Good morning every one. As I uploaded this video I realized that this was my 150th video 🎉 With my friends all double vaxed we are talking again about getting together to sew . I have several weekends planned for the fall, so it's time to get my travel bag ready to go. I hope you will be inspired to plan a small retreat again. Crazy but I have a Retreat bag as well as my everyday kit. I find that this works best for me too. I really like the idea of a second cheaper bag on wheels and will look for the next big Michael’s sale
I would like to share one tip. I cannot remember where I was when I saw this, but it was fantastic. On the back of your cutting mat write out a check list of all your items. When you start to pack up at the end of the event, flip your mat and place each item on it. Do not pack the things away until everything is on the mat. You can also outline larger items like is done on peg board so you know at a glance what is missing. I too use the scrapbook totes for individual projects. It makes it easy to grab and go, knowing everything for that project is in one place.
I know this is not part of actual sewing kit but do not forget comfy outfits that still fit. After all our time behind closed doors clothes may be a bit snug now. Nothing worse than sitting down to sew and fabric digs into waist or tight across thighs. Try on before you pack. Thanks again for your videos. I always learn new things.
I always bring a cotton padded placemat to set my machine on. It helps deaden sound, but also allows me to push the Machine back if I need a little more space in front of the machine for some task.
What a fantastic idea! I do this at home, and always forget to take one with me when I travel. And I have a few odd-ball placemats that could just "live" in my machine's travel case.
Rotary blade sharpener???? I had no idea such a thing existed!! How cool!!! . My search online yielded a huge disparity of opinions and reviews (manual vs electric). Have you discussed this in another video? I would LOVE you to hear your opinion on how to select one.
This video was perfect timing - my husband has a conference next week and I'll be sewing while he's in meetings. You've just done all my thinking and planning for me! Thank you so much. Love the tips and tricks you provide. You are part of my quilting sisterhood.
The other thing I do when I travel with quilting/sewing tools. At home, as I "fill" my assorted small zippered pouches with the items that belong in each (one for cutting tools, one for marking tools, etc.), I photograph the pouch and contents on my phone. Then, as I'm gathering my items to leave the venue, I check each pouch against the photos I have saved in my phone. My next quilting retreat is three states away (with my two sisters who don't live local -- yay!), and I'll be flying in/out. That means I have to pack all my tools, fabrics, etc. into a box and FedEx it to the hotel a week or so before the retreat, then send it home afterwards. Why? Because I like to travel with only a roll-aboard suitcase, and I can't take any of the sharp implements into the plane cabin. Luckily, I won't need my sewing machine, as they're providing new Berninas.
Just a few additions to your packing list … I always bring unscented hand cream and lip balm, readers, and now sanitizing wipes. I put my pedal and cord in a quilted bag under the wheel, inside the machine throat goes my combo thread catcher and pin cushion made from a fancy soap box, and snug on the needle side is a pouch of notions, tools, scissors, rotary cutters etc … all three of these items are from the same fabric as my oversized tote for cutting boards, small design boards etc which makes them easier to identify as mine and less likely to be left behind. Making padded I.D. wraps for EVERY bag you bring is a helpful/fun project and nice little gift to give fellow ‘getawayers’ (Mary Mulari has a pattern/tutorial). Thank you SEW much for your service to the quilting community, Karen.
We are sew sisters for sure. I always have several projects going too. I love your videos. You speak very eloquently and don't ramble. Can't get enough!
Great tips. One more: I have a typed list with all major items. This list goes in a page protector. As I pack each item is checked off. Most importantly, as I pack up to return home, each item is again checked off list. Easy peasy. Nothing forgotten and nothing left behind. Oh - the list is clipped to front of sewing trolley with its marking pen inside. BTW, I use this trick for suitcase packing/traveling as well. I never stress over forgetting anything.
Someone after my own heart. I do the same thing. As I go( or used to, at least) a lot of retreats some furnished everything and some had nothing. My check off list was quite long so I broke it down into venues. I have the lists in a Word document so I can print it out check things off to go and to bring back. so much more worry free
Great tips! I'll share one of mine... use return address labels on the items that may wander. I have them on my rulers, the back of my cutting mat, my rotary cutter, and my mini iron. Also, there are folding rulers and mats that provide the option to go bigger without needing a ton of extra packing space.
