If my time with this historically accurate combat game has taught me anything about medieval swordfighting, its that there was literally zero defence against spinning two large axes around wildly.
He's not actually holding that peasant axe upside down, I'm pretty sure it's actually a billhook axe. They're used for clearing shrubbery and the hook side has a sharp edge.
