Hey everyone! Thank you so much for your views, comments and messages. If you've wanted to check out Medellin, I'm organizing a short group trip for October 2022 where you'll get an immersive taste of Medellin, its surroundings and Colombian culture. For more information, message me on Instagram @soniadheer or send me an email at sonia.dheer@gmail.com. It's going to be a great time!
I just came across your video - very straightforward and informational. I am an American Gringo, but a Colombian enthusiast and enjoyed your posting. Thanks
Thanks Sonia. It's really a lovely setup. You did good. I've been living in Medellin Laureles for the last four years on a retirement visa so bought my own furniture which enabled me to find an unfurnished apartment for even less. The longer I live here the more ways I discover to find great prices on soo many items. Oops! I just scrolled down and see that you have departed Medellin but do come back again. The climate here is so mild compared to most other Colombian cities. It's Goldilocks. not too hot, not too cold, not too humid or dry and the vegetation is lush. We have very few cases of the virus. I'm really amazed that there are so few infections in Medellin. All my favorite restaurants are beginning to open for take out and there's a baker down the street who learned his trade in Europe and he told me I can stop by on Tuesday. Yay!
Love Medellin spent 2 weeks last X Mas and the city and parks are all illuminated and unbelievablely decorated! Love the people the food the “Paisa” lifestyle!Shopping is also incredible with great prices especially at the world famous Hueco nothing like it anywhere in the world!Medellin is very clean and super safe!We went everywhere in the city always felt safe!I am an expat working as a personal trainer in Costa Rica and that price is half of what I charge that’s a good deal!
Wow now I really want to check out Medellin during Christmas time! Sounds amazing! What part of Costa Rica do you live in? I've strongly considered moving to Tamarindo.
DheerSonia I used to live in Playa Naranjo on the gulf of Nicoya which is on the Nicoya Penisula! That is on the other side where Tamarindo and Samara are located. So for the last 3 years we have lived in a small mountain village outside of San Jose! We moved because it is cooler because of the altitude and 15 minutes away from a lot of gyms that I can work at.I bought the house years ago a 2 bedroom 2 bath fixer upper for 25 USD and spent another 10 K on renovation. This way we had the best of both worlds mountain and beach!I kept that house on the gulf for 6 years and sold it to a Canadian Couple for double what I built it for.I love Santa Theresa which has become quite famous maybe to much so because of Mel Gibson,Giselle Bund hen and Tom Brady along w the Kardashians!I preferred it when it was more popular for Surfing and beautiful beaches.I have lived all over Costa Rica trained w a lot of Celebrities including Arnold Schwarzenegger at his home in Samara!I love Costa Rica you can still live an affordable lifestyle if you do like the locals do!I have travelled extensively from Europe to the Far East got my Judo Black Belt in Japan,Practiced Tae Kwon Do with Korean Marine ROK troops,Kick Boxing in Thailand,Hap Kido under master Bo Su Hand of Billie Jack Fame.Had my own Martial Arts School in Fl and now enjoy the peaceful people of Costa Rica!
Much cheaper long term if u get a place like that unfurnished and for a year. Also if you move out of Medellin you can get another 25-30% off...then you are looking at $500-$600/month for a place like that.
I live in colombia right now and all of my expenses are $325.00 a month, I'm staying in San Martin-Meta a very nice small town in the llanos, south east of Bogota

