The list of the best South American national football teams has been presented since the first competitions. Latin American teams started competing in football at their Copa America since 1916. They continued at the Summer Olympics in 1924. In 1930, FIFA organized the first FIFA World Cup. In 1985, France, the winner in Europe, played against Uruguay, the winner of the Copa America. This tournament has different names: Finalissima, Grand Final, CONMEBOL - UEFA Champions Cup, Artemio Franchi Cup.
In 1980, the only tournament of its kind was played, the World Champions' Gold Cup. In 1992, the FIFA Confederations Cup was organized. The ranking was compiled from the winners of these tournaments.
