.
Amen
7:20 ayo?
Edit: 14:04
26:02 Probably because you actually went in and in?
if you enter and exit 12 from below can’t you just push the block in from above
oh wait no it will get stuck to the side of the gap
saw that too and thought "hey, just push the grey block down no need to use the piston" ... then i saw the sticky walls haha
2:09 hide and seek
More like piss tons
somewhat disappointed that you weren't very attentive when it comes to how the pistons look. it's been foreshadowed this whole time that pistons could do all these cursed things by the black line that shows up on every piston before, the same black line as insulation- this game is very consistent with the language of borders
