I probably did 50 cuttings from different roses a few years ago when I had my garden. I used garden soil in pots, rooting hormone, kept 1 set of leaves on each cutting, placed the pots on the ground and covered with a big transparent plastic box from IKEA (upside down) . Be sure to let some air in at one end of the box. More than 50 % success. Large Bush roses and climbers had the best success rate. Watch for roots coming out though the draining holes at the bottom of the pots, then you can replant.
I am so glad I am not alone! I can get almost anything to grow but I have had almost zero success trying to root roses. The stems stay green and even put out growth, but no roots. I have tried in soil and in water. I am trying again, and using a heat mat. We will see....
When you're trying to do a scientific style experiments you want to try to keep everything except a single variable the same. Same size cup, same amount of water, same temperature of water, same location in the house, same stem length, from the same mother plant, same number of stems in each cup (I would recommend only one stem in each cup), etc ... Then only change one of the variables for your experiment; since your experiment has to do with root production you probably focus on those things that stimulate root production like: aspirin, cinnamon, honey, root hormone, aloe vera, house water, hard water, spring water, distilled water, electrolyte water, Vitamin Water, By the way I think the water color change is an indication that your plant medium has bled out -- like making tea, primarily due to the water being too warm or the Sun heating up the water, so you need to make sure that the water is on the cooler side of room temperature and that the plants are in a shady location; you also want to change the water more frequently so that the water maintains high oxygen levels -- I would change the water every other day.
Hi Maria, I don't know if you've had lots of success with your cuttings since posting the video, so I wanted to give you a link to a horticulturist who is an expert rosarian. I followed this advice and 90% of my cuttings take root. The one thing to watch out for is that when growing in soil, the leaves may begin to emerge but that doesn't necessarily mean the roots are established yet. (You saw this happen with the cuttings you tried rooting in water.) After putting the cutting in a growing medium, I use an old 2 litre soda bottle with the bottom cut off and put that over top of the cutting (take off the cap) to maintain humidity. The following link gives detailed instructions and answers to most of the questions you may have: www.rkdn.org/roses/propagate.asp Good luck! Edit: If the link doesn't work, type the following in a google search window you will get the page: Propagating Roses From Cuttings by Dr. Malcolm M. Manners
Lorraine L put cuttings in plastic container like from orange juice. Put hormone rooting stuff on cuttings, put a little water in it ,put cap on container. Open about every other day to give them a bit of air. Buds have started growing on them within 3 days. Finally got mine to grow this way. Good luck
I used the hormone. Removed the skin at the bottom about an inch. Applied the hormone. Planted it in the soil. Kept the soil wet. After a week, I saw leaves on a few stems. Some of the stems take a lot longer to sprout the leaves. I don't know whether they grew roots or not. I'll wait until they grow more to plant them in a bigger pots.
Maria's Plants All the stems I planted in the soil dried up. I put stems in the water. I saw some bumps and some white roots? growing slowly. Some progress... But, I saw fungus on the stems. Water method works better for me. Still, no complete roots...
Hi, for roses in my experience they will not root in water. Also the time to take the cutting is important, you should take cutting late December to mid January (in the northern hemisphere) , that is the best time. Also the cutting should be taken from a 1cm thick stem that is cut to 6 to 8 inches tall. When planting the stems remove all or most of the leaves then cut a diagonal cut at the base of the stem then insert it in a good aerated soil (mix of perlite, sand and peat moss is good), you need to water it (not soak it) then cover the whole stem with plastic bag or a 2L bottle that is cut at the base. Keep the plant in a semi-shaded place and wait for 2-4 months.
My roses do root in water that I haven't change but have topped up, I use a little garden soil in the water to give it some food but it takes ages for it to grow roots in the uk
Maybe it's the climate where you live? Or are they outside all day getting sunlight? I guess I'm lucky to live in hawaii... the moisture keeps the plants from drying out and we have sunshine year round, weather stays relatively warm. I've simply put my rose cutting in a water bottle with 3 inches of purified or rain water and have always had success.
Hi I tried using some cinnamon powder and brown sugar water for fresh rose cuttings. It really helps to feed those cuttings with essential sugars to keep leaves and stem fresh since they were cut off from original plant. Also I did noticed that if I just placed a cutting in just plain water, in just 2 days you can see it dried up. What I did was regularly prep my cinnamon and sugar water plus dipping the bottom tip with baking soda to prevent rot. Using just all natural products from kitchen since I dont have any rooting powder
I don't know, but my Mom successfully rooted many roses. They became beautiful full rose bushes. She told me she would cut the stem upwards from the bottom, make two slits, about two inches long. Then she would put it in the soil and put a jar over it. To me it seemed like she just left it outdoors. They always sprotted roots and leaves and grew into big beautiful rose bushes.Goid luck!!
