  • It's unbelievable that this used to be a highway in Iceland but the road was used from 1966-1991 or until we got new road tunnels trough the northernmost part of the mountain. I had wanted to do this video for some time because I used to drive this road, and I wanted to know the status of it, like if it's possible to hike up to a wonderful viewing spot by the north end where we getI know fantastic view to north. west and east.
    And like you see, it's still possible to hike up there but only from Dalvik, the Eyjafjörður side or from where the video starts.
    It turned out to be a bit foggy, so I picked some relaxing music to go with the fog since it was a beautiful day and the fog was suitable background for this flyover. The mountain is called Ólafsfjarðarmúli and the elevation of the road is 230 meters above sea level.

    Fallegt og óttavekjandi á sama andartaki. Man að mamma hallaði sér alltaf inn í bílinn þegar pabbi var að keyra, til að sjá ekki niður hamarinn. Skildi hana betur þegar ég varð eldri💕 Tónlistin dásamleg. Takk ☺

      Takk Heiða, ég fékk snjóflóð nokkra metra framan við bílinn í einni ferðinni en nálægur ýtukall sagði, iss þetta er ekkert, ég skutla þessu frá og drífðu þig í gegn, og ég lét mig hafa það einhvernveginn :)

    Looks like that old road must have needed quite a bit of upkeep in its day, judging by all the landslides; building that tunnel was just a smart (and more economical?) thing to do.

    • @JustIcelandic
      @JustIcelandic  2 года назад +10

      Yes it was never a good road and the upkeep cost was a money pit, but the tunnels were only single span and a trouble today for that reason :) New tunnels are needed :)

    Great video. You capture the vibrant colors of Iceland. You could make a new spectrum of colors from Iceland. Every where I go I wish every one could see your videos. Today we spent most of the day at the National museum of Iceland. We learned a lot of the early history of Iceland. Tomorrow we go on the walking tour and flee market. Then just wander around to just to see what is new. Every year Iceland changes so much. New construction every where. Road work and always better ways to get around. I remember being at the town at the end of the road after the tunnel. What I remember was the structure that the built to protect the town from avalanches. I could not figure what it was until I read the sign that explained the structure and how it worked. You have a great selection of music to go with your videos. I will be in Akureyri from Aug. 7 to 12. If you are near I will go to where ever to meet you. I would love to hear you stories about Iceland. I look forward to all you videos and stories. When we get back I will watch your videos and that will help in planning our next trip to Iceland. Thank you Linda and Ben and have a great day.

    PS - in SoCal, the Ridge Route (Castaic-Tejon Route), a 1910 era highway between Los Angeles County and Kern County, California was abandoned in late 1960s when the modern I-5 freeway was built. Parts are still passible but as time goes on more sections are impassible.

    I have wondered about this road for years. Like: who built it? Did it follow old paths that people used to use through there, or was the road built in the early 60's and it was just a new road?
    I would have been terrified to travel on it, especially if oncoming traffic were a thing to worry about. The new tunnels make sense. This remains a partially usable hiking trail, I hope it remain that way for a few more decades.
