  • Dan Erlewine glues a Martin back brace, using tools you can make in your own shop. After this video, we developed the Brace Gluing Wedge to simplify this job and reduce the number of tools needed.

    Thank you for these videos. Your book The Guitar Player Repair Guide has gotten me a long way, and mixed with the videos, and your site I have nearly everything I need in the way of information to get what I need done. The world needs more repairmen and luthiers like you.

    I spilled beer in my Martin one night and it caused the glue to let go on one of the braces. Nice video. This is how I’ll fix it.

    He must have kids. Cuz my Martin suffered from one broken brace but after my 2 year old jumped on it like it was a trampoline I considered it to have held up very well.

    Regarding "not being able to see in the hole because my arm is in the way", why not connect the camera (that you are recording this with) up to a monitor.

    Dan you are the master - and you're the only reason I keep buying stuff from StewMac - kind of like always buying some soda or something when you stop at a gas station to use the head... I feel like your knowledge is worth the extra mark-up. I DO wish they'd stop sourcing stuff to China and other points Asian though, and have all USA mnfcts. produce the tools. Any chance of that?

    If you can get some medical supplies, a fine gauge needle attached to tubing and a syringe can get the glue in easier. Then you can use strong rare earth magnets to clamp the brace without using clamps.

    • @Iazzaboyce
      @Iazzaboyce 5 лет назад

      A small plastic bead glued on the needle will act as a stop keeping glue to the centre of the brace.

    These are awesome videos...extremely educational. I wonder though--if you couldn't just use a USB webcam as a remote set of eyes while doing that work? Have a laptop nearby and then put something like a Logitech C920 Pro HD webcam into the body, and just watch the monitor while you're working. Maybe that's what he did here, but simply didn't mention it?

    • @34672rr
      @34672rr 5 лет назад

      @jameshisself but it wasn't for the work, the camera is a good idea though to see what you are doing

    • @34672rr
      @34672rr 5 лет назад

      @jameshisself he surely would have mentioned it and he was gluing blind. Sorry to call you shirley.

    • @34672rr
      @34672rr 5 лет назад

      @jameshisself the guy is a stalwart for detail, and tells every little thing he does. doubt he wouldn't mention something as blatant like that, and at least present not it like he was doing it blind, as he does in other videos. anyway I think he is so good at it, the camera would just get in his way, other than for video like this. and he has said in other videos that the cameras do get in his way and has to do things differently to get around them.

    • @34672rr
      @34672rr 5 лет назад

      @jameshisself obviously you do, otherwise you would have left it at that, but you feel the need to turn observation into argument

    • @mattshaheen5333
      @mattshaheen5333 Год назад

      I don't know why it would. It doesn't exert any pressure on the braces or the back of the guitar. Are you thinking the vibration would loosen the braces?

    I use a small glue bottle, jacks made from turnbuckles and wedges out of old credit cards. I just use the tip of my finger to work the glue in under the brace. Guitar repair ain't rocket science folks.