Ok me too But last year I took cuttings in fall and put dirt in a container and put rooting hormone on them and pit them In with alot of water to last all winter and covered it with a bag. I kinda thought they would die and forgot about them in April I went outside and more than 5 were growong roots and to day branches are growing. First year trying it was so easy
I have success planting them directly to the ground. Ground soil not potting soil. Keep ground soil moist for a moth. I've been doing these method for 18 years and my house are surrounded with roses.
Cris Carmen cris i wish you were my neighbor and help me with roses. i have such a bad luck with roses i tried planting them directly to ground with lots of sun and other with little sun during the day and i have no luck i bought them in different stores.. i guess i have a green thumb for indoor plants but not out doors plants... im not giving up some day i will have them grow beautiful on my back yard i still have faith..
Hi, Beatriz If you have roses growing in your backyard. The best advice to you, is to air layer your roses. Its the best and effective way of rooting the wood of your rose. Search Air Layer on youtube they show you how to do. And if you successfully air layer your roses. Soon your backyard will fill up with beautiful roses all the way to your front yard.
The point of a root is to send water to the plant. If the plant is already submerged in water with no leaves on top to pull the water (transpiration), and it is getting enough water throught its 'skin' (looking green)..then why should it grow roots?
I did the humidity dome-same thing. I did the potato with Hormone-nothing. I’m going to do it again with water- without changing it and with hormone without it touching the bottom. That way worked for my other plants.
Yes you right I have tried too but no roots in water and in soil dip in honey no success but I have too many plants in my yard n they r healthy with flowers 💐 but rooting in water n soil does not working hope it work for someone
Roots need oxygen, you might not be providing enough. Try a nutrient solution of maybe kelp or a root promoting fert with more P. A root focused fert. Air stone bubble the solution in its reservoir to provide it with oxygen. I did this with plant cuttings of various types and the roots would produce fast and plenty. Are you using tap water? I just also successfully got a rose to propagate with the Bonnide rooting hormone, scrape a slight bit on the bottom of stem near the cut, and dip in the rooting hormone, and stick in some fairly decent compost dirt/ potting soil, keep it nice and moist everyday. Try not to saturate it at first washing off the hormone powder. Plants need to transpire the water in the soil and goes out through their leaves or up stem, so if you try this method, the soil should remain fairly wet, but with fair drainage to promote vacuum of air intake when the water level lowers and pulls available oxygen down to the roots. Soil needs to be loose, well drained, yet retain moisture so it doesn't dry out so fast. I think sometimes those parts arent getting the oxygen, then start dying and rots. Other times its getting too dry and starts to die as well, and the cells cant function in that part of the "straw" to suck up anymore water / nutrients... Hope you find a steadily successful method.
Maybe only some types of roses can do growing from cuttings. Roses are not like mint to put them in water and automaticaly after 1-2 weeks to have plenty of roots. Do you know method to extract seeds from roses? Some other method to propagate roses without cuttings?
Use a glass jar and you shouldn't let the water turn color and leave it in as much sunlight as possible. Change water like every three days and it takes around 4 weeks the white stuff forming is the roots beginning to start growing.
Dear Madam, I did root successfully sometimes although many of them died or died even after having roots. And I don't use hormone because I don't have. After all, I think the most important things to make the stem root are sunlights and moisture. The stems need warmth and sunlight but not too hot and they need moisture but not too wet. Then please try water the soil after put the stem in and use a part of a plastic bottle to cover the branch and put it at a place with some sunshine please. I hope you succeed. By the way I haven't use the potatoes yet.
Well even if you don't get any new roots and just a few leaves then that mean you should move into a pot of good potting soil and let it grow from that, and make sure you give it a lot of sun light.
Mene paani me gulab ki kalam lagai h 10 din ho gaye h lekin abhi roots nhi aayi h new Patti aaa rahi h ab kya Krna chaiye unko matti me lagaye ya abhi pani me rehne de ????