Remember to make sure you have room in your vehicle for everything! A few years back had a family vacation to NC Outerbanks. Three people in a 2012 Ford Escape with luggage for 9 days. Was looking forward to some quality sewing time, but, had to leave the sewing stuff at home as there wasn't room. Next time, we are getting a roof tote! Was very disappointed.
Going to my first sewing expo with 3 days of classes and Bring Your Own Supplies. I know of I came here you would have something about traveling with supplies. THANK YOU.
Wish I had seen this 2 days ago, before I traveled to the middle of rural Vermont for 10 days. I brought my machine, more than enough fabric to finish 2 quilts , my rulers and my cutting mat, but I forgot my rotary cutter! No fabric stores in this area, and even Amazon will take 8 days to get me a new one! Luckily I brought some knitting! I’ll print out your list and check it twice before each trip from now on!
I have been a beginner quilter for 20 years and have never been on a retreat. I say I'm a beginner because I still don't see myself as very skilled. I do it as a way to relax. I've given many quilts away and that's my enjoyment.
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts I never knew there was such a thing as quilting retreats until last year. Lol Maybe in a few years I will be able to afford the time from work and the expense to travel.
Loved these packing tips! Hubby and I volunteer for 2 weeks a month most of the year. While the guys and gals (that choose to) build at churches or camps many of us gals sew on mission projects or our own projects. It’s like being on a sewing retreat for me and hubby is happy because he likes to stay busy and learning more skills. We are traveling with a purpose” Volunteer Christian Builders.” I highly anticipate your RUclips videos and learn something helpful in each one. Love the way you stretch our knowledge in the “Circle” videos!!!! Blessings
You can take a cutting board that’s warped and put it out in sun I did this with a huge one I got at flea market for $1. And it flattened out might take more than 1day out in sun !!
Absolutely fantastic video. My husband and I just bought a new car and look forward to semi retirement and longer multi state travel trips to our grandkids. GeeMa still needs to be sewing. Thanks
I am thrilled to have seen you with the Cider line of fabric! I have made 3 table runners with a sampler of stars, using that fabric line! The 3rd runner I made I sold for $125!! My first paid project!
Hi Karen, I have made a check list of all the “don’t forget” items and I taped it to the tote that I take my smaller items in. I also put address labels on my foot pedal and items that might wander. I refer to the check list when packing up so I don’t forget anything.
i have a 1978ish Viking Husqvarna .. would not give it up ... i do have an electronic for home table top quilting ... but love my old one! an old friend has sewn a lot of memories!! love your suggestions ... you do have so many tips to share!!
I don’t store my “go bag” in the car because a friend of mine had her sewing machine warp because of heat. I tend to pack too much for retreats and not enough for my weekly sew group. I’m going to go through my stuff and narrow it down to your basics. I agree that sewing machine cords and foot pedal are the worst thing to leave behind. Because all sewing accessories are the same I label all my equipment liberally. I got home without my foot pedal and machine cord once and no one claimed responsibility for picking it up. I also lost the cover for a sewing table, although I didn’t come home without one, it was not my new one. Now I have everything tied very obviously with pink plastic measuring table and my card is taped to everything. I’ve even taken to marking my “stuff” with a dab of a distinctive nail polish that I can easily spot. I have marked my machine feet that travel as well as my rulers with this. The overpacking is probably what leads to missing objects because I believe quilters are the best people you can ever know. I appreciate all the tips and tricks you share because I’ve been ruled by the quilt police too long. Finished is better than a pile of fabric. I’m at the age where I have to just get it done. Thank you for your tips, tricks and expertise along with your sensible approach to the budgeting of items and getting the most out of what we have.
Pls protect rotary cutters by placing them inside a bag of some sort. Eye glass container, cell phone, make your own mini bag, etc. ALSO. Olfa mats can be redeemed when warped. Go to their website or vendors at shows. Good show today. Liked the tip check machine cords 3x.
I also bring manuals (I'm relatively new to sewing via scrapbooking). I don't use smartphone or tablet so hardcopy manual works great for me. An acquaintance sold me her ancient SInger serger with unreadable manual due to oil spill, so I found a replacement manual online.
