Imagine if Phil was alive now, with only classic rock bands from the 70’s playing two crowds for $500 bucks a seat. Thin Lizzy would be packing arenas making million’s.

I think a Thin Lizzy reunion at Wembley Stadium would've had a huge resurgence with them, especially with a world wide audience. Along with the other reunions that day like Zeppelin, Sabbath, and The Who.

Bob Geldof did heroin with Phil and continued on for years. His own daughter died of an overdose from that drug. Live Aid made him and Midge very rich men. Geldof gave the excuse that Lizzy didnt have massive worldwide appeal to be at Live Aid. The fact that Geldof was regarded as a world hero and was knighted makes me sick. Midge Ure acts like a clown and a goofball but he's mostly Bu$ine$$ too. Its all an act. This deeply deeply hurt Phil. Im sure if he was invited months prior he would have shaped up and got serious about resurging his music and personal life. Im 99% sure he would have stayed alive.
He died very young (36) and there was still a lot of great music left in him 😢

Anyone who has seen the documentary on Thin Lizzy knows in mid 1985 Phil Lynott was sadly in no shape to play a massive gig like Live Aid though personally I have always thought they missed a trick not having Motorhead who were one of the best live bands ever and one of the few bands who could play punk festivals and rock festivals with equal aplomb and I even saw Lemmy with The Damned for a birthday party gig. Jan 4th but I’m sure that was just an oversight. If we are talking about underrated Brian Downey great great drummer so no surprise my favourite Thin Lizzy albums are Jailbreak, Downey on Emerald, and Vagabonds of the Western World for The Rocker and Bad Reputation as some great drum breaks on that album.

Shmackofagoob ! I'm Gumby Dammit !! I'm not really but like to believe I be ? Anyway back in early 1986 I was reading Rolling Stone magazine (when it meant something and not the shit rag it is today) and read a piece about Phil Lynott dying in a hospital in Ireland I could probably be heard screaming NO !!! from about three blocks away from my dining room as I just realized my favorite band Thin Lizzy was no more and not even a chance to get back together at some point in time. Boomtown Rats ? Where never on my radar then and still not. Anyone talking about Boomtown Rats today and doing revival tours or tribute bands ? Hell No !! They've been long forgotten about ! Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy made such a mark in music history that people just can't let that go. I sure can't and love seeing the memory of Phil kept alive and immortalized. Love all the albums Thin Lizzy made with Live & Dangerous being my all time favorite live album followed by Black Rose as number 1 for their studio efforts. But your mileage my vary from mine. And to think were still talking about Phil today......Who the fuck is Bob Geldolf anyway ??!! Shsmackofagoob !!! BA BA Louie !! & Gott segne dich !! ( God Bless You for not sneezing ! ) Later !!

Love Black Rose. Fantastic album...List is just about what I would have as well. If we were not talking just studio L.P.'s I would have to have Live and Dangerous at number 2...I fell in love with Lizzy after listening to that double album. They are just so underrated , Downey was fantastic on the drums, Lynott was an a terrific singer and lyricist, Gorham was always a fantastic part of the dual guitar attack with Robertson and the legendary Gary Moore...just so much talent in one band.

look , i dont know - only guessing - but maybe bob and midge knew how bad phil was in his health ?
They would know all the insider talk about his dysfunction .
Lets not forget he was 6 mths away from dying .
So he would have been in a very bad way i imagine . Also , they were smack bang in the middle of the synth pop age -and they already had staus quo - queen - led zep - . Its not entirely fair to imply he is gone because of the oversight -or the deliberate overlooking of a band that was not even together ,! Indeed scott Gorham was also struggling .

I only got to see Thin Lizzy once, on the Chinatown tour, in December 1980. They were good that night, but not great. Scott Gorham sat on a stool because his leg was in a full cast. Snowy White was the other guitarist. Brian Downey on drums was very good. Phil was Phil. My friends and I were maybe 10-15 feet from the stage, right in front of Phil.
New England was the opening band. They were on fire that night!

Live Aid brought USA act "George Thorogood & The Destroyers" and their song "Bad To The Bone" to the rest of the world. They, and that song, were already classic in USA, but apparently mostly unknown elsewhere, until their Live Aid performance. And, they were only a 'stand by' act. Someone couldn't play, George Thorogood & The Destroyers were standing by, and stepped up! (So just imagine what USA & Global markets could've been opened up, or edified for Thin Lizzy, had they played Live Aid).

Alternatively, Would Phil have died, if he had been invited and played Live Aid? I'm sure it would have felt like a huge kick in the b##lls and certainly wouldn't have enhanced his self esteem/worth, adding to his addictions and Downward spiral.

I don't know what the reasons were behind Phil not playing but I'm sure it was more than just Bob not inviting him just to snub him. Maybe Phil was quite the mess if he was near his end. Boomtown Rats were not a bad band lol. I don't like Bob Geldof either tho, I think he's a terrible person.

Bob Geldof is the one Responsible for putting on the show and it wasn't his fault Phil become a Heroin addict and ruined his life . He wasnt asked to play because he wasn't capable .

Great talent Phil, you’re right there are no bad Lizzy records… it’s hard for me to blame Geldoff for not inviting Phil. As you said he was an all-out junkie by then, and that’s hard on everyone in that person’s circle. Fcuk opiods

Ure and Geldoff betrayed Phil when Phil needed them most. They had very short memories after all the favours Phil did for them. Disgusting, as Lizzy would have been awesome at Live Aid.

@@jayrum7303 What nonsense are you on about. The Boomtown Rats had 9 top twenty UK hits of which 2 of them "Rat Trap" and "I Dont Like Mondays". reached No.1 in the UK. The latter was also a global top 10 ten. Some people put them as a Punk band while others consider them New Wave. In the UK the track "Rat Trap" is considered the first No.1 by a New Wave band. They were not my cup of tea.

By 1985 nobody cared about Thin Lizzy and hadn't done for years. Their popularity started to drop after Black Rose and just two years later they failed to even make the Top 30 with Renegade. Phil then got desperate and came up with the idea of a 'farewell' tour for publicity. The idea was that there would be such a public clamour against them splitting up that they would bow to this pressure and carry on. The plans were rumbled and he had to go ahead with the split.
I saw Thin Lizzy live on three occasions. I had been led to believe that they were a great live band but, in my experience, they were never more than mediocre live. Phil's arrogance may have played a part in this, he eemed to think that he could get away with the same old schtick perpetually. Certainly they would not have made a massive impact at Live Aid, and absolutely would not have challenged Queen or U2 as the biggest winners of the day.