The water has color that means it developed algae or microorganisms. You need to change water every 3 days and use filtered water to avoid the effect of the chlorine.
one video suggested that you keep ( those in water ) cuttings in at least 4 hrs of sunlight.. which is not possible in cold countries ( unless it's summer time)
Hi, you have to cut the rose stem in the water and leave it inside the water for 10 mins. let the water gets into the rose stem before transfer to new pot.
it should work in soil. but it takes skill and patience. to me the sucess rate is 10% or so. it also might work in water, but you need to keep the water clean and also you need a air pump to aeroate the water (the ones you can see in a fish tank). keep trying.....it is fun.
Now you are the first that told me this, actually my friend Helen, that did the plant swap, told me, and NOW i water my plants without clorine, i have a jug ready for the next day
I’d be interested to see what happens if you actually leave some of the leaves on the plant like you’re supposed to. Rose prolongation is fickle, and without proper attention, you will fail a lot
Hi guys my cutting did grow some roots after 6-8 weeks but was changing water every day or two but water level was about 2-3 inches in same size cup. Now its in soil, was doing well grew some new leaves but bugs ate all still have a hope
Hi guys i tried again with 2 stems in water and one has grown roots after 3 months and another just started both still green Going to upload short video soon
Madam I have seen one video in which it says we should not change even a drop of water I mean we should not change water and we should not add water. Just try one more time without changing water. Yesterday I put some rose cuttings in bottle of water let us see what will happen. If roots grow then how to send u pic? If not then no question
I opened a group for all of us to share our love for plants and addiction on them, your free to upload pictures or videos there, once you get roots then give me a shout out :)facebook.com/groups/128187571175696/
Next time don’t do complete changes only like 1/4 to 1/2 change in the water or if water is still clear don’t change just add to keep same amount in glass my other method is do cutting at joint in each length not middle of branch I never get roots in a cutting in middle of branch but at each joint or section of each growth spurt. I hope I’m clear on my explanation.
Maria's Plants I was looking around and if you are rooting in the middle of a stem do it next to a node where the roots will come out either just under or through the node good luck I hope you show results again this time
Giiirrrlll, did you throw them away?? That white, crusty stuff growing at the cut parts of the stem was "Callousing". That's where the roots come from...
If you have soil in the cup you have to let the water come out of the soil otherwise you have mud and you drown the cutting. As for the water cuttings you can tell by the change of color of the water you're cutting bled out, they probably just needed more oxygen which means that you needed to change the water more often. Try another experiment with five different cuttings one in which the water is changed everyday, one in which you change it every other day, one in which you change it every 3 days, one in which you change it every four days and one in which you change it every 5 days.
I knew what's wrong with it you water it daily that makes fungus growing on them I did it and my roses got root and they're so healthy put at soil and don't water it every single day..just when soil is dry you water it just bit no much
Growing roses from cuttings is a little difficult. You have to grow them in plain soil. Don't add any fertilizer. Use a rooting hormone. Cover the cuttings with a zip lock bag. Don't touch the cuttings. Use a drip water technique, only when you see the soil is dry. After 2 months you will get leaves. Replant them. Hope this helps. 😊
Those cuttings appear to be in too much water half inch to an inch is enough. For whatever reason the roots take a while to show. Refrain from changing the water. It would help if they were getting a little sunlight. Most importantly however, my unsolicited piece of advice or suggestion Set them and forget them, stop watching them and annoying them and yourself lol. Good luck in the future.
Trust me i did leave them and forgot them and nothing, and all i got is new leaves and then died. I would say it would work directly putting it in the soil outside, but in a warm climate area for it to root
Seriously ???? i had put my cuttings in water on 17 Dec 2018... today is 20 Dec. luckily i also put 3 cuttings into ground soil.. i will update you of whatever result i would get.... 4 cups with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon + 2 cups with only water.... 1 cutting in each cup.
@Maria's Plants Sure, i will update the results.... as i have been told by my mother-in-law and friends, rose cuttings usually take about 2 months to sprout in soil. After watching your video, i bought a rooting hormone powder which i am not sure at all if it is a genuine one as being in India lollzz, i took out 1 cutting from water and put it in soil with rooting powder. i could not find the one i wanted in local market. ruclips.net/video/f83OpquX-w8/видео.html ..... anyway, i will keep updating until i succeed in growing this multi-colour rose (as my wife and in-laws told me it is, they have it in their farm and they have grown it from a cutting from their neighbors). ...4-Jan-2019
Did not grow, did not succeed, it was an experiment, since many people said it does grow, and show NO end result, and i showed everyone, it does not work
Listen that's not fair because I've tried some of those methods and they didn't give me routes either and it has nothing to do with the green thumb that's an insult
What can i do if the cut are starting to dark😥 i use honey to become root hormone in rose stem but the cut on top and down are getting darker..what can i do😫😱?
