i would love to see a video on the other aesthetics of david bowie
he has a vid on the thin white duke
Absolutely, and especially of the later eras, the 90s and 2000s are barely explored in Bowie, and I believe there's some really good material there, both in aesthetics and music (hell, even during his "worst" era, there's still stuff worth checking out!)
Actually that's not a bad idea. Analyzing the evolution of Bowie's aesthetic since it was just as vital to him as his music was.
A couple months ago in a antique store in the middle of nowhere Georgia I bought Aladdin Sane album. When checking Out an older Woman Who Is probably Someones grandmother looked with Shock And probably Horror at the album cover. She then said in a southern charm kinda way, “well he was really something else”. Just goes to show how cutting edge Bowie still is.
That is Beautiful
A lad, insane.
Bowie is our Shakespeare.
David Bowie was and still is such a legend. Legends never die! Had such a huge impact not only on music, but fashion and helping people to be themselves. I always enjoy your videos, Poly. Thank you!
This is an excellent channel, I don't always like the artist but it's worth the time spent listening anyway.
I had a orange Bowie mullet in high school, loved it, always loved his various styles, thanks!
I should have done up the lightening bolts in some way with the hair, oh well, it's never too late.
Supernatural levels of talent and chose his collaborators with great care and astute judgement. Add this lot together you get a wonderful fusion of experimentation and contemporary trends.
One of the all time greats, obvs.
i have not even watched the video yet but i wanted to say this:
your channel is the most underrated channel on youtube. you just keep uploading videos so full of detail and beauty and just genuine passion. and everytime i look at the views and stuff it hurts bc how do people not notice how great your videos are produced. but the fact you keep going confirms even more how much passion and love you put into every single video. and i cant understand why it needs to be said in the first place but you deserve so much more appreciation for these videos! they mean a lot to me.
sending love❤️
I feel like the name Aladdin Sane was a play on words and Bowie’s way of describing how he felt during that tour and being so conflicted and going crazy so he was “ A Ladd Insane “
I've always thought the lightning bolt was inspired by the Ziggy Stardust track Moonage Daydream because the chorus goes "Keep your 'LECTRIC EYE on me babe"
Aladdin Sane is such an iconic Cover. I also love Ziggy Stardust. Bowie is such an Icon.
No matter what, ziggy is gonna be the true bowie character to me.
Thin white Duke is up there too.
Give me glam bowie or give me psycho bougie bowie
Nah, big hair, big cod-piece Labyrinth Bowie is the apex of Bowie.
You'll be glad to know that Norman Odam aka The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, who was Bowie's inspiration for Ziggy, is still around. Jeff Feuerzeig apparently just finished a documentary on "the Ledge", who is best described as "the Thin White Duke of Hazzard"...
"The grueling life of America had worn him to the bone." If by America you mean cocaine, then yes.
Yes!! Love the Bowie content! Keep it coming!!
This was a really good video about one of the most influential looks in 20th century music. ( Also, I'm surprised that you haven't done a video on mother mother yet.)
A-LAD-INSANE... All those years and now I get it. Thanks.
Always happy when i see another one of your videos getting uploaded, hope you are doing well!
I love these cover stories. I’d really like to see you do bat out of hell by meatloaf.
All our money spent on James Webb just to confirm that Major Tom is utterly alone.
the square videos still weird me out! love your essays and editing, though, absolutely top notch!
I love how this video is in the dimensions of an album!
Good to see a video on major Tom ☮️ keep up the fantastic work
i fucking love this series you make, for real, thank you so much for this
dude ur video on the thin white duke was the first that i’ve watched
I like your voice .. it adds a certain drama to the narrative. Good job.
Hyped for the Bowie doc
I adore Bowie and many of the people he worked with. Bowie was a walking work of art.
The James Webb Telescope is so awesome with the images it captures! I love that it reminds people of Bowie and other space like personae or albums.
Man i was dying to watch your new videos.idk.how many times i rewatched your videos.aaahahaha if i can buy that subscription.
Hyped for a rise in poly videos rn
And now it's an M&Ms wrapper... if that doesn't signify legacy, I don't know what does.
Anything new that "offends some" is on the right track
more of these pls
You should do a Hotel California Cover Stories next! 🏨
I haven't heard all of Bowie's albums, but of the ones I've heard Aladdin Sane is possibly my favorite. One of my college professors highly recommended Hunky Dory, which is possibly my other favorite. It's probably one of those two. Had I heard A Man Who Sold the World when I was a kid, that would have been my favorite when first getting into Bowie. However, I didn't hear it until I was an adult. I wanted it as a kid because of the cover of him in drag, but my parents' budget was limited, and my allowance was even more limited.
i have this super cool shirt with all of the photos taken for the aladdin sane photoshoot
Bruh so cool how your vids aren’t showing up in my feed, missed your last 4. Grr RUclips
i really want to see you talk about the Scary Monsters album in one of your videos
The cover is the Monalisa of music, more questions than answers.
He nailed it
"But there was speculation that the silvery substance on his shoulder was something other than a tear drop "
Pretty sure Jagger had something to do with it.
Tongue polish?
Hahaa love this
Been subscribed since 17k subs
Great video, had to watch Ziggy /stardust right afterwards.
I just love your voice..
The album cover is fantastic and iconic. But it’s not my favorite look of his. I love the Thin White Duke and also nineties Bowie. Its been over six years but I still miss knowing he is alive in this world.
Didn't realise you still made Theses videos
"Wait. Is David Bowie really God?" - Penelope Garcia, Criminal Minds
Please do a detailed review of the album Abbey road. And do you know anything about the hidden solo in the song let it be ?
And here I always thought "this is what lightning looks like when you catch it in a bottle."