She's definitely getting taken on the rent. She could easily get a comparable furnished home closer to the $900-1,000 price range even in Poblado. But she seems happy with the price, so it is a win-win situation for both sides. Overall, the cost of living compared to what she is receiving is mesmerizing. Hard to beat the price compared to her lifestyle. It would cost her triple that amount in Canada for the same lifestyle.
Wow, that's a great price. I've helped train elite professional athletes before and it sounds like a good deal she's getting for that portion of her stay there.
Hi Sonia!! Lovely video, we're thinking about following in your footsteps and staying in el Poblado as well! We're curious, what service do you use for a personal chef? That sounds amazing! Thank you for your help!
I would prefer to stay in smaller cities like Manizales, Pereira, San Gil etc. Less crowded, cheaper, friendlier people. If you know someone there it's much easier to negotiate an apartment because you won't get scammed and pay foreigner prices. I'm planning to do a language immersion in Manizales, visited there last year and loved the city, not too big or busy but still has everything a city needs. (I'm from New Zealand so I guess I prefer the chill lifestyle as compared to a busy city haha)
Hello! I'm Colombian. I think not necessarily because being a small city, they don't want to scam you. In other words, I think that both in a big city and in a small one they may want to scam you by seeing the face of "Gringo". In any case, if you want to be protected, you can search for places on the Internet, Facebook or also with a real estate agency. There are also very quiet towns near Bogotá, such as Chia, Cota, La Vega, La Calera. Hope this is helpful to you, good luck!
Medellín is super cool , you hace to try different areas. As many people know, Poblado is very crowed and everything is very expensive. Go to Laureles, Conquistadores, Castellana, Estadio. Etc. These areas are so cool , safe and you will get more for your money.
I’m planning on doing a couple/few months in Medellín after COVID to do a language immersion. Did you find it easy to get the rental as someone who was just there temporarily? Also, did you go there solo and if so, did you feel comfortable being there solo?
Yes it was super easy finding a rental. Airbnb is great but there are also a few companies that specialize in short term rentals for visitors who want a furnished apartment for 1 or more months. The rental company I used was Liv Realty Medellin and I highly recommend them. Yes, I went solo and felt super safe and comfortable my whole time there. Of course, like any big city, there are places you shouldn't hang out alone/at night but as long as you practice common sense, you'll be fine! :)
DheerSonia thank you! I have checked out AirBnB as well and saved a few homes for future. It’ll be awhile as I need to wait until all this coronavirus stuff is over with but it’s definitely going to happen.
Thanks for the tour, good presentation. The echoing would be a deal breaker for me. Also, I never liked having having a patio, or balcony where multiple apartment windows are viewable to me? I would rather rent a house, or a inlaw unit in a poorer neighborhood.
For short term lux/furnished rentals in Poblado as a non-resident, that was the average price I found when doing research from outside Colombia. If you know of any agencies or resources where you can get a nice apt for 1 month cheaper, please let me know because I'd love to pay less next time I go there if possible haha

Thank you so much! :) Nice to see a fellow Torontonian who understands the Toronto condo struggle lol. I was thinking of staying in Sabaneta on my next trip!

