I've just found out Parky has passed away, I'm in shock and saddened that this Gentleman of British Television has left us. I spent most of my childhood, teen years and early adulthood watching this lovely man cast his magic and light around us. RIP Parky, truly you will be missed Sir.

Yep, I was born in 1961, so it was similar for me. He was big in Australia and did a series or two here (and, of course, this special). Parkinson was a great show for the family to watch together and I have many fond memories of laughing loudly at the Billy Connolly and Dame Edna shows. I was a film buff from 10 and so I also loved the shows with the Hollywood legends too. RIP Parky.

for me the very best "talk show host" ever.
So be "read up" - so well prepared!!
    So positively engaged.
So relaxed, so mentally present for those he met.
And his ability to be constructive, creative and completely trustworthy at all times!! surprised (and perhaps not always forewarned, but still - his human factor made everything very easy!) at what "emerged" from his interviewees (a bit rudely - from his guests - who, despite everything, were the most important!).
And - most importantly! - he was NOT tempted to take the main role.

Because anyone with a smartphone and RUclips access can be a "journalist" or "talk show host" and as many seem to do it for their fame, rather than an interest in OTHER people, interviewers such as Parkinson and Dick Cavett (whom I consider his American counterpart) are harder to find. There are some who can ask a question, then sit back and listen to the answer, formulating their next question from what's just been said to them, rather than from the list in their lap, NOT missing a scoop or great story because they WEREN'T rudely staring at that list as their guest dropped a bombshell, but they are few and far between. We were spoiled and we didn't know it.
Interviewing is an art. It doesn't just "happen", because you're a good talker. They're the worst interviewers, more interested in the sound of their own voices than their subjects! I'm probably rambling, but that's because I just saw another "interviewer" ask a question (with opinion included) then let the guest get a few sentences out, before interjecting (or rather, talking over till guest shut up) with an anecdote about herself, about how the guest's film reminded them about that time in their life when....

I always watched Michael Parkinson’s on a Saturday night in the uk. Had fabulous guest on. I remember Bill’s first time. Rod Hull & Emu. Bett Davis , when she was allowed to smoke. So many over the years.

Kathy Holland makes sense as many Aussies’ ancestry is there (though mine is predominantly Scandinavian and Germany with a smattering of Ireland and England, which I’m glad for! I love your country and can’t wait to visit again. Glad you liked the video!

Have not ever met a fellow Aussie that didn't adore Parky. Even as kid, loved his style. His biggest asset was to ask a question that demanded a 5 minute response. (Not counting Meg Ryan)