Same happened to me, I didn't bother i threw it, People give me tips to put rooting hormone and put directly in seeding soil. I have not tried that yet.
I know it’s late, but the top one, just let it callous over. The bottom one that’s cut right after a nodule is the one you worry about. Cut at about a 60 degree angle. Then strip the bark ONLY about one inch plus the angled cut. So that should be about 1.25 inches. Make sure it’s just the bark you strip. Then lightly scrape the cadmium layer. If you’re using honey (this is a disease/infection barrier only) dip it from the top of the scraped area down and place it in a decent rooting mix of compost and potting mix (75% & 25%) or compost only. Using a root hormone, moisten the scrape down, paint or dip into the hormone powder and plant in the soil mix. DO NOT dip any stems or cuttings directly into hormone jars as it will transfer diseases or infections. Think of it as a human, and use sterile environments and utensils. Pour some in a cup or container and dip there. When done, throw the leftovers away. Don’t pour that back into the jar. You’ll want to strip all but the top 2-3 leaf stems away. I’ve had people tell me cut those leaves in half and don’t cut them at all. Both ways work as far as I can tell. The other no no is using tap water. The chlorine and heavy metals plus whatever gunk is in the pipes is not good. Use a distilled or RO water, or a fresh non-chlorinated bottled water. Then cover and wait. I use an old refrigerator box tray and place my cutting in it, then slide that into a black garbage bag and spritz the inside with about 3 sprays of water. Seal it by folding it under the container. Every week open up the bag to let some air in and out, spritz and repeat. After 4-6 weeks check for roots and transplant into a 4-6 inch pot. I use solo cups with holes in the bottom to begin with. Then transplant with growth expectations. They’ll stay in pots for about a year before I attempt to go to ground with them.
All those people growing roses from cuttings are liers. I have tried everything they say and it does work . My last try will be using the root hormone in water
+Maria's Plants (Indoor/Outdoor Plants) I have roots on mine and it's been about a week. The roots are not at the bottom they are rooting from the little buds where leaves normally would grow. I made sure to cut them so I would have at least 2 buds under the water. I added rooting hormone to the water and after only a week I have new growth coming from the buds above the water line and roots starting from the bud areas under the water.
Trial and error... the success was you trying in the first place, well done 👍
Yes, but will try again in a different way
I probably did 50 cuttings from different roses a few years ago when I had my garden. you need to plant those ones with leaves and put hormone put it in the dirt and put a jar over it for a humidity dome.
When you're trying to do a scientific style experiments you want to try to keep everything except a single variable the same.
Same size cup, same amount of water, same temperature of water, same location in the house, same stem length, from the same mother plant, same number of stems in each cup (I would recommend only one stem in each cup), etc ...

Yes, you are absolutely right.None of the videos seen on RUclips work.
Wow, someone finally agrees with me, Thank You :)
Try cutting from where two stems join
And change water every day or two
I had same size cup and i put only 2-3 inches of water
Good luck
Did you change water every two days? If not that the problem that they rotted away

Try to have the cuttings to be about the length of the width of your hand 5" to 7" long an on the bottom cut more then a 45 degree angle
Ok me too

Root not just for taking water but for taking nutrients too.normal water dont have nutrients
Rooting Rose from cuttimgs is a headache , but why you did it in July ma'am !!!
I did the humidity dome-same thing. I did the potato with Hormone-nothing. I’m going to do it again with water- without changing it and with hormone without it touching the bottom. That way worked for my other plants.

I'm thinking one inch of water would be better because you get more oxygen to the stalk and the roots won't grow more than an inch up anyway
Why I’m saying is put them in water....not soil..but in a dark color container. Do you have any suggestions on how to really root roses
No luck my friend, I tried every way

Yes I agree, doing it in soil and greenhouse method should work
Aloe Vera gel, honey and cinnamon can be used as rooting agents.
did you use tap water? that will kill em...use unchlorinated
Now you are the first that told me this, actually my friend Helen, that did the plant swap, told me, and NOW i water my plants without clorine, i have a jug ready for the next day
Super Video.Danke!