It' seems a little pricey compared to what I've seen elsewhere. How much is it unfurnished? I plan on working remotely for a month or 2 in Colombia and I seen 1 level 1 bath for around $600 USD
This apartment doesn't have the option of unfurnished renting unfortunately. And yes, you can definitely get something cheaper especially right now because of covid. I booked pretty last minute and booked with an agency that specializes in luxury rentals for foreigners. They had really good reviews and lived up to them. Everything was super easy/smooth, they were reliable and provided really good service. I didn't mind paying a premium for the comfort, excellent service and peace of mind I got. But I 100% recognize that there are a lot of other options out there! Just gotta do your research and see what fits your needs, wants and desired lifestyle best in my opinion. :)
@@DheerSonia Was this agency Liv Realty Medellin, by chance? Also, do you recall the quality of the internet? (I believe I am currently looking at renting the same place but am concerned about the internet since my job requires video conferencing.) -- Thanks!
@@graham6132 Yes it was Liv Realty Medellin! The quality was very good. My job is also very high "internet heavy" and I was pleasantly surprised that the wifi was able to keep up.
Thanks Sameer! :) Yes the wifi was amazing! I was really worried about that before arriving and was pleasantly surprised at how fast and reliable it was.
Damn Spanish lessons for $6/hr. I'm a Spanish speaker but I'd probably get some of those to try em out. Along with the personal trailer. Haha. I'm glad you did your research before you went!
Hello, What is your opinion of how the Colombian women value and respect their men? They are mostly highly educated and very in tune with what keeps a man happy. Do you share these values that this culture embraces?
Women here its not a diferent they like money, anf easy Life, eventualy you can find a nice girl but is hard. In small towns have more chance, and dont use Tinder is full of whores, and CC Riders.
Hi would you mind posting links to everything you discussed in the video please? I am super eager to move to Columbia in the next 2 years and your experience is making it a lot easier for me to drop everything and go!
4,399,050.55 pesos ($1,002 USD) I'd rather live in Estrato 3, pay $300 a month, and save all that money for other activities or just savings, but to each their own. Modern style apartments make people feel all good inside, so they're not that bad if you're insecure, need to impress others, or have money to🔥burn.
That may be possible if you're ok with compromising some comforts, living further from the centre, staying in an unfurnished apt, if you have a cedulla and/or if you're planning on sticking around longer than just a month. But for my situation, this was the best I could find. I'm sure there are hidden gems out there that are $450-600 but to be honest, $1,300 is so cheap compared to downtown Toronto that I was fine with it haha
You will never get a furnished apt with that view in el Poblado wich is the most exclusive area to live in Medellin for $450-$600 month to month literally impossible, she def got a great deal for just under $1000US
@@wbuffett1 In that video he says that a fully furnished 1 bedroom apartment in El Poblado ranges from $800-$1100 USD. My apartment was $990 USD approximately, so it was within the range that he indicated. He also mentioned that prices can go up 30-40% in the high season months like January which is when I was there.
I have an intermediate level of Spanish. It’s definitely a good idea to know Spanish before you come because it will make your entire experience a lot more fruitful since you’ll be able to better connect with the locals :)

