DIY 14 Segment LED Display

This is a video about making a homemade 14 Segment LED Display from an RGB LED strip and a picture frame. The display can be controlled with a custom made app that's wirelessly connected through bluetooth. For cutting out the pieces I've used my homemade CNC machine but could also use cardboard and cut it out yourself. Components that I've used are:
- Arduino (Nano)
- Bluetooth module: HC-05
- LED strip: WS2812B 1 meter 30 RGB LED's (14 LED's used)
- Picture frame

This is cool too. I had to look up how those LED's work, I thought they must be individually addressable, but it's just their position in the chain (of course you already knew that). I like how the shelf paper stuff hides the unlit segments, you can't see they are there at all until they get lit up.

They work a little bit like a shift register, only the bytes don't shift. When an LED gets told what color to display, it blocks that message from being sent on. After it has its color, it basically just turns into a repeater and passes all pixel data it receives from then on on to the next LED. The next does the same, and so on. All until the reset number is sent, which is sent all the way down and starts over again.
The LED's have no idea how many LED's are in a chain, and will simply hand off extra LED information to nothing(it gets discarded). I love how simple but effective these guys are, and really intuitive once you learn how they work.
Since every LED is a repeater, you can get away with ENORMOUSLY long strings of LED's with absolutely no signal degradation at the end of the chain.