Amazing
For me David Bowie's most iconic look was from The Labyrinth. But I wasn't around when this look was around. I also saw The Labyrinth on VHS as a kid in the 90's. So Bowie as the the Goblin King will always be more iconic to me.
David Bowie. The man. The Legend
Video needs a correction: The _Aladdin Sane_ lightning bolt was inspired by Elvis' "TCB" lightning bolt, which itself was inspired by _Shazam!_ comics.
Oh. A Lad Insane. I just got that
a lad insane !!
I just saw a David Bowie Barbie on a toy store
That is why he has his own emoji! 👨🏿🎤
Whoa I never knew this, thanks! 👨🎤👩🎤🧑🎤
Hey Poly could you do a video on the underground country music scene that's out of the mainstream with people like Sierra Ferrell, Willi Carlisle and company
Aladdin Sane sure felt like a yin yang kind of concept.
I heard David got the lightning bolt design from Elvis’s TCB design
A lad insane
A Lad Insane.
Thanks for promoting curiosity stream. We need this world to generate more curiosity and thought rather than camouflaged opinions
Video on the corn man outfit when
Hello, I was wondering what effect you use on your photos? Like the photo at 2:12?
What really made Bowie's influence clear to myself (bc I'd no idea that he is/was so powerful in culture) was when I was scrolling through the emojis menu and stumbled upon 👨🎤 & 👩🎤 the lightning bolts are clearly Bowie-esque.
Goblin King
Aladdin Sane sounds like a lad insane to me.
A Lad Insane
Consider doing a video on Blackstar. It’s not everyone who goes out with an album like that.
Ziggy Stardust ✨️
Could you do shinedown's planet zero album
Halloween Jack the Insane Lad cracks America on the fat white railways. The only way to fly!
I always thought it was interesting how despite the album cover’s iconic status, the album itself wasn’t full of radio-friendly hits when compared to his other releases around this era. It’s darkly erotic and paranoid songs haven’t necessarily reached the “classic” status in the eyes of the general public as say Starman or Rebel Rebel, despite the album artwork becoming the most iconic Bowie look of them all. This is by no means a bad thing though, and I think it adds the the albums mystery and allure.
Ooooo,aaaaaahh,peopleooooo
TOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jazz pianoooow, in the under bellyyyyeeee.
I am a simple girl, I see the face of David Bowie in a video and I click on it immediately.
a lad insane ;)
They is this video a square
It's a BUF lightning bolt, hehe
Why are you doing these in 1:1?
Bowie adjacent question….would you ever do a video on Hedwig and the Angry Inch?
Why is this a square format?
Personally I don't like vocal fry that much. It is certainly less present, or even absent, in older videos. But don't get me wrong, I still love the content!
yo that was a decision to turn the "z" in that graphic for good ol "Ziggy Stardust" makes it look like a slur, brother.
The big question is:
Was "Diamond Dogs" Bowie's attempt to be *everybody's* best friend? Think about it...
Please make a video on Whitney Houston !!!!
If it wasn’t for Bowie’s cocaine habit, we would not have Station to Station, the best album of his career or the amazing and genre pushing Low, Heroes, Ledger trilogy, which are his other great albums of the 70’s, that came from his fleeing to Berlin to get sober.
Not sure we should look for silver linings in someone else's drug addiction, but he made some great art regardless. Perhaps we should celebrate that he was able to make that art despite his addiction, and not cite the addiction as the reason for the art.
@@jmorgan3977 Perhaps I’ll write whatever.
@@jmorgan3977 well Station to Station very much did reflect his addiction, but that doesnt mean we should he glad it happened.
@@daniellaniganohara2456 I appreciate your comment. Thank you.
How have u never made an Elvis vid?
Done by Susie Ronson. Wife of Mick Ronson.
In an interview we did with her in 2007 she stated that she paired it onto his face. We couldn’t get Bowie to confirm as his management heavily control his image and didn’t want anything about how involved Mick Ronson was with the writing.
I wonder if there's a cover story behind Metallica's self titled album, aka "the black album".
How black can it get? None, none more black.
It is a classic look, never actually listened to the album
Why not?
My least favourite of that era. Time is killer though. Listen to Hunky Dory instead
I should, after all I did see him live in concert in my hometown back in the day
It’s a fantastic album!
So I know you did the story of American Idiot, what about the story of 21st Century Breakdown, the better rock opera
And I’ll fight anyone who disagrees
I’m kinda shocked you missed the more esoteric/ACTUAL reason he used a lightning ⚡️ bolt. You really believe it was from some company logo? Lolol. Bowie was DEEP into the occult. Super into Crowley and magick. Etc. Look at the song Quicksand. Etc. The bolt referenced Lucifer. The “fallen angel.” Aka, the Man Who Fell to Earth. Not gonna go too far into all of this in s silly comment. Just sayin. Dig deeper
wtf is this aspect ratio
When he talks about cover art and design in general, he uses a square aspect ratio to mimic album covers
@@fabrislemos Really? Do you have an example? I've never seen another video of his in this format. It's jarring because it doesn't really look good on mobile or PC imo
@@zephdef1781 you're right. I think I've mistaken it with someone else's work. But I still think the reasoning behind it is sound. It's probably to relate to an album cover.
@@zephdef1781 He did one on Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album the same way
ruclips.net/video/ZI-wn-u9jRI/видео.html
C'mon Poly, u did enough videos on DB, there are so many other amazing good artists that u never did a video on or others that u only did once. I know u can do better than just milk David till the last drop
👨🎤
WHY WOULD YOU EVER UPLOAD A VIDEO IN THIS ASPECT RATIO
Where’s the metal?
knowing the backstory of this album cover separates the fans from the posers tbh
