Well if college athletes want to get paid, then let them foot their own college expenses. Many of these athletes don't graduate, but still take the spot of someone who meets both the grade requirements and the desire to have that degree. College should be about getting a higher education, playing sports as a way to do it for free or at a reduced fee. Many of these athletes will never make it to the pros. They don't look at college as a way to be able to have a career, but instead as a step to the pros. If you accept a four year scholarship to a college/university and then change schools through the portal you should be required to repay the college/university for the money they invested in your education, because some of these full ride scholarships are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the school. These athletes aren't playing for free their scholarships are their payments. If that isn't good enough don't accept the scholarship and pay your own way. Wonder how many of them would be able to afford the education they are getting? The sport these athletes compete in is their primary school - I can only speak on football. We majored in football, football is the priority. You don’t get to take certain classes or pursue certain degrees if it conflicts with your football schedule. Meetings, Training, Academic Meetings, Film, Practice, Pre/Post Treatment … what regular student has to deal with that demand on a regular basis? You’re kidding yourself if you think it’s easy, and that the kids aren’t overworked. Scholarship athletes are restricted to certain paths. You’ll see walk-ons often taking advantage of the system and making the most out of it, but scholarship athletes don’t have that freedom. Why? Because if you don’t comply with the man in charge, you lose your scholarship.
Not to mention how much of a F you this is to everyday students paying exorbitant amounts just to get an education. I say this as a former D1 basketball player. I also don't wanna hear about how athletics bring in the big bucks. This is only true for a handful of schools. We should put more emphasis on education

These are institutions of higher learning not 4 year boarding schools for semi pro athletes
Also, considering for sports like college football only 1.6% will go to the nfl, yet most of these kids will be getting a full ride plus a salary is insane. Meanwhile the kids who are gonna cure cancer are going in debt that will cripple them for years.

If the university is smart they’ll stay as far away from paying players as they can to avoid title 9. Use 3rd parties to manage this so you don’t have to pay players that make no money for the university. Equally spreading money that you didn’t earn is the problem.

I still don’t see how this has to do with NIL collectives at all, or the portal. If anything this could make players/families/agents even more greedy and they’ll sit out. These are kids going to school, what is next? High School Sports? What happen to education is it turning to greed? If a college kid does well and is picked up by pro scouts then his payday was accomplished, they have to earn that and giving these kids at a young age so much money well you see what it even does to pro players who are always in trouble.
I truly do not understand the sentiment from people like you. These kids witness MULTI-BILLION! $ deals being made off of them and somehow they are deemed greedy because they want a crumb of the pie. You wake up every morning to be yelled at by your coaches that are raking millions of dollars annually + car paid + house paid by the university. But, God forbid the athletes get a taste of financial freedom too. They make so much money that they create new and unnecessary job positions (ex, assistant director of player quality control personnel) to clean the books… but yea - the athletes are the problem.
