    Thanks for the test! One thing I would be interested to see is how an "ice extender" compares to simply adding more ice. So in addition to the control cooler with 10lb of ice, there's another cooler with say 12lb of ice. And see how that compares to a cooler with 10lb of ice + 2lb ice extender.

    The color of the cooler will determine how much heat it absorbs or reflects from sunlight. Also some appear to be in shade while others are in the sun. Since the experiment is for ice packs, all coolers should be equal.

    What are the measurements + displacement of each ice pack? Aside from that playing a role in the outcome (a larger displacement ice pack will probably stay cooler longer), it also has a practical implication on what you can store (a larger displacement ice pack means less food in the cooler).

    Another great review. I wonder how much of an advantage the Engel ice packs had, freeze point is 20°, whereas the chillin' brew and yeti freezes at 28°. Be interesting to see what the tundra series from Arctic ice would do. Freezing point is 5° on them.

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  7 лет назад +1

      Really good point Jeremy. The Cooler Shock is an even lower freeze point. We also tested Techni Ice, which is 0 degree freeze point, and we tested that in a separate video (coming soon). However, it prolonged the ice about 12 hours. So this is a tough call. I think this is definitely more applicable when no ice is present. We just wrapped that test up today and all ice packs were exhausted in 12-16 hours.

    • @jeremymann3476
      @jeremymann3476 7 лет назад

      I gotcha, I've found these tundra packs don't last much over 12 hours before melting. But are still colder than ice. I know they are more intended for use with frozen stuff. But still work great when you top off the cooler of beer with them.

    • @mhard126
      @mhard126 7 лет назад +1

      The lower freezing point ice packs themselves should 'melt' faster than higher freezing point due to a higher temperature differential to the surrounding (faster energy transfer). But, by lowering the temperature of the ice farther below it's melting point, the ice should last longer, but may freeze your beverages. Arctic is actually very up front about this in their marketing. Basically you have to choose the ice pack for your application. Chillin brew or similar is great for drinks, but if you want to keep things frozen, they won't be a huge help. Did the Engel packs freeze the cokes by chance?.

    Not surprising that the Engel 20's won as they have the lowest base temp conversion.
    I'm looking to purchase 2 large packs for my fish bag but not sure I can get the Engel 20's to proper freeze as I don't run my freezer that cold.

    The reason the darker coolers were colder on the outside in the white cooler is because the dark surfaces absorbed more of the coldness. For instance objects that are black not only absorb heat quicker but also radiate heat quicker - in essence they act like less insulation.
    So the blue yeti cooler is not actually keeping things cold or because the outside is colder, it's actually conducting temperature more as opposed to insulating.
    You should probably redo the test with the white cooler for the yeti ice.
    Also, one thing to note, the design of the YETI ICE has a hole in it to allow for faster freezing, that same hole unfortunately means it will thaw faster because there is more surface area in contact with its surroundings.

    On a two week trip, I'll have access to fresh ice, but not every day. Of course putting ice packs or frozen salt water bottles in the cooler would help initially keep the ice longer and I wouldn't have to use as much ice, but would they still help keep the temp lower, more stable, or keep the ice from melting as fast even after the ice packs have thawed?

    Your testing method was very flawed. Of course the cooler without the additional ice pack would melt quickest. It has less thermal mass.
    Although you kept with the same manufacturer of cooler, but of course a white cooler in the sun will do better than any other colored cooler. If you use different colored coolers, you must keep them out of the sun to get a good comparison.
    You also have ice cube bags which may be of different weight or temperature.
    The proper way to run this test is to have all coolers the same brand and color, make sure they all have the same exposure to the sun, preferably none, and ONLY put ice packs in the cooler. This way you remove remove as many variables as possible.

    cooler color is a variable to consider. darker coolers get hotter

      Jesse, this is true on the surface, however internally we haven't observed a noticeable difference. Check this video out: ruclips.net/video/wbFSwQYn-mY/видео.html We tested two Grizzly 40 Qts (white and tan) significantly different external temps but did not impact ice retention times. We experienced the same with Yeti Tundra 45 (white and Tan) as well.

      @@CoolersOnSale the reason you see different external temperatures is likely due to different emissivity of the different colors, which affects the readings of the IR thermometer. Try this; set and empty black and a white cooler in the same room and let them get to the same temperature then measure them with the IR.. I don't like the IR types, you should use thermocouples for accurate temperature readings. We use them for lab work, not that expensive. You can then also feed the data to a reader and get it all plotted out over time!

    interesting.. The number 1 pack was in the lightest color cooler..... Second place was in the second lightest color cooler..... Just saying....

    • @ddff5242
      @ddff5242 6 лет назад

      also, 20 bucks for 1 engel..... 20 bucks for 4 cooler shocks of the same size.... plus cooler shock phase change is 2 degrees colder than engel....

      But then we tested again and switched them all around and experienced similar results

    Engel is the best, but it cost about $24.00 for 1? Cooler shock, you get 3 for $24.00. Not sure of size and volume difference though? Kinda guessing the Cooler shock is less thick than the Engel? Ni idea and don't own any of these yet.

    The best ice pack for your cooler? Frozen bottles of distilled water.

    The two LIGHTEST colored cooler wins. Not a good test. Can’t use these results reliably. Need to switch coolers of the two best with the two worse ( except the ice only).
    This is considered clinical trial for Engle and Arctic ice. Not a fair blind test.

    I thought the point of people wanting to use ice packs is to avoid the mess with ice... kind of a pointless test. Do the teat with strictly the ice packs and see how long they last!!

    Ummm the darker cooler gets warmer. Because it’s darker.

      @CoolersOnSale  5 лет назад +1

      We've tested this a couple times and actually testing it right now with 2 Kong and 2 Siberian coolers White Vs Dark. The effect on ice retention in cooler color is minimal.

    Yeah.... cant trust this result. What are the odds that the company that sponsored this test won?? 🤷‍♂️ needs to be same cooler colors & same size cooler packs. This is so misleading. Need to tell people this was sponsored.

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  6 лет назад +2

      This video was not sponsored, nor is any of our content. We provide unbiased tests. A vast majority of our commenters will attest to this. We've tested cooler color as a factor in ice retention and it has been minimal. Read about it here: www.coolersonsale.com/10-days-ice-retention-is-it-really-possible/

      We had to keep the cooler brand/size constant for the test to be fair.
