these drums have rolled and welded bearing edges just like 1920s ludwig two piece black beauties. so rare to find new drums with welded bearing edges, this definitely gives warm and full-bodied sound
Hi Jon. I’m thinking of buying an Athenian 1mm brass Warlord snare. From what you can remember, was this a loud drum or was it actually a more warmer sounding drum? I’m looking for a drum that’s versatile and musical. Would you say that the Athenian fits the bill? Also, would you remember where you obtained the indigo dye for varnishing it?
Hi Charles, Yes I think it fits the bill. They are expensive, the Spartan might be a better choice money wise unless you are getting a deal. I might be selling my Spartan if you are interested.
Lugs are garbage though. Broke 2 rim shot area lugs on the one I had. They are hollow cast. I was fortunate to find a replacement lug that I got shipped to the UK from Japan but the second one that broke I couldn't find a replacement and had to stick a starclassic lug on it. Sold it in the end. Only as strong as its weakest link.

I got the dye online. Do a search, it was sprayed on the shell for me.
