My take is: it's a story bout PTSD and how men came back from war told to be strong but falling apart from the experiences and the song structure plays into that, chaotic and disorganized unable to function ... as a song
As a true Canadian. We just call them “the hip” I will never forget when they showed they’re final concert ever live coast to coast for all of Canada to watch free. It was a heartbreaking, and heartwarming end to a truly great front man. Many tears were she’d that day throughout Canada.
I'm an American, but live near Buffalo. We also call them "the hip." Been a fan of the hip since the 90's. I cried during that final concert, as did my friend in western NY.
They were amazing live. I saw them at Hamilton Place, where the chairs are fixed to the floor, and one song Gord walked out into the middle of the crowd, on the backs of the chairs, singing. 😎
My biggest regret, I did not have a chance to see them live and they are a great live band. Great song and as far as I'm concerned, Gordie Downie can do what ever he likes and the fans will be right there with him, and they were. Thanks again Todd, thanks for the great review Justin.
It tells if the tragic story of our w2 veterans who took part in the Tragic Dieppe Raid which i can say i am connected to with my unit the TSR being involved in👍😉🤙
So sad Gord went way too early in life. I thought they were Australian when i first heard them. It was the time i guess. Men at work, crowded house THE Tragically Hip!! 😊
Gord, would often pontificate on whatever the song was bringing up in him in the moment and some of those pontifications were the best moments of seeing The Hip live. Having seen them many times, my favourite was still in a theatre in Syracuse, a smaller venue for them, and Gord was rolling around on the floor reenacting being Locked in the Trunk of a Car." Another great Hip song for you to do. Glad you are enjoying the rabbit hole!
If you want to see an early concert with the Hip, check out the Tragically Hip live at the Misty Moon 1990, it was filmed for broadcast on Much Music. I was in the audience that night, about 10 ft from the stage. To this day it is still one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
I saw the last tour, which was announced as the last tour, for Gord and everyone knew , that the cancer was going to take Gord within a year or two....It was at Casino Windsor/Caesars Windsor, and usually on the main floor it was only seats, but It was the only time so far that all the seats were taken out and there was a bar on the main floor as well......I think was was purposely done that way so that you could , walk right up and get close with the band....I had never seen the hip and felt that , it would be sacrilegious not to, and It was great, and Gord was so grateful, for us being there.....R.I.P. Gord
If you are lucky to see them live, sometimes you get a poetry slam in the centre of a song. It doesnt need to make any sense at all, but you cant look away🇨🇦❤️
Great reaction vids - honestly I am biased (being CDN) but The Tragically Hip is to me one of the Top 5 bands ever. They had diverse music and a live stage presence that is hard to even measure. It makes me think of the same type of stage presence that the Stones had in the 70s. HIP ON TOP
1. Everyone just called/calls them the Hip. 2. Yes, exactly. You have already explained the essential, musical core of the Hip just about as well as anybody who has been listening to them for decades. 3. Yup, that's why I've only chosen three live performances thus far, just enough to give you a feel for the unique character of this band (ie of Gord Downie) as a live enterprise. 4. Otherwise, I'd always advise listening to the studio version first before seeing what Gord did with it when the song returned to the place it was likely conceived, the stage. PS - That's why you haven't seen a request for you to react to New Orleans is Sinking, their first big hit, yet. I have an idea that it deserves to be part of a "Good Cover Bad Cover" segment, with the studio version put up against the Hip's 'Killer Whale Tank' live performance version!
Gord was the ultimate front man. I don’t know who thinks he’s not a great singer live. The band’s live performances were so much more intense than the studio recordings, in large part because of Gord’s style.
One way in which you and Gord Downie would have been simpatico was on the subject of lyrics... because he frequently changed and/or added them when performing live.
The studio version of this song is probably my favourite Hip song.
100%
Absolutely not! I saw them play this song live in 90's in a mosh pit sweating blood n' sweat
That's strange
Gord’s live rants were legendary.
My take is: it's a story bout PTSD and how men came back from war told to be strong but falling apart from the experiences and the song structure plays into that, chaotic and disorganized unable to function ... as a song
Through your channel and the requests has introduced me to these guys and They Might Be Giants. Both great bands that I am digging more into. Thanks

One of the greatest Canadian songs ever written
"There's no other Gord Downie" RIP.
I mean....what a fucking amazing entire band???
Gord Live was a Crazy person...poetic and powerful
It's at least in part about the Dieppe Raid
They were amazing live. I saw them at Hamilton Place, where the chairs are fixed to the floor, and one song Gord walked out into the middle of the crowd, on the backs of the chairs, singing. 😎
Having a great binge watch here. It's great seeing the best of the Hip. Thanks Todd.
Definitely Michael Stipe vibes 👌
Stream of conciousness rants he goes into are legendary.
Look up dieppe

This song is about the Battle of Dieppe…look it up sometime.
Gords riffing made every show different and fresh.
It tells if the tragic story of our w2 veterans who took part in the Tragic Dieppe Raid which i can say i am connected to with my unit the TSR being involved in👍😉🤙
*RIP Gord* 😌🙏
This is one of their best shows.
I own a DVD.
It's a weekend Ritual when i'm at the cottage!!!!!
Gord was special , amazing band cohesion
Great to notice it's one of those rare songs with NO CHORUS! lol
There is no other Gord Downie…….exactly.
Gord often test drove future songs in the bridges of live songs. His rants were legendary.
My favourite Hip song!
So sad Gord went way too early in life. I thought they were Australian when i first heard them. It was the time i guess. Men at work, crowded house THE Tragically Hip!! 😊
Late to this reaction, the Hip are the bomb...RIP to Gord.
p.s. my fake name (I often use for ordering pizza) is Geddy Downie

The Hip is fine to express their name.
Baker's a riff master, amazing guitar tone. RIP Gord
You're right... Gord is The HIP
EPIC
Finally someone doing the hip seen them on this tour Darien NY
There’s no Hip without Gord.
The only drummer that could try to potentially fill Neil's shoes is maybe Mike Portnoy but you are right about Gord, he can't be replaced.

HIP ON TOP
Gord can sing exactly on key ...wheat kings for example
You can say the hip or tragically hip … we 🇨🇦 say the hip
Yeeaaa baby!
The HIP
1. Everyone just called/calls them the Hip.

I mean Bruce Springsteen doesn't have the greatest live singing voice either. But gord's voice is just fine and his scatting was legendary
You have to listen to the studio version to appreciate more...personally one of my fav Hip songs...also the video is pretty good too

God watching them live was always spectacular
You ain’t wrong dude … he was off the rails riffing sideways from the original tune … almost like he was on acid or something
The Hip…..
Gord was definitely creative and entertaining to watch.
It's called Gords "live rants"...
I hate to say this but only Canadians can get it.
Exactly! There's no hook. I waited and waited and the song just meandered along.
This is the best Hip song but you have to listen to the studio version.
Their vocal harmonies are unusually difficult to sing. 🍁🔥🇨🇦
Dueling Gords
Gord just kinda adds rants into otherwise instrumental sections of songs. What you were hearing at the end was just adlib ranting.
One way in which you and Gord Downie would have been simpatico was on the subject of lyrics... because he frequently changed and/or added them when performing live.
"Gord rants" are not part of the lyrics. 😊