Prabhjot Singh That’s great to hear, mine didn’t survive and I will try again next year, Lol
Prabhjot Singh
I'm patiently watching my stem. Several new leave a in water but no roots yet.
Hi guys i tried again with 2 stems in water and one has grown roots after 3 months and another just started both still green
Going to upload short video soon
Thanks to help my studies from this video
My pleasure
Thank you
Thanks
Cutting in only sand used. Good result
thank you, i will try
They have to have humidity so you need to put a 2 L bottle cut it and put it over it
Yes, will try again
Good video! Guy, I don't understand anything. But well to see.
You can use rooting hormone.
Thank you for the tip
Maria's Plants I was looking around and if you are rooting in the middle of a stem do it next to a node where the roots will come out either just under or through the node good luck I hope you show results again this time
Also use less water about 1/4 of water and cover it so that the steam does not loss moisture
Hey cover it with plasic material and make the green house environment okkk it will definitely grow
Did that
I have grown rose cuttings in sand with daily irrigation. Some of them not all have grown new leaves.I am not sure they have roots.
LEt me know if it does have roots
Giiirrrlll, did you throw them away?? That white, crusty stuff growing at the cut parts of the stem was "Callousing". That's where the roots come from...
Left it there for 2 more weeks, but nothing happened and yes I threw after that.
Thank you for the tips
Yep...I did too but still couldn't be success
Thanks, but didn't grow any roots at all even tried with rooting hormone, and nothing
I knew what's wrong with it
you water it daily that makes fungus growing on them
I did it and my roses got root and they're so healthy
put at soil and don't water it every single day..just when soil is dry you water it just bit no much
Try this on Indian rose variety Indian variety is very hardy
Cups should be dark. Roots won’t grow in see thru cups roots need darkness
AS i said in the video, I also planted some in soil, neither one succeded
Too much water in your cups. You only need half inch of water. Makes a big difference.
Leaves come before the roots
Growing roses from cuttings is a little difficult. You have to grow them in plain soil. Don't add any fertilizer. Use a rooting hormone. Cover the cuttings with a zip lock bag. Don't touch the cuttings. Use a drip water technique, only when you see the soil is dry. After 2 months you will get leaves. Replant them. Hope this helps. 😊
Really appreciate your tips, thank you for taking your time to explain
I dont think she chipped the bottom of them stems after removing them from water. I think idk... 1st timer here ✋
Those cuttings appear to be in too much water half inch to an inch is enough.
SVP vous pouvez mexpliquer ce quel dit merci
Why DO you want to grow it in water?Grow it in soil.
Tried both method, as i did say in the video and none worked
I love these comments.
LOL, yes me too :)
nice
How days to rose growth
Did not grow, did not succeed, it was an experiment, since many people said it does grow, and show NO end result, and i showed everyone, it does not work
super
Keep them out of direct sun til they root.
They were not in sunlight, but i will try a different method soon.
I guess you and I don’t have green thumbs. :(
Oh i do have a green thumb but sometimes there are some plants that are difficult
Listen that's not fair because I've tried some of those methods and they didn't give me routes either and it has nothing to do with the green thumb that's an insult
Roses will sprout new growth before they grow roots. Try using sand or a well draining soil instead of soil. Water very often
Will try, thank you
Always change your water every other day
I noticed that the soil isn't right and over watered it rotted from too much muck I used honey cinnamon and sugar in my vase 😂
Me too no roots 😰😭
Try the greenhouse method
All those people growing roses from cuttings are liers. I have tried everything they say and it does work . My last try will be using the root hormone in water
#Noroots 😂
yes, rootless roses.......
OH my , tell me about it
+Maria's Plants (Indoor/Outdoor Plants) I have roots on mine and it's been about a week. The roots are not at the bottom they are rooting from the little buds where leaves normally would grow. I made sure to cut them so I would have at least 2 buds under the water. I added rooting hormone to the water and after only a week I have new growth coming from the buds above the water line and roots starting from the bud areas under the water.
Hi. A lot of videos are not true. Do your own stuff. They dont reveal all. Best of luck
Yes, very true, thank you
I realize ads are necessary but these are too many and too long. I lose interest.
Mee too, but I will try again in a different method
Stop changing the water
So they all failed
Yup, but will try the green house method
صوتك جميل جدا 😍
I watched this stupid video to hear no root no root no root
put it in soil!! sorry
Its worng way
Lol