@@DheerSonia Thank you for sharing! What a bummer about the chef and the personal trainer. Have you found replacements? I am plannign my trip at the moment.
You paid way too much for that place. You could have found a place for half that much. Poblado is very touristy and way overpriced. She clearly has no idea what the going rate should be.
You're right, you can definitely find places for half of what I paid! Like I mentioned in the video, Medellin is a city where you can find accommodation on many different budgets. I enjoyed Poblado but I agree it can be touristy + expensive. Next time I go to Medellin I'm definitely going to try out some more local neighbourhoods. As a young solo female traveller and first time Medellin visitor, safety was super important to me and so I found a reputable agency catered to foreigners that had solid reviews. Yes, it cost more but I didn't mind paying a premium for more comfort and less stress. Now that I know the city better, I'm more aware of more cost-friendly rental options and will definitely use them when I move back to MDE! :)
Accommodation: www.livrealtymedellin.com/ Chef: No longer in service Cleaning service: Through Liv Realty Medellin (the company I rented my apartment through) Dance classes: www.dancefree.com.co Neighbourhood: El Poblado Let me know if you have any other questions! :)
Girllll you are overpaying for 1300 dollars. While that is a steal when compared to an apartment back in the states, it is not for a Colombian apartment like yours. They’re are charging you 50-60% more than what they would charge a Colombian citizen. Youre paying gringo price for sure. Ive spent months in Colombia on vacation and i have some US friends living there and they have similar apartments to yours for about 300-500. Anyways i guess if youre rich than its fine but still.... 1300 wow its a rip off. Ill be moving to medellin in July from New York ^_^
It is a tiny apartment. The sink is very small. The staircase is risky. Although, it could be good for a single healthy person but people with knee arthritis will have hard time climbing up the stairs.
Here is a link that provides some good options to find a place to rent: www.dancefree.com.co/diario/apartamentos-en-arriendo-en-medellin?fbclid=IwAR0nzQHft2osjP9UDrV30RbaUEnYIuEr8qKN5kHQpnOZ5PZ-_Jn4cCJjinw
I was only there for a month (hoping to move there after the pandemic is more under control globally). I work remotely so, no, I wasn’t working for a company there. Hope that helps! :)
With regards to the pricing, perhaps it’s not a good idea to disclose the purchasing power between cities from where you come from with those that you do business with. Because I’m sure eventually all the ex pats, travelers, students, or whatever they are, will be paying top gringo pricing because of where you’re from and what you’re capable of paying. Be humble about your living experiences. Just words for thought...
you might be a canadian used to high big city price but your appartment is very expensive I feel like .. as a european I really think you been overcharged
DheerSonia Great info!! 👍🏽.... can you share the vegan chef contact info that you referenced in the video? You can’t beat $50 dollars a week for lunch/dinner. Also, who did you go through for renting the apartment in Medellin? Gracias!!
@@DheerSonia the apartment seemed high, either that or i just lucked out on my last stay paid 290 for a very nice 3 bedroom with large kitchen that i loved. i have already made plans to return since the restrictions have lifted. happy travels
Remember it's Canadian dollars so at that time it was about $920 USD. Also this is a short term furnished rental so normally the price is higher, especially if you book with an agency. It was cheaper than most similar places I was seeing on Airbnb and other agencies so I thought I got a good deal but I also booked very last minute and during high season! :)
@@DheerSonia Yes I was referring to CAD as well (I’m also Canadian aha) and the place I’m currently renting in Bogotá is also finished but I definitely understand, I usually only book through Airbnb but if you want to find a decent place for a fair price you usually have to book a few months out which is a headache for me because I’m very impulsive and currently travelling in short time frames to many destinations. Did you ever find a cheaper place or have you since left Medellín?
I’m going to Medellín next in about a week, the place I’ll be staying is just over $1,000 month and not quite as big as your place, I find rent in Medellin to be steep unless you plan far in advance
@@Dave-sd5cs Ahh yeah I feel you. I'm also very impulsive and doing the same thing as you! I'm not in Medellin anymore, I'm currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina :)
@@DheerSonia How’s expenses there? Specifically groceries. I’m now in Manta, Ecuador, I find groceries to be overly high, about double the price for most items compared to Medellin and a surprising amount more expensive than the average in Ontario.
@@arisejeff Yes, exactly, it was just for a one month stay! Affordable longer term options are definitely easier to find! Also, I'm not sure where you're from but it was $1300 Canadian dollars. If you're from the USA, it was approx $980 USD at the time. Thank you so much for the kind words!! :)
super cheap :-) but not for the columbiens. For who is this message. To bring or motivate Canadiens and Americans to go to Columbia to raise the prices? Please dont talk too much abaut the price, talk more abaout the country.
I agree with you Danny, Colombian food is great! I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to by garbage but I'm going to guess it's the pizza? I ordered pizza maybe twice throughout my 5 weeks in Colombia which I personally don't think is a crime haha. I'm all for indulging in new cuisines and agree that everyone should try Colombian food though!

