My wife and I had tickets to a Stamps concert about three weeks after JD died. Didn't know until we got there that he had passed. JD's director's chair was in his position on the stage, with his mic propped up in one corner, a single red rose in the other. The group went ahead with the concert with no bass part, other members taking JD's solos. Not a word was said about JD, they just did the concert as planned without him. It was a fitting tribute, demonstrating just how fundamental JD's voice was to the quartet's sound. Have to admit though, I heard harmony parts I had never heard before on several songs!

I got a chance to go see them in the 1990’s. I was working undercover and looked pretty rough when I was driving by and saw they were playing in a small venue. I got in and was captivated by JD’s voice. I was able to talk to them after the concert and they were so kind to me. I know they were probably wondering about me when they saw me😂. Man I miss them.

Miss my buddy Ed Hill, and ol Rick Strickland is still getting it done on the solo circuit!

Rick Strickland is an acquired taste-or not! The personnel changes for this Quartet are probably more numerous than any other Quartet in Gospel Music history. But, my favorite line-up was JD and Ed Hill, with Jack Toney on lead, and Jerry Trammel singing tenor. That didn’t last very long, but Trammel and Toney and Ed had a fantastic blend!

@@elvis1988ful I met JD several times when he was with the Masters V, but as a kid, we would go through see the Big Four Quartets as they often came to our area on the same bill: The Statesmen, The Blackwood Bros, JD & The Stamps, and Jake Hess & The Imperials.
