amazing talk thank you so much. I'll share a couple of notes 23:00 Install Ledger in emacs 8:00 company mode 9:30. helme for finding the right functions
Interested how he ensures that he really catches all transactions. How do you update your file when you are at the coffee shop? Do you delay it until you get back home?
In usual accounting practice, accounts have debit or credit balances, not positive or negative balances (and you debit or credit accounts, you don't add or subtract). So it's a bit jarring to see negative values in Ledger.
Are there any practical reasons why this should be jarring? Does the use of +/- actual effect anything? Or is it jarring just because you are used to the conventions of "usual accounting practice?" Sincerely curious.
The use of positive and negatives is explained in the user manual for Ledger. They acknowledge that use of positives and negatives is not typical accounting practice, but they do this in an effort to make the program a little more intuitive for someone who doesn't have an accounting background.
while viewing your .bash_aliases in vim, you should have tried changing your colorscheme (like :colo evening), maybe the contrast would have been better. But Great presentation!
Oh, cmooon in century of Android and iOS we talking about this stuff? In two touches I can get everything about my bank account, so what he talking about?

Koka Bart he is talking about balancing his finances. It is not just the software, it is the methodology. He also talks about using the data from the bank and parsing it. He also has showed a system where he can stay organized, with his money. He apparently is a computer engineer and probably, like he says, he spends time at the command line. Can you compare dragging a finger on a screen compared to typing it at the terminal. Did you watch it at all? He explains why from the 15:00 mark on. Why would someone in this day an age use org-mode instead of Evernote?
The more you use a computer, the more you realize everything should be simple text files.
no form of data will ever be more portable
Austin really knows his ledger mode and I found this talk very interesting. Thanks to Austin and Thoughtbot!
The moment that there are more talks about emacs than vim at thoughtbot :D
amazing talk thank you so much. I'll share a couple of notes
23:00 Install Ledger in emacs

Looks like I get to become better at budgeting and it's an excuse to dig deeper into Emacs.
13:15 is that the guy that held the org mode introduction?
Indeed! Harry was running Boston Emacs, but he's since moved to the west coast.
Austin Walker oh cool. He has a really recognisable voice. That org mode vid got me to start using emacs which I now use daily for everything

Nowadays I update everything about once a month. Adding new transactions is really speedy because 90% of them are copied and only the numbers change.
how do i automate stock trading with emacs ? :D
Is it possible to get the slide somewhere ?
Certainly! Check out my github here - github.com/awalker4/ledgerTalk2016
Austin Walker Thanks...I later found it out. Forgot to delete the comment. I have been using ledger ever since. Thank you very much.
still using ledger? :)
Great presentation, great tool.
I was doing my accounting stuff via a dirty libreoffice calc file but I am definitely gonna try ledger
Here's one tool to import transactions from csv into ledger format: github.com/cantino/reckon
Once you get the columns right works pretty nicely
Very clear and useful presentation of ledger! Thank you!
Nice! Currently a YNAB classic user, but I can't stand the direction they're going with the new stuff. So ledger might be an interesting approach.
Thank you very much, as a beginner with ledger and ledger mode the presentation was very helpful for me.

Thanks for the suggestion! You reminded me that I also still have plenty to learn about vim. :)
Good ol' Harry asking the bonkers questions

Well, org-mode is usefull if Emacs is your main instrument, just all wrok inside one window.
Okay, I will try wach once again)