@@DheerSonia Was this agency Liv Realty Medellin, by chance? Also, do you recall the quality of the internet? (I believe I am currently looking at renting the same place but am concerned about the internet since my job requires video conferencing.)

@@graham6132 Yes it was Liv Realty Medellin! The quality was very good. My job is also very high "internet heavy" and I was pleasantly surprised that the wifi was able to keep up.
Thanks for plugging the spanish lesson private prices

Great vid, thanks Sonia! Is the wifi in your apartment consistently strong and reliable?
Thanks Sameer! :) Yes the wifi was amazing! I was really worried about that before arriving and was pleasantly surprised at how fast and reliable it was.
Can you share the agency you booked through? Vegan chefs have social media?
For sure! It was Liv Realty Medellin. Highly recommend them.
The vegan chefs are on Instagram. Their username is vital.livity
DheerSonia thank you
Damn Spanish lessons for $6/hr. I'm a Spanish speaker but I'd probably get some of those to try em out. Along with the personal trailer. Haha. I'm glad you did your research before you went!
I miss both those things so much!!! Especially the personal trainer because the quarantine 15 is too real haha
Love your video !

Beautiful apartment...I am thinking about maybe living in Colombia next year.
You should definitely do it! It's a great place :)
Yes I will be cooking two peanut butter and Marmalade sandwiches followed by bakery cake, I don't like to bake.
Awesome!
Hi would you mind posting links to everything you discussed in the video please? I am super eager to move to Columbia in the next 2 years and your experience is making it a lot easier for me to drop everything and go!
Beautiful apt. I love your video. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind words Ben!! :)
Very informative video. You have a very nice apartment.
Thank you so much!! :)
4,399,050.55 pesos ($1,002 USD)
I'd rather live in Estrato 3, pay $300 a month, and save all that money for other activities or just savings, but to each their own.
Modern style apartments make people feel all good inside, so they're not that bad if you're insecure, need to impress others, or have money to🔥burn.
Metro cable is free if you don’t check out your ticket
I think you were overcharged. I heard one bedrooms are $450 to $600. Check out How to Expats
You will never get a furnished apt with that view in el Poblado wich is the most exclusive area to live in Medellin for $450-$600 month to month literally impossible, she def got a great deal for just under $1000US
@@DheerSonia ruclips.net/video/KcuXf9g3QEQ/видео.html
@@wbuffett1 In that video he says that a fully furnished 1 bedroom apartment in El Poblado ranges from $800-$1100 USD. My apartment was $990 USD approximately, so it was within the range that he indicated. He also mentioned that prices can go up 30-40% in the high season months like January which is when I was there.
She probably went there in high demand season.
Do you speak spanish?
Trying to gauge the difficulty of living in a Latin country without knowing spanish.
I have an intermediate level of Spanish. It’s definitely a good idea to know Spanish before you come because it will make your entire experience a lot more fruitful since you’ll be able to better connect with the locals :)
Awesome apartment! Witch neighborhood was it in?
Thank you! It was Poblado :)
Great show keep up great work

What is the agency you used to find your place?
Also can you share the links to all of the things you used please
Apartment: Liv Realty Medellin
Cleaning service: same company as apartment
Salsa classes: Dancefree
Spanish lessons & personal chef: no longer in service :’(
@@DheerSonia Thank you for sharing!
@@DheerSonia do you mind letting me know which agency you used? I love Medellin and hope to return soon. Nice video.

That's crazy, I'm from Toronto also been thinking about moving there myself
That's awesome! I'm sure you'll love it :)
Great informative vid, and WOW you are absolutely beautiful with a personality to match :>)

It's nov. 2021. Are you still in columbia?
I was there a few weeks ago but am not there at the moment :(
It is a tiny apartment. The sink is very small. The staircase is risky. Although, it could be good for a single healthy person but people with knee arthritis will have hard time climbing up the stairs.

Hi! It’s called Medellin Expat and Tourist Info :)
Thanks❤️
Are you saying that you own this apt for $13,000 in Canadian currency or you are renting? That is $10,041.14 in america.
I rented it for 1 month at $1,300CAD/month. In USD it was about $960 at the time. I wish I could buy it for $13,000 hahaha
How did you even move to Colombia? And do you work there??
I was only there for a month (hoping to move there after the pandemic is more under control globally). I work remotely so, no, I wasn’t working for a company there. Hope that helps! :)
It’s a amazing ❤️
Thank you so much!! :)
I'm in a big city in Canada and can rent the same sized place for that amount.
That's awesome! Us Toronto and Vancouver residents are jealous haha
Can a person work from home?
I did! The wifi was reliable and there was a desk so I had everything I needed to work from home.
@@DheerSonia Thanks
If the classes are group classes, they are very expensive.
They were private classes :)
Can I move in with you?
Only if you supply an air fryer
With regards to the pricing, perhaps it’s not a good idea to disclose the purchasing power between cities from where you come from with those that you do business with. Because I’m sure eventually all the ex pats, travelers, students, or whatever they are, will be paying top gringo pricing because of where you’re from and what you’re capable of paying. Be humble about your living experiences. Just words for thought...
Thank you for the feedback!

@@DheerSonia the apartment seemed high, either that or i just lucked out on my last stay paid 290 for a very nice 3 bedroom with large kitchen that i loved. i have already made plans to return since the restrictions have lifted. happy travels
$1,300 jesus that’s pricey, I have a place similar in Bogotá for $840 and Bogotá is supposed to be more expensive