After seeing women in quilt classes forget their electrical cord or foot peddle at home, I began packing my electrical cord and foot pedal in my bag FIRST and then my sewing machine. By doing my packing in this order I haven't inadvertently left them at home, or on a classroom floor.
I take photos of my items going in my bag after making sure they are all labeled with my name, and I take a photo of everything packed in my car. Then I can compare all the bags to my photo and make sure I have everything for the trip home.
Your travel sewing kit is spot on! As one who has done all three (over packed, under packed, and a narrowed down pack). I've learned what is important to take on a trip. I wish there was a list like yours when I first started going a retreats.
Karen I just watched your video ….What’s in my travel bag? All great tips that I’ll be sure to remember next time we are traveling. Have been waiting ages for the US/Canadian border to open. My 9 year old granddaughter is excited about our upcoming visit. She’s checked with me a dozen times already….”Grandma make sure you bring your Featherweight and some fabric.”……LOL
Two suggestions: My bag has a folding ruler- has been pretty sturdy. Cutting mats fit in an artist’s portfolio. I also put my sewing machine extension in it, and that keeps things stiff. They have handles. You can pad with fabric. I also made a 2x4 ft ironing board. 1/4” thick plywood, batting flannel and topped with Teflon fabric. Wonderful for ironing yardage, and can be placed on any flat surface as it has no legs. Can warp, so don’t use under a cutting mat. But I still have knees., so I’ll use the floor if I have to.
I have a master list on my phones of the essentials I need. Then I have list of what I need for each project, specialty rulers etc and package them with tat project. My friend forgot her extra fabric for a couple of her projects and that left her with one project to work on for a 4 day retreat☹️. I now have extras with me.🤓
Once on retreat a friend had to shop for another project bc the ones she brought with her each got to a point where she needed to stop! I usually pack too many projects myself.
Great work Karen. Well organised. So pleased you are getting some freedom. Enjoy whatever you are able to do. In NSW, Australia, we are in severe lockdown. Can’t travel more than 5Kms from home. Masks whenever we go outside the front door. I’m enjoying online grocery shopping though. I may never go into a grocery store again. Bill and I have had both injections and are happy at home. Lots of sewing time. 😂
I just spent a week at a workshop. I too have had a travel bag for a long time. I bought a sewing machine bag at JoAnns ( with a 60% off coupon of course) back in 2018 and it carries my sewing tools. In addition to your list I carry one of those cup holders that has a trash bag attached. I have never had to replace my original trash bag as it is only used for sewing trash. At the end of my fun I dump the thread snips and trimmed dog ears. My trash part comes off the cup holder and folds flat. The cup holder goes in my bag and that is where I store my spray bottle. I also always carry a light mine is Daylight Company Halo Table Magnifying Lamp this one is nice as you can charge while sewing and then when you are ready to relax and hand stitch it will run on batteries. Plus it folds down really small. From Amazon. My machine is in its own bag complete with a surge protector. I carry my Bernini 570 QE to classes, retreats, workshops and to fun sewing with friends. It is packed with everything you listed yep cord and foot pedal in addition I have a flat board with moleskin from Martelli that stops my foot pedal from escaping. If it a day class I can put my project in with my sewing tools. If I will there for a few days I add all the accessories I will need for each project to my sewing tools. Like for foundation paper piecing I add my add a quarter tool. Each project has its own bin in my room so I grab them make any cuts needed and go. Congratulations on 150th video. I believe I have enjoyed them all.
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts The magnifier lamp was purchased for my motor home & cross stitching, then I discovered how useful it is and well it travels with me to everything. I too used stuff I already had. My cup/trash bin that clamps onto the table edge was from my scrapbooking days. A lot of the rulers used for that are now being repurposed for quilting. I bought better tools for quilting during my teaching days so all my old tools are in my travel bag. There are only a couple of new ones like a different and safer rotary cutter that are in my travel bag. I did buy the 14”X 14” wool mat for my travel bag. I have not indulged in the Olisio travel iron. I have three travel irons already Two that can no longer do steam and one that can. I can’t really justify that purchase. The other reason I went with two totes it spreads the weight out. Do to bad hand injuries in my 20’s neither of my hands have much strength. Really enjoyed this video.
