This guy was just special. Those old ribbon mics really let you hear all of JD’s voice. Especially in his earlier years. The Good Lord blessed him with a very incredible, unique one of a kind voice.
Not for him, he's not. He's singing with incredibly warm, mellow, and solid tones; these notes frequently sound just beautiful. And from the sound of it, he's giving those old speakers all they could handle. But in later concerts and albums he would frequently sing notes nearly a full octave lower than the B-flats he's singing here, and he occasionally dropped down to hit notes beyond the reach of an 88-key piano.
I didn't recognize some of the members on this video so I looked them up. This was evidently recorded in 1965 and the members were: JD Sumner bass (1965-1980, 1988-1998) Jimmy Blackwood baritone (1965-1969) Roger McDuff lead (1964-1965) Jim Hill tenor (1965-1968) Chuck Ramsey piano (1965)
this is the music and voice that has kept me happy and close to god for many years. thank god for jd sumner.i hope he knows how many he helped find jesus
Title = "Farther Along" ~ Terrific song from a legendary group. I was honored to meet many Gospel music greats in the past while promoting/scheduling concerts. Most of the 'old-timers' are gone now but their music & love for Jesus lives on. Rest In Peace.
one of mom & dads favorite groups of the time. the song says it all. my parents are "farther along" & they do understand it ! they are now in the presence of the lord & his father & you can't get better than that ! just written before memorial day 2013. DAD: 1924-2010 MOM:1929-2012 in their PRECIOUS memory. their son. GREAT SOUTHERN KY. PARENTS. they loved & served the lord for most of their lives.
i believe when Acts 2.17, Joel 2.28-31 come fully to pass,(i think it has already started but i think the outpouring of The Holy Spirit on America's young people will be so strong it is unthinkable), they will find this Heavenly and Holy Music that brings praise to Our Lord more than any ever. some "power" has kept this kind of Gospel Music hidden in the back of the attic or away from our ears. i am 34 and was Blessed to see JD Sumner and the Stamps apprx.1989. You can feel the Touch of His Hand
What a wonderful testimony of your precious parents, I share your sentiments for my parents too. Surely yours and mine are rejoicing together and encouraging us to be faithful and meet them there soon. Thanks for viewing and your comments.
Both. JD Sumner himself was just under 6'6" in his prime, and maintained a strong 6'5" throughout his career, while James Blackwood was probably 5'7" at the very most, and the baritone singer seems to be around the same height. James said once in an interview that his own mother only came up to his shoulder, so she would've been around 4'6" lol.
Para que realmente se dijera que era un gran bajo debió haber cantado sin micrófono, tal como lo hacía el gran Mikhail Slatopolzky. Ese cantante del video al menos para mi no fue un bajo profundo.
@@andrekilpatrick7704 I have to agree. It's cool to hear how low he can go but never cared for his ability to carry a tune. Check out Rex Nelon. He sounds great. Very smooth bass.
@@rebeccabaer1701 Thank you just checked him out...that is how the bass lead is supposed to sound..he sounds like the Notorious Black lead basses Jimmy Jones and George McCurn
JD Sumner's ONLY asset was that he was a deep bass...he clearly not could not sing lead very well and it seems as though he knew it..his voice was flat, monotonous and he could not hold a note!!!!
I guess every singer just can't be as blessed all their life long . I remember hearing George Jones in his prime . Good , ok , but then I heard him when he was over 80+...Still good . Not many can say that when they get old . So we just remember them in their Hey-Day , when they were in peak condition ... All considered , John Sumner did very well his whole life , contributing to the Master's call...us... The Glory Of The Lord Shall Prevail...
This is the music Elvis loved!
The old microphones specialized in treble and maybe alto but his low bass just makes that microphone work and bleeds through, Wow 😮

King of bass singers. Amazing.
I think JD was at his best in the 50's and 60's, what a great group.
Amen
He was amazing in 70´s(Elvis) and 80´s(Masters V) too.
He was amazing at every moment of his career

He was incredible wasn’t he? I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a voice like that. It’s really like there’s no limits.
No one will ever to J.D. Sumner. There's pretenders but his voice was one of a kind. May he REST IN PEACE.
Love these guys , I grew up listening to there music

The Gospel world lost a great man when JD left us for the great world beyond.
I'm an atheist am I miss him greatly.
He found peace in the valley.
All of them !
JD Sumner on bass, incredible!
Wow what a bass!! This guy is definitely the deepest voice ever to exist! That guy Tim Storms cannot hold a candle to this guy!
Também não é bem assim... O Tim é muito bom...está dentro dos clássicos...
J. D. SUMNER'S VOICE WAS SO EXCEPTIONAL AND, IT WAS VERY UNIQUE!

Great singing by the quartet and JD is FANTASTIC!
Incredible bass, JD Sumner. Looking forward to meeting you in heaven🙏🏼❤️
You will never hear music like this nowadays. It's fabulous!
JD is the best!
SIMPLY FANTASTIC!!!!
JD thank God for the gift of your voice in heaven as was on earth the joy you brought to us, Amen
I need better quality speakers.... to enjoy J.D.'s range !!
Experienced this group in our church in Missoula, Montana in August of 1965.
Yes, he did. I was right there next to the piano and watched him sing down the scale and then go lower a couple of notes, to the GGGG.
Such depth way back then!!! Bravo there JD!!!!
God Bless America.
que voz incrível!
Mensagem sublime " Farther Along" cantada pelo Quarteto Americano, com o J.D.SUUMER no baixo vocal.
Essa gravação é.muito antiga.linda .
These videos are great. My parents always tell me about them watching the gospel groups. I love watching them.
What memories!!
great performance of a great song
We need a good old fashioned Revival, Amen
Timeless blessings!!!
We'll all understand ......Praise God !!

Beautiful
2018 Nothing has changed.
waooo q clase de bajo,increible.
The song is "Farther Along".
JD is singing EXTREMELY low!!!
Bass singers from a quartet commonly support the ensemble by declining a solo.
Bb1 aos montes kk
esse baixo parece um trovao!!!
Great combination
2019
What a testimony.
Is JD tall or are the rest short?
+Mathieu Schuler 6 feet 5 inches tall.
+Mathieu Schuler I think he was 6-5

+Raymond Lisle thanks man!
JD is standing on the piano bench.
Much thanks!!!
Tempting to say that JD was the goat bass singer. Except that JD, himself, said that the immortal Jim "Big Chief" Weatherington was the true goat.
WOW!
cantata da Elvis con JD meravigliosa
Os outros três componentes ficam até com medo de cantar perto desse baixo!
+Jonatas Santos hahaha ronca igual trovoada!!!
um deles é o Elvis
So true!!
JD always flexes on those bottom notes lol
Great!
There’s never been another line The Velvet Tornado Siren
So true.
JD was old looking even when he was young! He did not age a day.
Very good
what is the name of this song?
your right.

How was he in this video ?
I don't understand your question.
JD Sumner Sang The Last Verse Of The Song REALY LOW. I'd Enjoy The Video

Baixo profundo/baixo
JD does a good job with an awful arrangement of this song and even poorer engineering of the sound stage/equipment.
+saunieh ..JD sounds terrible as well lol...especially when he leads!!!
