    Glory Lily is a very serious weed of near-coastal vegetation. It forms dense understorey carpets in coastal dune systems, competing strongly with native flora. It is regarded as one of the ten most serious invasive garden plants in Australia

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  29 дней назад

      Yes it can be and is invasive, depending on the climate. In cooler climates you will struggle to keep it alive, in warmer climates it can run away and be a real pest, especially if it gets into waterways. We should have talked about that in the video, so point well made.

      Assuming the growing tip of the tuber is not broken, plant it with the growing tip a little lower than the other end, it should still grow however may not flower the first year

    So is it essentially just one vine per tuber? You need a lot for a full effect then.

    • @johnnyAGardening

      If the tuber tip is not damaged and you plant it correctly in the right season it should show signs of growth in spring to summer depending on the climate.

    Do you think I can get away with growing this on the east coast in South Carolina zone 8b? I've read a few places that they can survive but I can't find any exact temperature that they can survive. I saw a picture of this plant at the garden part of the zoo I went to recently with my parents when I was reminded of this plant's existence but it's currently fall and it wasn't in bloom. I really want to try it out here but I don't want to unnecessarily dig it up every winter when it can do well outside.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  2 года назад +1

      8b is about the limit, so it will depend on the position. If you do not get heavy freezes AND you give it good drainage AND you are prepared to put a deep mulch over it in winter than we would give it a try..... But no guarantees.

      I live in coastal Georgia and planted 3 tubers in the ground over 20 years ago. Each year they come up in April and bloom into July. Many times when the seed pod formed after the flower bloomed I would snap it off and toss it on the ground. Maybe that explains why I now have glorious lilies in a large part of my garden. I never remove any tubers.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  2 года назад

      They need to be kept moist and warm to germinate, and can take 2 - 3 months. Soak them in warm water before sowing the seeds, only 1 - 2 cm deep (say 1/2 to 3/4 inch) Fertilise with a liquid fertiliser once a month, ALSO Let the seeds ripen before collecting.