@@tamipugh3377 I also use multiple bags to spread out the weight due to bad back. When I arrive at hotel, bags are loaded onto luggage cart for easy transport to retreat room.
@@nuvoclassic I actually keep my tool rolling tote packed all the time. So I only have to grab project specific tools to add. I pack up my machine and I’m ready to go. I taught sewing classes for years so I accumulated doubles of all my favorite tools. Now that I am retired I am thankful I purchased them when I did. As I no longer live by wonderful quilt stores. I get to travel back to my home state once a year and I try to hit all 7 quilt stores while I am there. Last year I came home with like 4 new tools and 5 quilt kits and patterns. I am hoping my favorite quilt store has there week long workshop again. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and get whatever sewing tools on your list.
Great travel bag ideas. I sew 1 night a week and need to create this. Luckily my friend has an ironing and cutting station so some items I can leave behind. Great going!
And then I never touch 2/3 of what I take with me. That's why I LOVE this list. I put it into the Notes section of my iPhone and iPad, so I always have it. And I added a few small items I always like to take with me.
At a sewing retreat many years ago, I saw a woman with a magnetic pin tray in a small food container. I had the same container at home (totally useless for food as the lid is so tight that you end up spilling the food) and also a magnetic tray. Put them together and love them. Also learnt how to knit small items on a circular knitting with a large loop. Then there were the organised lessons. :-)
Thank you for sharing your packed bag. And I too, love my 910. This video really helps my get ready to be on the go. Thank you and thanks tomSkill Share for sponsoring you.
Great tips for packing, Karen!! I’ve never been on a sewing retreat, yet! I’ve only been quilting for about 5 years, had a retreat in 2020 but of course, canceled! I’m ready to go now!!!!Thanks Karen for all that you teach us!!!😍
I am going to visit family in four weeks and since it has been so long since being able to do a quilt guild workshop, this could not have come at a better time. Great reminder of what all I need to bring. Also, some great suggestions for what I don't have and the links to purchase some things. Uh oh, more $ to spend, but I really, really do need those things. 😊 Thanks for the tips.
I went visiting for the first time in a year last week and discovered packing is a skill that you can forget. It took me forever to get myself together
I started a list a full week before my trip. I carried it with me everywhere. By the time I needed to pack it was amazing. When I got to my week long workshop I was set. I did not forget anything. I did help two other ladies who forgot oil for their machines and new needles. I also have learned to carry a sweater or hoodie sometimes air conditioning can be a little too much depending on where you end up sitting. If I don’t need it the jacket just stays in my car.
Lots of great tips, as usual! Thanks Karen. I always look forward to your videos. I am also a list person, and so far have not forgetten anything for a sewing weekend. I did however, forget to pack my tent for a camping weekend one year, despite having a list!! Lesson learned - check, check, then check again!
Hi Karen from South Dakota! What a truly joyful way to start my Saturday morning watching your video! Thanks for sharing your great tips and tricks! I'm going to check out your website regarding the cruise next year - looks fantastic! Stay well and thanks so much for everything you provide to all of your viewing friends!
Yours is similar to what I packed when I was staying with my granddaughters. Except that mine was set up for die cutting. My baby Sizzix and basic dies.
Got excited when I saw you have the same 910 - will download the checklist. I live in Covid Central Florida so it will be awhile before retreats - but I can be ready! Thank you for always inspiring me.
Thanks for taping back in front of that gorgeous red quilt. I love that quilt. Do you have the pattern? I think I need to make one for myself. It makes me happy every time I see it
Fantastic, thank you. I’m heading to a retreat at the end of the month. This was so useful. I’m also packing a bag of scraps and crumbs as I have been so inspired by your videos.
That was so helpful. Haven't made retreats but I do enjoy going to visit friends and family and if their working and I need to stay busy this will help me think ahead and the best way to carry it. Thank you so much. Another great video
Hello from Germany, Thank for this very helpful video - as a matter of fact, I also have a suitcase of travel stuff always ready packed. But what I never do is just driving it around in the trunk of my car. In Germany, the gasoline prices are skyhigh, you can possibly not imagine the prices! Therefore I try to have as little weight in the trunk as possible since it has a more than notecable effect on the gas consumption of the vehicle. It is so easy to do something for the environment - just wheel the suitcase to the car, put it in the trunk and drive off. No need to drive it around when not needed
I agonized over what to bring on a week long trip to Colorado for a family get together. Finally decided on my Featherweight and a few projects but forgot the seam guide or tape. I’m sewing anyway, just more carefully. I’ll look for a deal on that kind of bag. Thank you for a great tutorial on packing it all up!
