Laughing Dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) Coo & Bird Call Video - Olifants Rest Camp
The Laughing Dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) is one of the most beautiful and common birds that can be found in the Kruger National Park. They have a few bird calls that they can be recognised by, and you can often see the Laughing Dove on the tar and dirt roads, waiting to the last minute (Or until you stop for a photograph), to fly off. The Laughing Dove are often found in pairs, and can also generally nee seen in all the Kruger National Park rest camps and at all the Kruger National Park picnic spots, they are quite abundant.
The Laughing Dove is a small pigeon that is a resident breeder in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Other names include laughing turtle dove, palm dove and Senegal dove while in Asia the name little brown dove is often used. I have posted a few Laughing Dove videos, where I get comments saying "that is actually a Senegal Dove" - which as mentioned, as an example, is just another name for the Laughing Dove.
The Laughing Dove is very photogenic and often tame in the camps, such as the Laughing Doves in this bird call video, which was taken in Olifants Rest Camp. In the background you can hear the more common bird call of the Laughing Dove.
The Laughing Dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) is a small, graceful bird commonly found in the Kruger National Park and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. Here are some key details about this bird species:
    Identification
Size and Appearance: The Laughing Dove is about 25 cm (10 inches) in length with a wingspan of approximately 45 cm (18 inches). It has a pinkish-brown body with a bluish-gray head and a distinctive patch of rufous and black on the neck, which gives it a scaly appearance.
Plumage: The underparts are pinkish, while the wings have a combination of browns, blacks, and blues. The tail is long and graduated with white corners visible during flight.
    Behaviour and Ecology
Diet: Laughing Doves primarily feed on seeds, grains, and small insects. They often forage on the ground in pairs or small groups.
Call: Their call is a distinctive, low, musical "coo" which sounds like human laughter, hence the name "Laughing Dove."
Breeding: They breed year-round in warm climates, with a peak in the breeding season during the rainy season. The nest is a flimsy platform of twigs, usually built in trees or shrubs. They typically lay two white eggs.
Habitat: These doves are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats including woodlands, savannahs, and urban areas.
    Distribution
Range: The Laughing Dove has a wide range across Africa and extends into the Middle East and South Asia. In South Africa, it is a common resident and can be seen in many regions, including the Kruger National Park.
    Conservation Status
IUCN Status: The Laughing Dove is listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to its wide distribution and large, stable population.
    Importance in Kruger National Park
Ecological Role: In the Kruger National Park, Laughing Doves play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control insect populations and disperse seeds, contributing to the park's biodiversity.
Visitor Attraction: Their pleasant call and approachable nature make them a favourite among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts visiting the park.
Overall, the Laughing Dove is a delightful and important resident of the Kruger National Park, adding to the park's rich avian diversity and ecological complexity.
