"Why put criminals, rapists and murderers, in jail? They don't do anything good there, eh?"
We have here one of the pillars of the imperial army. It has been specified several times that he is an excellent strategist, responsible for the deaths of countless people. And that if he is released, it will probably be impossible to recapture him because the improbable situation which allowed his capture (and which cost a large number of lives) will not recur.
And ... "If we freed him, in exchange for a few thousand lives? Look, I'll give you light points!"
Seeing that the only logical, ethical and moral reaction was a "dark" choice left me speechless.

@@Konmael The dark side is probably due to fact that releasing him denies Saresh the possibility to recover thousands of Republic prisoners. Who knows, perhaps great scientist or special agents are in there too.

Save thousands while the entire galaxy, and let millions, billions, hell possibly even trillions burn away, quietly going into the night. This feels nothing more than a cheap political move.
Yes, it is sad and unfortunate that thousands of prisoners will likely be killed or worse, but there is always the chance they might be recovered later.

depending on how you look at it, they actually got the idea right
dark side isnt "bad" its just emotional, prideful, principled, potentially destructive and selfish but grounded and powerful
dark-siders arent always mean and dont always refuse to help people, theyre more generally against wanton charity and generosity, believing it weakens people to be taken advantage of or grow complacent
you dont do much good helping someone so much that they cant function without you
just like light-side isnt always "good" cause its also detached, 'above' the world, submitting to the will of the force and the universe above your own goals, whimsical and while yes light-siders do think immediately of the most help and generosity they can perform to those around them they dont think of the consequences of allowing themselves to be a crutch to be leaned on

he didnt kill trench for the sake of killing, but killing trench was definitely an emotionally driven response to the problem he presented

A bastard who thinks only of war and combat. Killing enemies and being praised for it makes him feel important !
A "nice" who does her duty in all circumstances.
What is completely paradoxical is that :
    - the bastard chose to release him (It was a selfish choice. We don't care about the few thousand people released! What matters is that an officer, an excellent strategist, is released. Because that can only cause more war)
    - the good one chose not to release him (thus saving millions, at the cost of life of a few thousand)

Well she did mention reading havoc squadron's file, this being darling soldier, there is loads to be scared of. Also it would be a really difficult for saresh if the situation would come to light which it would "accidentally" leaked by someone "entirely" unrelated to general Garza
Finally she wouldn't want a repeat with what happened to the first Havoc squad and so would not put such a wedge between herself and the squad

When was the last time you ever heard the Sith keep Imperial officers alive after learning they failed at some vital task? In this case, holding down a key fort needed to hold the planet Corellia.

In a practical situation, I'd use Rakton as part of a bargaining chip as a means of getting a ceasefire set up. Hand over a couple resource worlds under stipulations of conduct towards the populace, and organize an exchange of war criminals from both sides. Sith war criminals get sent to the republic for appropriate punishment, republic war criminals get sent over to the Sith, stuff like that.
SWTOR boils down the morality system WAY too thin, to the point where it's written to be downright insulting to anyone who wants to contemplate in-universe consequences. That, among other reasons, is why I dropped that game. It also runs like molasses on any of my systems, and add that to the pay-to-progress system they have for the game.

Saresh: "Think of the countless families reunited--thousand of husbands and wives, parents and children, all brought home at last."
What she meant: "Think of the countless votes from their families--thousand of husbands and wives, parents and especially children, all will be grateful to me. I could maintain my power as supreme chancellor for decades."

I disagree with the majority opinion. The Empire will always find new generals, and the fact that this one lost just shows that hes not as great as hes made out to be.
Trading him saves lives, keeping him just makes him get replaced with someone else and the war goes on. Sure, maybe if another general is in charge we win a battle we would have lost against Rakton. But maybe one of the people that gets released cause us to win a battle we would have lost without them. Its all maybes, and I think the sure path to save lives is the right one.