I keep a standard list in a note app on my phone. Before any retreat I add the specific projects and speciality tools I might need to the list. I just bought a new machine, that is a little lighter than my old Bernina, so that it would be easier to haul (but they don't come with hard shell cases anymore, so I need to get a rolling tote.
Great video, Karen! And so timely for me. I'm heading off next month across country in our RV. I have a bag similar to yours and was wondering if I could fit everything in it that I would need. Now I know. Thanks for the great information! Blessings to you.
My list also includes calling my credit card company to let them know what area I will be in when shopping. I also have to call the mobile phone company of I am close to the Canadian border in case I'm picked up by a Canadian cell tower.
Good one! I learned about the cell towers going the other way--picking up a U.S. cell tower while still in Canada--the hard way, and now I take great care if I will be anywhere near the border. :)
Karen, thank you so much for this! I was invited to a small retriet with my daughter a couple months ago but we said no because there was no time to plan. We walked in to one of my favorite fabric stores and the owner invited us and let us know it was the next day. We are going to quiltcon in February and I have been unsure of what to bring. I can't seem to find a list and I don't know how the classes work as far as supplies and tools go. This video was really helpful! Thank you so much! So I will ask you, what DO we bring to quiltcon???? Thank you!!!!!!
My group is getting together in October for a Quilt Retreat as we are now all double vaxed. Sooooo excited. Love the video. Do you have any favorite retreat locations in Ontario, or do you just stay with friends.
What is the type of blade sharpener you use? I have never tried one, I send my used blades to a company here in the US that resharpens them and sells them, when you send in used blades you can buy used or new at a discount. But if the blade sharpener works, I would like to try it. Thanks for all the useful tips in your video, I don’t go to retreats much but occasionally go to classes. I forgot my power cord and foot pedal once, such a pain! Checklists are the way to go.

Have machine, will travel! Always keep my small machine in my car along with necessary tools!
Kindred spirit🤚
Do the smaller, more manual machines not have a risk of freezing? I live in Michigan.
Don’t forget to bring your sewing machine manual, it could come in handy no matter how well you think you know your machine.
Get a copy online and keep it on your phone or iPad…forget the bulk
Your grandsweetie‘s plea brings to mind a quip I saw online, “The child who becomes addicted to quilting will have no money for drugs!”
Two suggestions:
My bag has a folding ruler- has been pretty sturdy.
Thank for the terrific tips for packing!
I am definitely in the ‘too little’ camp 🤣🤣🤣
Great list of travel tips and supplies. I wish I could just pack and go now. Change of scenery would be great after endless weeks of lockdown. 👍🇦🇺
You amaze me. I can’t even keep my project organized.
Absolutely always love catching up with you.
I’ve tried to use what I already have but I love the sound of you magnifying lamp. I’ll need to check that out
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts
The magnifier lamp was purchased for my motor home & cross stitching, then I discovered how useful it is and well it travels with me to everything.
Great list for travel! Thank you for posting this video and sharing your talent!
You certainly have everything down to a great system, hope you have big times on all you adventures. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Thank you. I missed everyone and look forward to seeing them in person
My bag is quite simular. Love the idea of the projects being in the bins.
It means I don’t need to resort my tools every trip
I have found your videos so helpful!!
Great travel bag ideas. I sew 1 night a week and need to create this. Luckily my friend has an ironing and cutting station so some items I can leave behind. Great going!
Thanks for the organization video. Will be great to refer to next time I travel.
Excellent
I dog sit & my suv looks like a storage room full of fabric & notions lol! I’ve been working on reorganizing! Lol!
LOl
I’m heading off on a quilting retreat next week, and I tend to take everything but the kitchen sink, so your video has come at the right time!
Oh boy, I can do the kitchen sink when I don’t think it through too
That's witty 🤣
And then I never touch 2/3 of what I take with me. That's why I LOVE this list. I put it into the Notes section of my iPhone and iPad, so I always have it. And I added a few small items I always like to take with me.
At a sewing retreat many years ago, I saw a woman with a magnetic pin tray in a small food container. I had the same container at home (totally useless for food as the lid is so tight that you end up spilling the food) and also a magnetic tray. Put them together and love them. Also learnt how to knit small items on a circular knitting with a large loop. Then there were the organised lessons. :-)
Magnetic dishes seem to be cheaper at tool/home improvement stores (Harbor Freight comes to mind) than through the quilting/sewing shops.
Thanks for the great suggestions! Love the bungee cord idea. I always bring too much stuff when I go somewhere but I’m getting better! Lol. 🪡🧵🪡
It’s so easy to overpack
Very helpful. Thankyou Karen !
I always feel appreciated when my kids or close friends ask me to mend something. This is great list!
Thank you for sharing your packed bag. And I too, love my 910. This video really helps my get ready to be on the go. Thank you and thanks tomSkill Share for sponsoring you.
Wow! So organised. And helpful.
Great tips for packing, Karen!! I’ve never been on a sewing retreat, yet! I’ve only been quilting for about 5 years, had a retreat in 2020 but of course, canceled! I’m ready to go now!!!!Thanks Karen for all that you teach us!!!😍
Thank you for the tips! 💐 I’m hoping to go on my first retreat soon, the list will be very handy. I love your videos. 👏🏻👏🏻
Well done! I’ll print the packing list, laminate it, and put it in my travel bag. I need a new bag. Thanks for the recommendation. Happy Saturday!
😎 enjoy
Thanks so much for all of your videos, Karen. I always learn a lot from them. Can you make a video on how you sew your EPP hexies, please?
Just looking at that glacier video has me all excited
Wow it’s amazing how much you were able to pack!
😎
Yours is similar to what I packed when I was staying with my granddaughters. Except that mine was set up for die cutting. My baby Sizzix and basic dies.
Got excited when I saw you have the same 910 - will download the checklist. I live in Covid Central Florida so it will be awhile before retreats - but I can be ready! Thank you for always inspiring me.
❤️❤️❤️ my 910
Thanks for taping back in front of that gorgeous red quilt. I love that quilt. Do you have the pattern? I think I need to make one for myself. It makes me happy every time I see it
Excellent info! Thank you Karen
I like to keep busy too. And helping repair things helps friends out too
That's awesome! I hope to go on my first retreat someday...
Hello from Germany,
Thank for this very helpful video - as a matter of fact, I also have a suitcase of travel stuff always ready packed.
Interesting
Thanks for this invaluable information. So helpful.
So glad you found it helpful
Wouid you mind linking what plastic containers you use for your projects organization?
I agonized over what to bring on a week long trip to Colorado for a family get together. Finally decided on my Featherweight and a few projects but forgot the seam guide or tape. I’m sewing anyway, just more carefully. I’ll look for a deal on that kind of bag. Thank you for a great tutorial on packing it all up!
So cool
Such good advice Karen, I have myself lost power cables and power foot, very frustrating when it happens.
Love the new theme music!
I have that same case only blue.
I would have loved a blue over black one
Wow!!!! I am a new sewer and quilter… your ideas are amazing… thank you! I will be at Quiltcon in Phoenix in February 2022.. will you be there?😀
Congrats on the anniversary
I have never been to a quilting retreat but if I ever go, I know how to pack for it now lol
Karen--Can you post where you found the wheelie bag--I haven't seen anything sinceI watched the video that compares with this nifty choice! thanks!
Great ideas
What do you pack for QuiltCon, Karen? Besides the supplies lists for particular classes, I am a bit flummoxed as to what to bring.
Excellent advice!
Thank you
Great video, Karen! And so timely for me. I'm heading off next month across country in our RV. I have a bag similar to yours and was wondering if I could fit everything in it that I would need. Now I know. Thanks for the great information! Blessings to you.
It works so well. Glad you can use it
Thanks Karen - great vid!! I’m lucky to have a trip coming up soon ☺️
I love your wrap in the thumbnail. Pattern?
It came that way
My list also includes calling my credit card company to let them know what area I will be in when shopping.
At the moment I am just doing small retreats with friends who are doubled vac’d
Thanks for this.
I would love to know about the blade sharpener as well please
